Men’s Tennis Wraps Up Play on Day One of Bedford Cup.
September 28, 2018
LAKE NONA, Fla. – On the courts of the USTA National Campus, the Florida State men’s tennis team took on 10 of the 11 division one tennis team in the State of Florida in the Bedford Cup.
“There was a lot of tough play and battle out of our guys today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “There were some tough conditions today and our guys played well. I was proud to see how our guys came out and played in the afternoon after some tough early results.”
The day began with doubles play as the Seminoles had two teams in action. Sophomore Sebastian Arcila and freshman Richard Thongoana took on third seed Trey Hilderbrand and Alan Rubio of UCF. The two teams battled back and forth, but Arcila and Thongoana could not pull it out as they lost 8-7(5).
The Garnet and Gold could not pull out their second doubles match of the day as junior Enzo Le Seguillon and freshman Bryn Nahrung lost 8-6 to Vasyl Kiselyov and Saitejas Mopuri (UCF).
Arcila finally got the Seminoles on the board as he dominated his first singles match of the fall. He took down Sean Burnette of South Florida in straight sets (6-2, 6-2). Nahrung earned the second singles win of the day for the Noles with a 7-5, 7-6(1) win in singles flight three.
Le Seguillon lost in the first round of singles flight one 7-6(5), 7-5 but will continue play in the Consolation bracket. Thongoana did not make it out of the first round either as he lost in three sets. He won the first set 7-5 before losing the final two sets 6-1, 6-3.
In the second round of singles matches Thongoana and Le Seguillon both advanced. Thongoana won in straight sets over Alvaro Herandez Horta of FAU 7-6, 6-3. He will resume singles play tomorrow in the semifinals of flight one consolation bracket A. Le Seguillon advanced to the semifinals of the flight one consolation bracket B through a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket.
Arcila was not as fortunate in his second match. He fell short to sixth-seeded Alan Rubio of UCF 6-2, 7-6. Nahrung lost as well falling to Luis Fernandez Labarta of FAU 7-6, 6-4.
“I look forward to continuing to play in this tournament for the rest of the weekend and see how our guys perform,” said Hultquist.

LAKE NONA, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team continued play on the courts of the USTA National Campus for day two of the Bedford Cup with an impressive performance, going 3-0 in doubles and 3-1 in singles.
“We had a good day today in Orlando going 6-1,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We competed well and had a couple guys come from behind for good wins. I was pleased with our effort today and persevering through some really hot weather.”
Sophomore Sebastian Arcila and freshman Richard Thongoana got the day started for FSU with their first doubles win of the fall. The duo took down the USF pair of Sean Burnette and Ivan Yatsuk 7-5. They took the momentum from that win into their next match as they advanced to the flight one consolation finals after a 6-4 win over FAU. Junior Enzo Le Seguillon and freshman Bryn Nahrung added another doubles win with a 7-5 win over Castro and Navarro of Bethune-Cookman.
“The doubles teams played really well coming from behind today,” said Hultquist. “I was pleased with them today.”

“Rana had a really good day,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “His second match was against a top player and I liked how he came back after losing the first set. He came back and dominated the second and into the third with the tiebreaker. I thought it was a good come from behind win for Rana. The doubles play was good quality doubles by both teams. I was pleased with how we started the tiebreaker, going up 5-0 and closing it out 7-4.”
Bhullar began his day with a dominating win early in the morning. He took the first set from Blake Croyder of Georgia 6-1 and kept the pressure on his opponent. Bhullar took the second set 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Bhullar fell behind early losing the first set 7-5. He quickly flipped the script of the match and took the second set in dominating fashion, 6-1. In the next set, Bhullar took the super breaker 10-4 to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket.
“I did a good job coming back from a bad first round in the main draw,” said Bhullar. “I was not playing my best and had to figure out my game style and raise my game. I played good all around in my last match today. My opponent was playing very physical, but I was the stronger guy today.”
In doubles play, Knaff and Arcila kept up the good work and advanced to the semifinals of the main draw. They took a 6-3 lead before the Florida duo of Andy Andrade and Luka Greif tied it up at seven. In the tiebreaker, the Seminoles took an early 5-0 lead before taking it 7-4.
“We played really solid in general today,” said Knaff. “We were up 6-3 and were playing really good. There were a couple of tight games where we lost a few deuce points, which
was tough. In general, we played really well together, being that it was our first tournament. It is really cool to make the semifinals and get another match tomorrow against a good team. I am hoping
that we will win that one and advance to the finals and win the tournament.”

Men’s Tennis Starts Season with Two Home wins.
Florida State took down Georgia Southern 4-0 and Mercer 7-0.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 20th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (2-0, 0-0 ACC) started their season out strong going 2-0 with shutout wins over Georgia Southern and Mercer. They will be back at it in two days at the Florida State Spring Invitational.
“Today was a good start,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “I thought we played a lot stronger doubles in the second match. One thing that is hard is that we have been practicing for a week now but have had no real match play. We had some leads and they would come back and we would have to finish it off. I was pleased that we won all 11 points that we played today. It was a good start to the season and I look forward to playing again in two days.”
The Noles swept Georgia Southern in dominating fashion. In doubles, the Garnet and Gold took matches on courts one and three. Court three finished first as the freshman pair of Bryn Nahrung and Richard Thongoana made quick work of their opponent. They were tied 2-2 before taking the next four games and the match 6-2. Junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila capped off doubles play winning 7-5 on court one.
In singles, junior Enzo Le Seguillon dominated in his first ever collegiate dual match. He jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set before winning 6-4. In the second set, he did not give up a game, winning 6-0. Thongoana gave the Noles a 3-0 lead taking the first set 6-4 and the second 6-2. Arcila earned the first match clincher of the season taking down his opponent on court six 6-4, 6-4.
Against Mercer, things did not look much different as the Noles captured all seven points. Nahrung and Thongoana once again captured the first doubles, this time 6-0. Knaff and Arcila followed up with a sweep of their own on court one.
Sophomore Chase Wood got the doubles scoring started, earning his first win of the season 6-0, 6-1 on court five. Nahrung gave the Garnet and Gold a 3-0 lead after earning his first collegiate dual match victory on court five. Le Seguillon clinched the match with his second win of the day 6-3, 6-1 on court four.
With the match already clinched the final three Seminoles went on to win their matches as well. Thongoana earned a 6-3, 6-3 win on court four as Knaff and fellow junior Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar battled on the final two courts. Knaff won in three sets, taking the third set super-breaker 10-3 while Bhullar battled in a second set tiebreaker that saw him come away victorious 16-14.

