Bowles Falls In Finals.
Florida State's Clint Bowles fell in the final round of the Regional Championships.
GAINESVILLE, FL - Clint Bowles of the Florida State men's tennis teamed run in the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships ended on Monday in the final singles match. This was the second time the senior reached the final match of the tournament.
Bowles, a native of Tampa, faced off against Will Spencer of Georgia. In the first set, Bowles was down 3-1 but came back to make the set four-all. The crucial game was about fifteen minutes and went back and forth with each opponent having a lot of break and game points. Eventually Bowles got broken by Spencer 5-4. Spencer would go on to win the match 6-4, 6-2.
"I thought it was a very competitive match, very tight," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "Clint made a nice run in the tournament but went down to start the match. Will Spencer played really well, very consistent, and didn't make very many errors. I thought Clint played a good match, I think he played a little bit better yesterday but he played good tennis. The match was very good and well played on both sides."

"I was pleased with the doubles play," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "Connor and Vahid have been playing well and the other two played well as well. Today we got off to a good start. It's always good to get the doubles point and feeling good about what you did."
In singles play, sophomore Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) won quickly on court five 6-4, 6-0 against Mario Rolemberg. Freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) came off the courts moments later with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Niklas Jonsson in his first collegiate dual match of his career.
"I came out pretty nervous coming into my first dual match," described Davis. "But I prepared well for it and I really had a blast out there. I had a lot of fun and it was cool getting to play in front of some people. That was a first for me because playing junior tennis is a real individual sport, so that never really happens."
Clinching the match for the Seminoles was sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) who won 6-2, 6-2 on court two against Anas Rouchdi. No. 42 senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) followed suit and came off court one with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Branko Weber.
On court three, senior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) nabbed his first win of the season with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Sami Ghorbel. Closing it out for the Seminoles was sophomore Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) who won the first set 6-3 but then was down 5-2 in the second set but came back to win it 7-5 over Jamie Eccleton.
"I thought Blake was really good and got off the court quick," continued Hultquist. "I thought everyone played pretty well. I think a couple guys had tougher second sets but they came back to win all the matches in straight sets. We know Saturday we're going to have a very tough match with Nebraska so hopefully that helps get us ready."
In doubles play the Seminole won all three of their doubles matches since February 21, 2010 when they beat No. 16 Pepperdine 4-3. Mirzadeh and Smith extended their winning streak to four matches after an 8-2 victory over Jonsson and Rolemberg on court one.
"I'm happy with the way Vahid (Mirzadeh) and I are playing," said Smith. "We've been doing pretty well. Vahid was injured most of the fall and really didn't play much but we're doing well so far and hopefully it keeps going through."
On court two Bucaro and Reed paired up to win 8-4 over Ghorbel and Rouchdi. Shutting out Weber and Eccleton 8-0 on court three was Bowles and Davis.
The Seminoles will play at home on Saturday and Sunday to play host for the Seminole Quad. Florida State plays Nebraska on January 22 at 9:00 a.m. at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center then Florida Atlantic at 3:00 p.m. Sunday's match against Furman begins at noon to close the tournament. Admission is free at all home matches.