Men’s Tennis Takes Home Florida State Spring Invitational Championship.
Florida State took down FAU 4-0 in the finals.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 20th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (5-0, 0-0 ACC) earned their fifth victory in four days as they defeated FAU in the championship match of the Florida State Spring Invitational.
“It has been a long four days, but a good start for us,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “I felt that we got a good performance from everyone today. Bryn and Enzo had a nice come from behind doubles win. Aziz and Lucas also had a nice come from behind doubles win as well. It was good to get the doubles point and the lead. We had a lot of competitive sets but we won them all and got a great start with Aziz and Lucas winning quick.”
“FAU has a really nice team and will probably end up in the rankings. I see them having a good opportunity to win their conference and be a team to make the NCAA Tournament.”
For the first time all season seniors Aziz Dougaz and Lucas Poullain stepped foot on the court for the Garnet and Gold. Less than 24 hours after winning a doubles futures titles Dougaz arrived in Tallahassee and won two more matches. He teamed up with Poullain in doubles to help clinch the doubles point over the Owls of FAU and then helped give the Noles a 3-0 lead after winning his singles match on court one.
“There was a huge effort on the part of Aziz,” said Hultquist. “To win a pro tournament this weekend and get back here in time to help us win two matches today is huge. His effort today was outstanding given the amount of tennis he played in a short amount of time.
After losing the first doubles match of the season Florida State was in a battle on courts one and three. After starting down 2-1, freshman Bryn Nahrung and junior Enzo Le Seguillon battled to tie things up at four on court three. The duo went on to win the final two games to tie the doubles point at one. Down 5-4 on court one, Dougaz and Poullain won the final three games to take the match on court one 7-5 and the doubles point.
The Noles quickly expanded their lead as Poullain picked up right where he left off a season ago and earned a dominating 6-2, 6-2 win on court two. Dougaz followed him up with a convincing victory of his own on court one 6-3, 6-1. Junior Alex Knaff wrapped things up with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court three.

No. 20 Men’s Tennis Remains Unconquered After Tough Test from South Alabama.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 20th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (6-0, 0-0 ACC) remains unconquered in 2019 after taking down South Alabama (0-1) 5-2.
“South Alabama is a very good team,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We did a good job of coming back from behind. I thought South Alabama outplayed us in the doubles. In singles, they jumped on us and got three first sets. The turning point of the match was the beginning of the second when Lucas and Alex fought back to win their second sets to give us two options. We won five second sets and went on to win both third sets. As the match went on we got stronger. For an early season match, it was a good win over a good team that will make the postseason. We just have to keep getting better.
After a mid-afternoon rain, the Seminoles and the Jaguars were forced to take their contest to the indoor courts. South Alabama, a team that made the second round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament, jumped out of the gates hot to take the doubles point from the Seminoles. This was the first time of the 2019 season that Florida State has lost the doubles point.
Florida State was slow to start singles as well, dropping three of six first sets. A switch was flipped in the second set as the Noles won five of six including second set wins from senior Lucas Poullain and junior Alex Knaff that forced a third and deciding set.
Senior Aziz Dougaz and juniors Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar and Enzo Le Seguillon did their job and made easy work of courts one, four and five. Le Seguillon was the first one to finish earning a 6-2, 6-2 win on court five to tie the team score up at one. Dougaz earned his second singles win of the season on court one taking down Sacha Modica 6-4, 6-4. Bhullar gave the Garnet and Gold a 3-1 lead after taking court four 6-3, 6-1. It was his fourth win of the season.
With the match on the line, Poullain and Knaff were both fighting in third sets. Alex led 4-2, while Lucas was tied at three. Poullain pulled away at the end of the set to take a 6-4 win and clinch the match, his first clincher of the season. Knaff earned his fifth dual match win on court three taking down his opponent 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to seal the Noles 5-2 victory.

LAKE NONA, Fla. – The 20th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (7-0, 0-0 ACC) comes from behind to take down Cal (0-1) 4-3 at the USTA National Campus to remain unbeaten at their home away from home.
“We always enjoy playing down here, it’s been a great venue for us. We actually call it Lake ‘Nolena.’ I think our guys get inspired to play here,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Cal played a great match and really took it to us early. It took a lot for us to come back. I think it showed that we are never out of a match. But we always like the environment here and it’s very professional with how it’s run.”
For the second straight match the Noles fell behind early after losing the doubles point, and for the second straight match, they came back to win the whole thing.
Cal’s 14th ranked doubles pair of Brumm and Kikuchi grabbed the first doubles win for the Golden Bears before they captured the doubles point with a 6-1 win on court three.
The Seminoles started singles out splitting first sets with Cal. Once again Florida State and Cal split second sets, forcing three third sets. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain was the first on the board for the Garnet and Gold as he took court two in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to tie the match at one.
Cal bounced back taking court three in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, but once against Florida State tied the match up at two with a three-set win on court four by junior Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar.
Florida State took the lead back with a big win by senior Aziz Dougaz over 98th ranked Paul Barretto on court one 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The Golden Bears tied it back up at three with a 5-7, 5-7 win over junior Enzo Le Seguillon on court five.
With the match on the line, it all came down to sophomore Chase Wood on court six. After taking the first set 7-5 he lost the second set 6-3. He took an early 2-1 lead in the deciding set before expanding it to 5-1. After losing the seventh game he took the set 6-2 to clinch the match for the Noles.