Florida State starts the season 4-0 for the first time since 2008.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The men's tennis team (4-0) closed out the Seminole Quad with a 6-1 victory over Furman. This is the first time Florida State has opened the season with four wins since 2008. Once again, the Seminoles continued to be strong in doubles by winning all three matches at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. Florida State closed the Seminole Quad winning all three matches including yesterday's wins against No. 42 Nebraska and FAU.
"I think early in the season it's always important to play more matches," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "It's tough, the guys are tired now, but we'll take a day off tomorrow. We want to be ready in match play for National Indoors and playing USC. It's going to be really tough out there with two of the top six teams in the country and Fresno State who is No. 28. I think the team will hopefully come together, have a fun time out there and come out of California with some wins."
In doubles play, senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) quickly won their seventh straight doubles match of the year by topping Sawyer Duncan and Andrew Mellow 8-1 on court one. In their first match of the year, senior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) won 8-1 over Marco Are and Bobby Browning on court three. Sophomores Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) closed it out for the team, with an 8-6 win on court two over Alex Christ and Joel Cook.
With the 1-0 lead the Seminoles stormed the court for singles. Smith came off the courts first for the `Noles to win his sixth match of the spring. He defeated Christ 6-2, 6-1 on court three. No. 37 Bowles followed suit and came off court two with the 6-0, 6-2 match over Mellow.
"I played really well this weekend," said Bowles. "It was a big turnaround from Sarasota, I lost every match then I won every match. This is going to be a good confidence booster for all of us. We all played really well this weekend in singles and doubles. The momentum will be carried on to California."
Clinching the match was Reed on court four. Despite being down 5-0 in the first set, Reed turned it around and won 11 straight games to get the 7-5, 6-2 win over Tyler Droll. No. 42 Mirzadeh won his fifth straight singles match by defeating Duncan 6-3, 6-4 on court one. Bucaro nabbed the last Florida State win of the day by defeating Watson George 7-6(5), 6-3 on court six.

'Noles Fall 6-1 To No. 2 USC.
No. 42 Vahid Mirzadeh upsets No. 18 Daniel Nguyen 7-6, 5-7, 10-7.
LOS ANGELES, CA - Falling for the first time this season, the No. 27 Florida State men's tennis team lost 6-1 to No. 2 Southern California on the road at Marks Stadium. The Seminoles record falls to 4-1while first-time opponent USC goes up to 3-0. No. 42 Vahid Mirzadeh won both of his matches of the day after he nabbed the only point for the `Noles by upsetting the No. 18 player in the nation.
"I thought we played okay but I think we need to play better," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "USC has a lot of starters back from last year's team who won the National Title. I thought they played great and showed why they won the National Title the last two years."
In doubles play, the senior Mirzadeh and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) nabbed an 8-6 win over Steve Johnson and Ray Sarmiento on court one. The deciding match came down to court three with sophomores Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) and Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) facing the No. 51 duo of Jaak Poldma and JT Sundling. The match was close but Florida State dropped it 8-4.
"Connor and Vahid are trying to make the NCAA tournament in doubles," continued Hultquist. "They have been playing well all year long. They beat a very good team. I thought that was real positive."
In singles play, the Seminoles started strong with Mirzadeh, Reed, Bucaro and freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) were able to win the first sets, but they each lost the second one to force a third set.
"We certainly had a good start in singles," stated Hultquist. "But it was a long four hour battle. I thought Anderson (Reed), Andres (Bucaro) and Blake (Davis) all played really good first sets but then the play came off a little bit."
Mirzadeh, a native of Wellington, Fla., was the only `Nole able to grab a third set win. No. 42 Mirzadeh got his sixth straight singles match win with the 7-6(5), 5-7, 1-0(10-7) victory over No. 18 Daniel Nguyen on court one.
"Daniel Nguyen is a top 20 player and a terrific player for them the last several years," said Hultquist. "I think that was a good hard fought win, it was the last match of the day, even though some of the other matches went three sets. That was a huge win for him personally."
Florida State will face No. 28 Fresno State on Friday, January 28 at 10:00 a.m. PT in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at UCLA.