No. 19 Men’s Tennis Advances to Kick-Off Weekend Final with a 4-1 Win over Texas Tech.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 19th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (8-0, 0-0 ACC) advanced to the final of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend with a 4-1 win over Texas Tech (4-1). The Seminoles will take on Tulane tomorrow at 11 am with a shot at advancing to National Indoors on the line.
“I thought that was the best we have played doubles all year,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Texas Tech is a good doubles team. I thought we played really well all the way through. We did a really good job starting out in singles getting the six first sets. Texas Tech showed a lot of heart being down 3-0 and still coming back to win three second sets.”
The Noles started the match out by taking the doubles point for the first time in their last three matches. Senior Aziz Dougaz and junior Alex Knaff took down the 17th ranked doubles pair of Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn 6-2 to get the scoring started. The doubles point was clinched as sophomore Chase Wood and Freshman Richard Thongoana took court three 6-3.
Florida State jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after taking all six first sets and matches on courts two and five. Senior Lucas Poullain dominated one again taking court two 6-2, 6-2. Junior Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar followed that up with his first ranked win of the season taking down No. 70 Bjorn Thomson 6-2, 6-1 on court five. Bhullar currently leads the Seminoles with six dual match victories.
The match got close as the Red Raiders captured court three and forced third sets on courts one, four and six.
Leading 3-1, Thongoana stepped up and dominated the third set taking it 6-1 and clinching his first match as a Seminole.
“Richard was able to clinch it. He was definitely a highlight today running away with the third set and closing it out. It is a good win over a good team and we look forward to tomorrow against Tulane.”

No. 19 Men’s Tennis Falls To Tulane, 4-2.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 19th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (8-1) suffered their first loss of the season to Tulane (4-0) in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend championship match.
“There were four good teams here this weekend,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We had a good win yesterday. I did not think we played as good in singles today as yesterday, especially in the beginning. The crucial part of the match was the end of the first two sets. Tulane did a great job of capitalizing and winning on courts four and five.”
For the second match in a row and seventh time this season, the Noles won the doubles point. Florida State dominated courts one and three taking both of them 6-2 en route to an early 1-0 lead.
Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain gave the Garnet and Gold a quick 2-0 lead with another straight-set win, this time over No. 42 Luis Erlenbush. It was Poullain’s second-ranked win this season. He has now won 29 of his last 30 dual matches dating back to the 2018 season.
Tulane turned things around taking the next four courts. They started with court three, taking it 6-1, 6-4. The Green Wave tied it with another straight-set win on court four.
With the match coming down to the end Tulane took court five to take their first lead of the match. Senior Aziz Dougaz and sophomore Chase Wood headed to a third set and were tied 2-2. Wood took a 3-2 lead as Dougaz fell behind 3-2.
Dougaz then injured his ankle causing him not to be able to finish the match. Tulane went on to win 4-2 and advance to National Indoors.
“It is unfortunate for Aziz,” said Hultquist. “I think he was in position to win the third set and at the time Chase was up a break in the third. It is one of those things that happens and is unfortunate but we have a long year ahead of us and a lot of tennis to be played.”

Men’s Tennis Falls to Florida 4-1.
LAKE NONA, Fla. – The 22nd ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (8-2) lost to the No. 4 Florida Gators (3-1) 4-1 as a part of the Fresh from Florida Sunshine Showdown and College MatchDay event.
“Florida came out great,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “They came out fast in doubles and they really controlled the first set of the match. We were working our way back in the match, but it wasn’t enough.”
In front of 1,240 fans, Florida State took on Florida at the USTA National Campus for the third year in a row. The Noles got off to a slow start in doubles losing on court two 6-0. Court one was down 4-2 and court three was down 5-2. They fought back but could not catch up losing 6-3 on court three.
Singles play got started and was quickly interrupted by rain that caused the match to go indoors after over an hour delay. Before the delay, the Seminoles had lost five of six first sets and senior Lucas Poullain was down 5-4 in the first.
The rain delay recharged Florida State as Poullain came back to win the first set in a tiebreaker after being down 5-1. Junior Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar dominated the second set on court five 6-0, forcing a third set that he would go on to win.
Florida kept fighting as well taking courts three and four to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Florida captured a 2-0 lead after taking down freshman Richard Thongoana 6-2, 6-1 and then extended the lead to 3-0 after freshman Juan Martin Jalif lost his first match 6-4, 6-3.
With only four courts left the Seminoles were in contention. Bhullar forced a third set and freshman Chase Wood was leading 5-4 serving for the set to force a third. Poullain was tied 3-3 in the second set after winning the first and junior Alex Knaff led 5-2 in a second set to force a third set. Knaff’s second set was forced into a tiebreaker, which he led 5-3.
Bhullar went on to win his match and narrow the team score to 3-1. Wood’s match on court six got tied at five in the second set as Knaff lost 7-6(5) to end the match with the Gators winning 4-1.
“Lucas came back from down 5-1 in the first set and Rana came back after losing the first set to take his match in three. Alex put himself in a chance to win the second set up 5-2 and had three set points. I thought we really battled well as a team down 3-0 and didn’t give up. It was the first time Juni (Juan Martin Jalif) got to play and he fought hard in a tough position. It was hard for us to play without Aziz but I thought everyone did a great job today”

Men’s Tennis Takes Down Auburn 4-0.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 18/22nd ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (9-2) got back on track Friday night after losing their last two matches with a 4-0 win over Auburn (9-4). Without their top two players, the Noles earned their sixth shutout victory and eighth match at home heading into their off week.
“I think it is great to see the freshmen take advantage of their opportunity today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Today was a day of opportunity. Bryn stepped up when we threw him into the doubles lineup. He took advantage of that opportunity. To see Richard and Enzo clinch the match at basically the same time. They did a great job. You win as a team and every point counts as the same. Certainty we very much want Aziz and Lucas back but that took a very good team effort to get the win over a good Auburn team.”
For the eighth time this season, the Seminoles started off the match by winning the doubles point. Old partners Alex Knaff and Sebastian Arcila earned the first doubles win for the Noles with a big 6-4 win on court one. The Tigers tied the doubles point up as they earned a 6-3 win of their own on court three. In their first doubles match as a pair, the freshman duo of Bryn Nahrung and Juan Martin Jalif clinched the doubles point on court two. The win marked Jalif’s first collegiate victory and Nahrung’s sixth doubles win of the spring.
Knaff got the Noles on the board in singles with a quick win on court one. After losing his last four singles matches Alex dominated to get back into the grove. He won the first set 6-3 and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second set before winning the set 6-1.
Florida State capped off the match with almost simultaneous wins on courts four and six. Freshman Richard Thongoana grabbed a 6-4, 6-2 win on court four as junior Enzo Le Seguillon clinched his second match of the season.

Noles Sweep Clemson in ACC Home Opener.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 19th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (10-2, 1-0) earned their first ACC win of the season with a 4-0 shutout over Clemson (6-5, 0-1).
“We got a good team effort today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We are playing a lot of guys who have not played a lot of matches and to see them come through is encouraging.”
The Noles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after taking their ninth doubles point of the season. Junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila got the Noles on the board in doubles with a 6-4 win on court one. It was their second win in a row as a pair and third this spring.
Clemson rebounded by taking court two 6-3. Florida State quickly bounced back to take court three and the doubles point. Sophomore Chase Wood and freshman Richard Thongoana earned their third win of the spring as a pair with their 6-4 win on court three.
The Noles took it to the Tigers in singles, earning quick wins on courts one, four and five to clinch the match. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain did what he does, improving to 6-0 this spring for his 30th dual match win in 31 tries with a 6-1, 7-5 win on court one. Thongoana followed him up with an easy 6-1, 6-3 on court four. Wood finished off the Tigers with a quick win of his own 6-1, 6-2 on court five.
“Richard with Chase clinched the doubles and both had a very impressive performance in singles,” said Hultquist. “Chase had maybe one of his best matches, winning 6-1, 6-2 against an experienced player. He was very dominant, kept the ball deep and finished around the net. You get what you always get with Lucas. He is very consistent and I like how he kept taking balls out of the air today.”

The Noles started off the match losing their fourth doubles point of the season. Sophomore Chase Wood and freshman Richard Thongoana grabbed their fourth doubles win together this spring to start off doubles. Georgia Tech punched back with a 6-4 win on court one to tie things up. With the doubles point on the line the match on court two was in a tiebreaker. Georgia Tech took the point with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker.
Georgia Tech struck first in singles winning on court three. The Yellow Jacket’s Andrew Li defeated freshman Juan Martin Jalif 6-3, 6-1.
Wood struck first for the Noles on court six. He earned his third straight win and fourth of the spring with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Joseph Gandolpho. Junior Alex Knaff tied the match up at two with a straight set win of his own on court two. After taking the first set 6-3 he fell behind 4-1 in the second set. He stayed strong and fought back to tie the set up at five. With the match tied at six, Knaff took the tiebreaker to tie the match.
The Yellow Jackets struck back taking court five and a 3-2 lead. Thongoana was not phased as he evened things up at three. After losing the first set 6-3 he went on a tear taking the second set 6-4 and the third 6-2.
The match came down to court one as redshirt senior Lucas Poullain faced off against 36th ranked Carlos Divar. Poullain took the first set 7-5 before Divar bounced back to take the second 6-4. Lucas Poullain defeats reigning Big 12 Player of the Year.
NORMAN, Okla. – The 21st ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (10-4, 1-1) lost their second straight match on Sunday to No. 24 Oklahoma (10-3) 4-1 in Norman.
“It was a good competitive match today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We were in the position to win the final two courts and Alex had a shot there on court two. It was unfortunate to be over-ruled on match point.”
For the second match in a row, the Seminoles lost the doubles point. The Sooners grabbed the first doubles win on court two after Oklahoma’s Alex Bakshi and Ferran Calvo defeated the Seminole’s Juan Martin Jalif and Lucas Poullain 6-3. They then clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court one.
In singles, the Noles and Sooners split first sets. Oklahoma grabbed the first singles win on court five taking a 2-0 lead. The Noles fought back to narrow the lead to 2-1 after a 6-3, 6-3 win from redshirt senior Lucas Poullain on court one over reigning Big 12 Player of the Year Alex Bakshi.
“It was a great win by Lucas today,” said Hultquist. “Beating the reigning Big 12 player of the year is always a nice thing to do.” Oklahoma expanded their lead to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-4 lead on court six. With the match on the line, junior Alex Knaff was in a tiebreaker in his second set on court two. He and Oklahoma’s Jake Van Emburgh were back and forth until Van Emburgh pulled away to take the tiebreaker 10-8 and clinch the match.
“Overall, we showed good effort from all sports today but it was a disappointing loss,” said Hultquist. “We need to get healthy and back at it next week.”

Men’s Tennis Falls to Miami 4-0.
LAKE NONA, Fla. – The 37th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (10-5) fell to Miami (9-5) 4-0 Sunday night at the USTA National Campus.
“I liked how we came back tonight but we just dug ourselves in such a hole losing the doubles point and then losing five first sets,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We were in position to win a bunch of those first sets and just didn’t get it done. We played from behind all night. I appreciate how Alex and Chase fought back. We were digging down and it was just too little too late. It has been a hard two weeks on the road and we are looking forward to coming back and playing at home.”
The day started with the Noles losing the doubles point for the sixth time this season. The Noles took an early lead on court two but fell behind early on courts one and three. FSU struck first as freshman Bryn Nahrung and redshirt senior Lucas Poullain grabbed their first win of the season together with a 6-4 win. After being down 3-1, junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila tied it up at three. They fell behind once again and Miami took their first doubles win on court one, 6-3. Miami clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win on court three.
Miami jumped out in singles to take five first set and turned three of those into points. Court three was the first to finish as Miami’s Dane Dunlap defeated freshman Richard Thongoana 6-3, 6-4.
With their backs against the wall, FSU forced third sets on courts two and five after Poullain took the first set on court one. The Noles continued to battle before Miami took court six and a 3-0 lead. Miami capped off the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court 4.