'Noles Top Fresno State 4-1.
Doubles team Mirzadeh and Smith defeat their eighth straight opponent on the year.
LOS ANGELES, CA - After losing their first match of the season, the No. 27 Florida State men's tennis team (5-1) quickly turned around their play to nab a 4-1 victory over No. 28 Fresno State (5-1). The team is competing at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the campus of UCLA at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Florida State will play the winner of today's match between No. 6 UCLA and No. 33 Minnesota tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. PT.
"I thought it was a well fought match," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "There was a good effort out here today and I'm pleased with it. We beat a good team who won their conference last year so it's a good bounce back after losing the match to USC."
To start off doubles play, sophomores Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) and Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) came on the court first to nab the first win of the day. After being down 4-3 on court three, the duo came back to win five straight games. Senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) secured the doubles point by getting the 8-6 win over the No. 21 team of Boutillier and de Villiers. This marked the eighth straight win by tandem.
"I thought we got off to a very fast start in No. 1 doubles, Fresno State actually came back on us but we held through that," continued Hultquist. "I thought one of the things that was key, and something we really preach a lot, was that on two doubles we were down 7-3 and we fought back to 7-7 which helped out momentum. Three doubles kind of really got it going. I thought the doubles play was very solid."
In singles, the team came out strong to win five of the six first sets. Reed came off the courts first with a very convincing 6-0, 6-0 win over David Ayoun on court five. Smith followed suit and came off the courts next with a 6-2, 6-1 win on court three over Jean-Charles Diame.
Bucaro finished on court six with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Siddarth Alapati to clinch the match for the `Noles. Freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) was only moments away from winning his match before play was stopped.
"We really jumped out early in all the singles matches," said Hultquist. "Connor and Anderson were very quickly off so it was 3-0 real quick. It helped that they jumped on their guys then got off the courts. Andres and Blake were both close to finishing and Andres just happened to win first."

Sophomore Connor Smith defeated his second ranked opponent of the year.
LOS ANGELES, CA - The No. 27 Florida State men's tennis team (5-2) finished the ITA Kick-Off Weekend with a 4-1 loss to No. 6 UCLA (4-0). Although the team lost, Connor Smith notched a win at the Los Angeles Tennis Center against his second ranked opponent of the year.
In doubles play, senior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) came off court two with an 8-6 loss to Alex Brigham and Holden Segura. On court three, sophomores Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) lost to Daniel Kosakowski and Clay Thompson 8-6.
In singles play, sophomore Smith (Tampa, Fla.) came up with the lone win of the day. On court three he was able to upset No. 64 Maxime Tabatruong with a strong 6-0, 6-2 win. This was his second win over a ranked opponent this season.
UCLA clinched the bout by winning the next three singles matches. Holden Seguso defeated Bucaro 6-2, 6-2 on court six while Reed fell 6-1, 7-6(4) to Adrien Puget. Daniel Kosakowski upset No. 37 Clint Bowles 6-4, 6-0 on court one.
When play was suspended senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) was up 6-4, 5-1 to No. 86 Amit Inbar on court two and Davis was up 6-0, 5-7, 2-1 on court four.

'Noles Drops 4-3 Heartbreaker To No. 7 Florida.
Florida State lost the match but nabbed three ranked wins.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No. 27 Florida State men's tennis team (5-3) lost a thrilling 4-3 match to the No. 7 Florida Gators (6-0). The match, which went over four hours, came down to the final court at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center but the Gators pulled out the win their fourth straight match over Florida State.
"It was a great college tennis match," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "Anytime you lose 4-3 you're going to be disappointed and I think we're disappointed. I felt like we could have won the match and we didn't. I thought the crowd was very inspiring and a very fun environment to play in."
In doubles play, sophomores Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) grabbed the first win of the day with a convincing 8-3 win on court two against Sekou Bangoura Jr. and Andres Butz. Florida's Billy Federhofer and Bob van Overbeek defeated senior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) 8-3 on court three.
With the doubles point on the line, senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) came through with the upset on court one with a 8-5 win over the No. 11 duo of Alexandre Lacroix and Nassim Slilam.
The Seminoles tried to use the momentum in singles play, but dropped the first two matches in two sets. Smith came off the courts first with a 6-1, 7-5 loss to No. 28 Bangoura on court three. Reed came off court five losing to Spencer Newman 6-4, 7-5.
Being down 2-1, the Seminoles started a comeback on the courts. No. 42 Mirzadeh faced the No. 4 player in the nation in Lacroix. After previously losing to Lacroix at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southeast Championships, Mirzadeh came up strong in the third set to get the upset. Mirzadeh topped him 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 on court one to tie the match at 2-2.
"I've put in a lot of work so it was a good reward but unfortunately we didn't get that team win," said Mirzadeh. "I'm proud of this team for laying it out there. We're getting closer and closer against these top ten teams."
The Gators quickly won the next match with Bucaro losing 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on court six to Federhofer. No. 37 Bowles quickly tied the match back up with a 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 win over No. 52 van Overbeek on court two.
"I thought we had a great effort from Vahid (Mirzadeh) beating the No. 4 player in the country," continued Hultquist. "He and Connor (Smith) won against the No. 11 team in the country. That's terrific effort, Vahid was hurt and he gutted it out and came back and won. I also think that was the best Clint's (Bowles) played all year."
The final match came down to Davis and Slilam on court four. The freshman won his first set but lost his second to force a third set. The 'Nole was cramping, at one point serving the ball underhanded, but stayed on the court until the final point. Slilam was able to get the 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Davis and clinch the match for Florida.
"I thought we were close," concluded Hultquist. "Maybe if Blake (Davis) doesn't cramp he wins the match. We had four three-set matches and won two. Had we been able to get court three and five into the third set, I think that would have made a difference."
"It's tough for Blake at the end with full body cramping," finished Mirzadeh. "It came down to him and it was unfortunate that he had to cramp. We're just going to have to rest up and work hard for Texas next week."
The Seminoles stay at home and face yet another top 10 team as No. 5 Texas comes to town on Saturday.

'Noles Drop Tight 4-3 Match To No. 5 Texas.
Florida State has lost four straight matches to teams ranked in the top seven.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No. 26 Florida State men's tennis team (5-4) lost its fourth straight match to a team ranked in the top seven today. No. 5 Texas pulled out the tight 4-3 win at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center to increase their record to 7-0.
"I think we're competing well," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "Ultimately at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if it's 4-3, if you win you win, if you lose you lose. I thought we put a lot of effort and energy in it but just came up a little short."
Although the Seminoles lost the doubles point, senior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) won a close 8-7(3) match on court three against Ben Chen and Vasko Mladenov. The No. 5 duo of Ed Corrie and Jean Andersen gave senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) their first loss of the year beating them 8-5 on court one.
In singles play, No. 42 Mirzadeh came off the courts first with a strong 6-0, 6-1 match against Ed Corrie on court one. Last season, Mirzadeh upset Corrie who was ranked No. 10 at the time. Without dropping a game, Davis nabbed his first win over a ranked opponent with a 6-0, 6-0 win on court four against No. 100 Ben Chen.
"Every week it feels like we come in and play another top ten team and every week we lose 4-3," said Davis. "I think the doubles point is huge, we win the doubles point today and obviously we win. We did that against Florida but I felt like I had the match on my racket but I just didn't pull through and clinch it. We don't know who is going to be the last one on the court, but that person has to step up and say I want it more than my opponent."
Florida State had plenty of momentum after those two matches, but Texas pulled out the next three singles matches to clinch the bout. No. 37 Bowles closed out the match with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win on court two against Kellen Damico.
"Seniors Clint and Vahid have won the last two weeks, but our younger players are going to have to play better," concluded Hultquist. "They are certainly good enough, they just haven't come through in the big matches and I think that's what it comes down to."
The Seminoles are off next weekend and won't return to the courts until February 26 when they face rival Miami at home in Tallahassee.