Noles Defeat Abilene Christian, 6-1.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 41st ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (11-5, 1-2) ended their three-game skid with a 6-1 win over Abilene Christian (14-4) Wednesday night.
“Abilene Christian has a really good team,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “They are probably an NCAA qualifying team. I thought they did a great job competing tonight. I was pleased that Sebastian (Arcila) got both a doubles and a singles win today as he clinched the match for us tonight. We played four newcomers and they all came away with either a singles or doubles win.”
The Noles started the day with their 10th doubles point of the season. The freshman duo of Richard Thongoana and Juan Martin Jalif earned the first doubles win with a 6-3 win on court three. Junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila capped off the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court one. It was their fifth dual match doubles win together this season.
Florida State kept firing in singles play earning two quick wins on courts one and two. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain grabbed the first win on court one 6-2, 6-1. Knaff finished quickly after with a 6-0, 6-2 win on court two.
Arcila clinched the match on court six with a dominating second set. He won 7-5, 6-0 for his third dual match win of the season and third match clincher of 2019.
With the match already clinched Thongoana and junior Enzo Le Seguillon went on to win. Thongoana lost the first set before bouncing back to take the second 6-0 and the third 6-2. Le Seguillon was down 4-0 in the first set before fighting back to take it 7-5. He went into a tiebreaker in the second set before his opponent had to retire due to cramps.
“We now need to get ready for two ACC matches this weekend and hopefully get a great crown on Friday and Sunday,” said Hultquist.

Noles Defeat Boston College 7-0.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 41st ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (12-5, 2-2) came away with their eighth shutout
win of the season with a 7-0 victory over Boston College (4-7, 0-4).
“I was pleased with how we played today, especially with the guys who lost the first sets and fought to come back and win their matches,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Juni (Juan Martin Jalif) took home the game ball getting his first win. He did a great job of getting out front and finishing his match off. One of the keys to the match was on Richard’s court. He was down 4-1 in the first set and came back to win in a tiebreaker. After that, we came back and took control of all of the other courts. Once Richard one the first set we did not lose another set the entire match.”
The Noles started the day winning their 11th doubles point of the season after victories on courts one and two. Redshirt senior Lucas Poulain and freshman Bryn Nahrung improved 2-0 together with a 6-3 win on court two. Sophomore Sebastian Arcila and freshman Juan Martin Jalif clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court one.
Lucas started off singles with a quick win to give FSU a 2-0 lead. He won 6-3, 6-2 on court one to improve to 9-1 on the year. Jalif and freshman Richard Thongoana were both on match point before the rain began to fall and the match was moved indoors.
After a hop, skip, and a jump over to the indoor courts the Seminoles quickly finished off the Eagles with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win from Thongoana and a 6-2, 6-3 win from Jalif. It was Jalif’s first career singles win and his first career match clincher.
The Seminoles finished off the sweep with three more wins all in three sets. Junior Enzo Le Seguillon was first with a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0(7) win, he was followed by sophomore Chase Wood, and then Arcila to complete the sweep.

No Luck for The Irish as the Noles Down No. 11 Notre Dame 4-3.
Freshman Juan Martin Jalif clinched the match in three sets.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 41st ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (13-5, 3-2) upset No. 11 Notre Dame (10-8, 3-2) 4-3. The Noles lost the doubles point but mounted a comeback in singles to become victorious.
“It was a great singles effort today to beat the No. 11 team in the country,” said Dwayne Hultquist. “It was a great win for us here at home. We showed great competitive fight and it seems that every year we play Notre Dame it is one of these battles.”
The Noles fell behind early after a poor showing in doubles. The Irish took court three 6-0 before capturing court two 6-3 en route to the doubles point.
The whole match changed once singles started as Florida State jumped out to take five of six first sets. Junior Enzo Le Seguillon earned the first Seminole point on court six with a dominant 6-3, 6-3 win. Notre Dame pushed back to take the lead again after winning on court three 6-4, 6-3. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain tied things back up with a 6-3, 6-3 win of his own on court one to improve to 10-1 on the year.
“There were a lot of key things that happened today including beneficial momentum swings,” said Hultquist. “It was really important that we came out to win five first sets in singles after we got off to a slow start in doubles.”
The Noles took their first lead of the match after junior Alex Knaff earned a huge three-set win on court two. Knaff took the first set 6-2 before losing the second 6-3. Alex fell behind 2-1 early in the third but mounted a huge comeback winning five of the last six games to take the set 6-3 and give the Noles a 3-2 lead.
“Notre Dame made a great run to come back and take the edge but Alex’s comeback in the third was pretty key,” said Hultquist. “He was down a break but came back to win.”
Notre Dame tied it up once again with a three-set win on court five and it all came down to freshman Juan Martin Jalif. Jalif battled to a first set tiebreaker win before losing in the second set 6-1. With the match coming down to the freshman from Argentina, Jalif stepped up his game big time. He and Notre Dame’s Guillermo Cabrera kept swapping service games until Jalif came up big and broke his opponent for the match. It was Jalif’s second career win, with both being match clinchers.
“Juni had a very tight first set and in the second he was dominated,” said Hultquist. “In the third, he served really well and I am really proud of him. He is getting the feel for college tennis and him coming through today was a big win.”

Men’s Tennis Holds on to Take Down Louisville 4-3.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 27th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (13-5, 4-2) earned a hard-fought 4-3 win over Louisville (12-8, 1-5) in Kentucky on Friday afternoon.
“That was a total team effort today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We have a lot of injuries and it took a total team battle to come away with this win.”
The Noles grabbed an early 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point. Florida State took court three after a 6-2 win by sophomore Chase Wood and freshman Richard Thongoana. Courts one and two both went to a tiebreak and saw the Seminoles take court one and the doubles point.
“I was proud with our fight today in doubles,” said Hultquist. “We forced two tiebreakers and had Alex and Sebastian come back from being down early. Lucas and Bryn were not able to finish their match but were up in the breaker.”
Florida State started singles off by taking three first sets. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain quickly turned his into a Seminoles point by winning 6-3, 6-0 on court one. Sophomore Sebastian Arcila added to the Florida State lead by winning 6-2, 7-5 on court six.
Up 3-0 the Garnet and Gold gave up three straight courts and the match came down to junior Alex Knaff on court two. After courts three, four and five lost, Knaff was down a set and break and was forced to make an incredible comeback. After losing the first 6-4, he battled to take the second set 7-5. He controlled the third set the whole time winning it 6-2 and clinching the Seminole win.
“Alex being able to come back from down a set and a break and win his match was huge,” said Hultquist. “I am proud of how he competed today, especially in the situation he was in with the whole match coming down to him.”

Men’s Tennis Falls to No. 23 NC State 4-1.
RALEIGH, NC. – The 26th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (14-6, 4-3) fell to No. 23 NC State (14-7, 5-2) on Friday.
“Our guys battled today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We had good play today in doubles, especially on court one, getting a win over a ranked team. I thought that was some of the best play all season out of Alex and Sebastian. We had an opportunity to win the doubles point but losing two deuce points on court two cost us. The highlight of the day was Lucas on court one defeating one of the top college players in the country.”
The day got started with the Noles losing the doubles point. NC State took court three 6-4 to start the match. Junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila tied the doubles point with a 7-6(2) on court one over the 57th ranked doubles team. NC State capped off doubles with a 7-5 win on court two.
Singles got started as redshirt senior Lucas Poullain tied the match at one. He dominated his match against No. 18 Alexis Galarneau 6-1, 6-2. He has now won 36 of his last 38 matches.
Everything changed after that match as NC State went on to take three straight courts to clinch the match 4-1. The Wolfpack first took court six 6-2, 6-3 to take a 2-1 lead. NC State then took court four in straight sets and court five in three sets to clinch the match.
Knaff and freshman Juan Martin Jalif were unable to finish their matches.

Men’s Tennis Falls to No. 11 North Carolina 6-1.
CHAPEL HILL, N. C. – The 26th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (14-7, 4-4) fell to No. 11 North Carolina (13-4, 5-3) 6-1 on Sunday.
“North Carolina was just too good today,” said head Coach Dwayne Hultquist. “They played really well but we competed today and I saw some good things out of Lucas and Sebastian. Lucas was right in there with one of the best players in college tennis. I was really pleased with Sebastian getting a win on court six over a guy we have had trouble with the last few seasons.”
The Noles got out of the gates slow falling behind on all three doubles courts. North Carolina went on two take courts one and two. Court two was first as UNC won 6-2, they quickly followed that up with a 6-3 win on court one to clinch the doubles point.
Florida State took just one first set in singles. North Carolina then jumped out to a 6-0 lead after taking courts one through five in straight sets. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain battled against 26th ranked William Blumberg in the second set on court one. Down 5-3 Poullain tied it up and forced a tiebreaker but could not come through.
Sophomore Sebastian Arcila grabbed FSU’s only point of the match on court six. He defeated UNC’s Mac Kiger. Kiger was 2-0 against FSU a season ago. Arcila jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set but Kiger was able to tie it at four. The two exchanged points until they went into a tiebreaker that Arcila won. Kiger claimed the second set to force a third set super-breaker. Arcila prevailed to earn an 11-9 win.

Men’s Tennis Falls to Virginia 4-1.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 31 ranked Florida State men’s tennis team fell No. 5 Virginia at home on Friday night, 4-1.
“I thought it was a really good effort from our guys with us being down several starters,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “I thought we got great effort from Sebastian (Arcila) and Chase (Wood). The whole team did well. I thought Juan (Martin Jalif) got off to a great start and positioned himself to win.”
“We had five matches deep into the third set. It really looked like we were going to be up 3-1 at one stage. Give Virginia a lot of credit for how they came back. I thought the team gave a great effort and it shows why we’ve been tough to beat at home here.”
The Seminoles (14-8, 4-5) began play dropping the doubles point to the Cavaliers (16-3, 7-2), which went down to a tiebreaker on court one. After redshirt senior Lucas Poullain and freshman Bryn Nahrung lost 6-4 on court two, sophomore Chase Wood and freshman Juan Martin Jalif earned a 6-3 victory on court three.
Junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila battled from an early 4-2 deficit to send the game to a tiebreaker before ultimately falling 7-6 (4) to the 59th ranked doubles pair in the nation, Henrik Wiersholm and Brandon Nakashima.
Florida State started off strong in singles play, as Arcila took home the first singles point of the night. After dropping the first set 7-5, the Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico native powered his way through the next two sets, winning the second set 6-3 and dominating the third set 6-2.
Poullain, who ranks as the No. 39 singles player in the country, displayed a promising outing in a losing effort. After dropping the first set 6-4, he forced a third set after winning 6-3 in the second set. He would ultimately fall to No. 10 Carl Soderlund in the third set 6-3.
Alex Knaff faced off against No. 63 Brandon Nakashima, taking him to three sets. After dropping the first set 6-3, Knaff would hang toe-to-toe with the ranked Cavalier, winning the second set 6-4. He would lose the third set 6-4.
Moments later, Juan Martin Jalif would drop a heartbreaker in the third set that would determine the fate of the match. Jalif jumped out to a dominating start, as he won the first three points of the first set in ultimately winning 6-2. After he lost 6-2 in the second set, the third set proved to be a back-and-forth affair where he eventually fell 7-5.
Chase Wood and junior Enzo Le Seguillon would both go on to an unfinished result. After losing the first set 6-2, Wood dominated the second set 6-1 and would leave the court with the third set tied at five. Le Seguillon was tied 6-6 in the second set as the match concluded.
Although they fell 4-1, the Noles showed promised in singles play. Florida State forced five of six singles matches into a third set, including two matches against ranked opponents.

Men’s Tennis Wins a Thriller over No. 43 Virginia Tech.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 31 ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (15-8, 5-5) took down No. 43 Virginia Tech (15-7, 5-5) 4-3 in a thriller that came down to Enzo Le Seguillon in a tiebreaker.
“It was a great win today on Lucas’s senior day,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “The doubles point gave us a good start. We were getting beat pretty bad at the beginning of singles, losing five of the first six first sets but we hung in there. We battled back all day long. Down 3-1 and coming back to win the final three matches and down four team match points with Enzo was huge. Enzo came in clutch and he deserves to be the player of the day.”
The Noles got things underway by winning the doubles point that proved to be the crucial point. Junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila played as good as they have all season to give FSU a 1-0 lead in doubles. Lucas Poullain along with freshman Bryn Nahrung clinched the doubles point 7-5 on court two.
Singles started out with the Noles falling behind by losing five of the six first sets. They quickly got things turned around to win three of the second sets and that turned out to be all they needed.
After leading 1-0 after doubles FSU fell behind 3-1 halfway through singles. Court five was the first to fall as Virginia Tech won in straight sets. The Hokies then took courts two and three at almost the same time to take a 3-1 lead.
Sophomore Chase Wood got the Noles on the board with a singles win on court six. He took the first set 6-4 but was in a battle in the second. They were swapping points the whole set going to a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was back and forth as well as Wood pulled it off with a 9-7 win.
Poullain was next as he won his second match on senior day with a win court one. He lost the first set 6-3 but came back to take the second set 6-2. In the third set, the two continued to hold serve until he took the final two games to take the court and tie the match up at three.
The match came down to Poullain’s fellow Frenchman, Enzo. Enzo lost the first set 6-4 on court four but dominated the second set 6-1 to force a match-deciding third set. He too was in a battle that was sent into a tiebreaker. Back and forth Enzo took a 6-4 lead. Virginia Tech’s Carlo Donato tied the breaker up at six and then took a 7-6 but Le Seguillon was not fazed. He won the next three points to take the tiebreaker and clinch the match.

Men’s Tennis Falls to Wake Forest 4-0.
WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – The 29th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (16-9, 5-6) fell to No. 4 Wake Forest (25-3, 11-0) 4-0 on Friday afternoon. The Noles had a couple of chances to get some points but came up a little short.
“It was a competitive match today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We had a lot of opportunities to win the doubles point today and that was a key to the match. We had some opportunities in singles as well. Lucas was up in the first set and couldn’t win the first and that definitely hurt us. I am very proud of how Alex and Enzo played today. We just lost too many deuce points and that was the difference.”
Wake took a 1-0 lead after capturing the doubles point. The Noles took an early lead in doubles with a big win by junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila. The duo took court one 6-4 over the 62nd ranked Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev. Courts two and three were battles. Wake Forest took court two 6-4 after the match was tied at four to knot up the doubles point up. They then court three 6-3 to take the doubles point.
The Noles started slowly in singles, losing five first sets. Enzo Le Seguillon earned the solo first set for the Garnet and Gold. Wake took a 2-0 lead after a 6-1, 6-4 win on court six and expanded that to a 3-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court five. Junior Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar had a 4-3 lead in the first set on court five but could not hold on as his opponent would go on to take the final three games of the set.
Wake Forest clinched the match with a win on court three, 6-4, 6-4. The Noles were in contention on all three courts that did not finish. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain had a 4-2 lead in the first set but was forced into a tiebreaker. In that beaker, he jumped out to a 4-1 lead and once again could not finish it as he went on to lose the first set 7-6 (5).
Knaff lost the first set 6-2 but bounced back to take the second set over third-ranked Petros Chrysochos in a tiebreaker. Their match was tied 1-1 in the third set. Le Seguillon took his first set 7-5 and was up a break in the second set when the match was finished.

Bhullar Lifts Men’s Tennis Over No. 49 Duke.
DURHAM, N.C. – The 29th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (17-9, 6-6) won their final regular season match 4-3 over No. 49 Duke (10-13, 4-8). Bhullar in his second match back from injury came in clutch clinching the match.
“Nothing in this conference ever comes easy,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Being able to beat Duke at their place on senior day with a lot on the line showed what we are capable of. We got great performances on courts one through three and then Rana came up big for us at the end.”
For the second match in a row, the Seminole lost the doubles point. All three courts started out tied at one. The momentum then turned to the Blue Devils as they took a 3-2 lead on all three courts. Duke clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court two and a 6-3 win on court three.
Singles got started as the Noles took four of six first sets, that was all they needed. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain continued his winning ways as he earned his 14th win of the spring and fifth win over a ranked opponent. He dominated No. 99 Nick Stachowiak 6-1, 6-1. Florida State and Duke then swapped points as the Noles took court two with a 6-3, 6-1 win by junior Alex Knaff. The Blue Devils earned a 6-0, 6-3 win on court six.
After heading indoors due to rain, freshman Juan Martin Jalif gave the Garnet and Gold their first lead of the day with a big win on court three. He took the first set 6-3 and dominated the second set 6-2 just his third win of the spring. Duke once again tied the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win of their own on court four.
The match would come down to junior Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar who had missed the team’s last 10 matches before Friday. In the first set, he fell behind 4-2 before storming back to take five of the final six games and the first set 7-5. Bhullar would go on to lose the second set 6-1. The third set was back and forth and with Bhullar down 5-4 he would go on to win the final three games and clinch the match 7-5.
“Rana battled and came up clutch for us,” said Hultquist. “In his second match back from injury he battled. He fought down 5-4 and hit three straight winners to tie the match at five. It was great to see him win the final six points to clinch the match for us.”

Men’s Tennis Advanced to ACC Quarterfinals with a 4-2 win over Duke.
CARY, N.C. – The No. 31 Florida State men’s tennis team (18-9) advanced to the ACC Tournament quarterfinals with a 4-2 win over Duke. The Noles will take on third-seeded Virginia tomorrow at 12:00 pm.
“I think it sometimes really hard to play a team close together and now we have had to do it two years in a row, beating Duke the last weekend of the season and then having to play them in the first round of the tournament,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Today some of the matches switched and some were a lot more difficult this time. The matches we won again at one, two and three were all harder than they were last week.”
Just like four days ago the Seminoles lost the doubles point to the Blue Devils. Junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila got off to a hot start taking court one 6-3. Duke was first able to take court two 6-2. The doubles point came down to sophomore Chase Wood and freshman Juan Martin Jalif. The two were back and forth with Dukes No. 3 pair until it went into a tiebreaker. Duke came away with doubles point after a 9-7 win in the tiebreaker.
“I am really pleased with the effort we got after losing the doubles point,” said Hultquist. “We were down most of the day but just kept battling back. At the end we gained the momentum.”
Singles was a battle as three of the courts went three sets. The Noles went down 2-0 early after Duke’s Sean Sculley won 6-3, 6-0 over junior Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain remained consistent as he has all season long, getting the Noles on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 100 Nick Stachowiak.
That was the first of four straight Seminole wins. Knaff was next, taking down Spencer Furman for the second time in a week on court two. FSU was in a battle on the final three courts. Jalif lost the first and took the second set to force a third set, Enzo Le Seguillon took the first set but lost the second and was going to a third set and Richard Thongoana lost the first before taking the second set to force a third.
Thongoana ended up capturing the third Seminole point. He was down 2-1 early in the third set before winning five of the last six games to take the point. Just minutes later Jalif clinched the match with a 6-4 third set win on court three.
“Richard, who is recovering from an illness stepped up today and won in three sets and then Juni clinched it,” said Hultquist. “I am really pleased with how Juni bounced back after losing the first set. He played really good tennis to close it out. If you look at this year’s team they are showing the ability to win these close matches heading into the postseason.”

Men’s Tennis Falls to Virginia 4-0 in the ACC Tournament Quarterfinals.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After being forced to head from Cary to Chapel Hill due
to weather, the Seminoles fell to second-seeded Virginia 4-0 in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals.
“I felt like we really had a good opportunity,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Late in the first set, we were up a break on four courts. I thought Virginia really took it to us after that and we never got the momentum back. We got good efforts and the energy was really good early on. They just controlled the match after that.”
For the second time in two matches of the ACC Tournament, the Noles lost the doubles point. Court three fell first as Virginia won 6-1. Courts one and two were in battles. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain and freshman Bryn Nahrung were in a back and forth match on court two. They were down 6-5 before Virginia clinched the doubles point on court one 6-3.
The Noles got off to a promising start to begin singles with early leads in the first set on courts one, four, five and six. Virginia flipped the momentum and ended up taking five of six first sets.
Freshman Richard Thongoana was the lone Seminole to earn a first set win as he won 6-4 over Matthew Lord. Virginia took a 2-0 lead after taking court three 6-3, 6-2. They expanded their lead to 3-0 with a win on court one 7-5, 6-0. Virginia clinched the match 4-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 on court two.

Men’s Tennis Advances to NCAA Second Round After a 4-3 Battle with UCF.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After the threat of weather forced an early morning match between the Florida State men’s tennis team (19-10) and UCF, the Seminoles got off to a sluggish start but was able to win the match in a thriller.
“We came into the day knowing it was going to be a battle,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We came out strong in doubles and had a chance to take the point, it just did not go our way. The top of the lineup helped made the difference today. Alex and Richard got off to fast starts and Lucas did what he always does taking the match on court one.”
The day got started with the Noles falling behind 1-0 after losing the doubles point. Florida State took an early 2-1 lead on courts one and three while being tied 1-1 on court two. Junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila jumped out to a 4-1 lead on court one while redshirt senior Lucas Poullain and freshman Juan Martin Jalif fell behind 3-1 on court two. Knaff and Arcila went on to take court one 6-3, while Poullain and Jalif fell 6-4 on court two. The doubles point came down to sophomore Chase Wood and freshman Bryn Nahrung on court three. The two were back and forth until they were tied 5-5. UCF went on to take the finals two games and the match 7-5 for the doubles point.
Singles started with the Seminoles and Knights splitting three sets apiece. Freshman Richard Thongoana took the first set with ease 6-3. He came back in the second set to take it 6-4 to get the first FSU point on the board.
Knaff then gave the Garnet and Gold their first lead of the match with a win on court two. Up 4-3 in the first set, Knaff went on to win the final two games to take the first set 6-3. He took a 4-2 lead in the second set before finishing off UCF 6-3 in the second set.
UCF then tied the match back up at two with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court six. Poullain once again gave Florida State the lead after a win over 43rd ranked Gabriel Decamps. The two traded points back and forth in the first set until Lucas took the first set 7-5. Down 3-2 in the second set, Poullain won the final four games of the set to take it 6-3 and gave FSU a 3-2 lead in the match.
The match got tied up again as UCF took court four 7-6, 6-1. The match came down to Jalif on court three. He lost the first set 6-4 and took the second set 6-4 to force a match-deciding third set. Tied 3-3 in the third set, Jalif held his opponent to take a 5-3 lead. Then the rain began to fall.
“The momentum of the match flipped in the second set when Juni forced it to 5-4 in the set and went on to win the match,” said Hultquist.
After an over two-hour rain delay, Jalif came out to win three of the final four points to take the match on a deuce point.

The day began with a highly contested doubles point that went into a tiebreaker. The Gators took court three with ease 6-1. Junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila tied the doubles point up with their second doubles win of the tournament 6-3 on court one. Just like yesterday’s match which came down to freshman Juan Martin Jalif, the doubles point came down to Jalif and his partner redshirt senior Lucas Poullain. They went back and forth until the match went into a tiebreaker. The duo went down 5-2 in the breaker and could not come back as Florida’s Alfredo Perez and Sam Riffice won the breaker to clinch the match.
“Doubles was huge today and we came up a little short,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We had three match points on court two after Alex and Sebastian played really well on court one. If we would have been able to take the doubles point, I feel like that would have given us some momentum into singles.”
Florida came out hot in singles taking five first sets and turning that into two early points. The Gators took court five with a 6-0, 6-2 win. They expanded their lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-4 win on court six. Sophomore Sebastian Arcila got swept in the first set and fell behind 4-1 in the second. He battled back to make it 5-4 but that was not enough as Florida’s McClain Kessler took the second set 6-4 and a 3-0 lead.
Freshman Richard Thongoana was up 5-3 in his first set on court four before getting forced into a tiebreaker that he would go on to lose. While that was going on Jalif won his first set in a tiebreaker and Knaff forced a third set after a 6-0 sweep in the second set.
“Florida jumped out and got us good, taking an early lead in singles,” said Hultquist. “I thought we fought back hard in the second sets. Juni continued to play well after his big win yesterday to clinch the match and Alex did a great job winning the second set. Richard had opportunities up 5-3 in the first set but could not come through.”
The late push was not enough for the Noles as Richard fell 6-2 in the second set to secure the 4-0 win for the Gators.
“This team has not quit all year and plays hard until the end,” said Hultquist. “They did that again today. We have won six of seven matches that have ended with a 4-3 result this season and that is all you can ask for is for the team to fight hard.”