Miami Tops 'Noles 4-3.
Florida State has lost the past four straight matches.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - After losing its first ACC match of the year today, No. 28 Florida State falls to 5-5 on the year. Playing under the bright sun, the two Florida teams played for almost four hours battling back and forth until No. 39 Miami came out on top with the 4-3 win at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
"I thought we were in pretty good shape during the match in the first sets," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "At one point we were up in three matches in the first sets but Miami won the crucial points. They won the tiebreaker at court three and held off some set points at court six. They just came up better in the big points better than we did."
In doubles play, the teams were neck and neck with the No. 13 duo of Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) winning 8-2 on court one against Pedro Ast and Keith Crowley. Miami won the next doubles match to tie it up.
With the doubles point on the line, senior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) battled until the very last point to defeat Eduardo Pavia and Waylon Chin on court three 8-7 (5) in a tiebreaker.
"I think that Clint and Vahid need to get a little bit more help," continued Hultquist. "They played outstanding and won both their singles and doubles matches today. I thought it was a pretty clutch performance in doubles for Clint and Jordan to come back and get the point."
Although the Seminoles had the crowd behind them, the Hurricanes won the first singles matches on courts three and five. Down 2-1, the senior Mirzadeh, who is No. 26 in the nation, fought from being down 5-3 in the first set to win four straight games and win 7-5, 6-3 to tie the match at 2-2. This was his ninth straight win in singles.
"Connor and I played well enough to win today in doubles, but we have to get better and sharper out there," described Mirzadeh. "The singles match was pretty tough today. My opponent came out swinging and hitting great shots, not much I could do except keep chasing down balls and most importantly staying tough mentally even though I was trailing 5-3 in the first set. I was able to put together a good string of games to close the set out."
Miami and Florida State took the next two matches with No. 62 Bowles getting the 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win over the talented Christian Blocker on court three. This win was Bowles third straight win and improved his record to 7-3 in dual match play. It was then deja vu all over again for the 'Noles as the deciding factor came down to the last match on the court. Like the past two matches, it was again a heartbreaking loss when Carl Sundberg took out Kelly-Houston 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 on court four.
"It's really tough to swallow another nail biter but I told the guys in the locker room after the match that we need to start doing extra work on our own to get better individually," said Mirzadeh. "The main thing is we need to do more because right now we are not getting it done so why not go the extra mile so we can say we won 4-3 next time."
The Seminole will hit the road this week with their next three matches on being played in a five day span. The 'Noles travel to No. 51 Clemson on March 4 and then face No. 16 Georgia Tech on March 6, which is will coach Dwayne Hultquist's 300th match at Florida State. Florida State close the road trip with South Florida on March 8.

'Noles Tame Tigers 4-3.
After four straight losses, Florida State snaps its streak while winning its first ACC match of the year.
CLEMSON, SC - The No. 36 Florida State men's tennis team (6-5, 1-1) snapped its four match losing streak with a 4-3 win over the No. 51 Clemson Tigers (10-3, 0-1). Playing indoors for the first time this season, the Seminoles won the doubles point and used the momentum in singles to clinch the match.
"We played a lot of good teams and played well but just came up a little short our last few matches," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "But I really felt the difference of the match today was Connor (Smith). He dropped the first set but came back to win the second one. He played inspired tennis in the third and closed it out. We played indoors which favored Clemson but we got to play in it a little yesterday and I thought some of our guys really adjusted well and played good."
In doubles play senior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) defeated Juan Bolona and Gerardo Meza on court three 8-5. Senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) teamed up to win their 11th match of the season. The duo won 8-3 against Kevin Galloway and Derek DiFazio on court one.
"Vahid played another good match and was solid," continued Hultquist. "It was excellent to see Jordan finish his match off. He got up a set and stayed aggressive while playing a power player."
In singles, No. 21 Mirzadeh extended his winning streak to ten with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Yannick Maden on court one. Coming off the court next for the 'Noles was sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand). On court four, he defeated Gerardo Meza 6-3, 7-5 for his first win of the season.
"I'm really pleased to earn a point for the team and give Connor a chance to pull us through," said Kelly-Houston. "We have another important match on Sunday however and we need to be tough to give us an opportunity to win."
Smith, who had lost his previous three matches, lost his first set of his match but turned it around and won the next two sets to clinch the match for the team. He defeated Kevin Galloway 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on court three.
"It felt great to pull it out being down a set indoors with a tough environment," said Smith. "Hopefully we can all build off this win and play well against Georgia Tech."

'Noles Fall To Georgia Tech 6-1.
Sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston posted the lone win in today's match.
ATLANTA, GA - The No. 36 Florida State men's tennis team (6-6, 1-2) lost to No. 17 Georgia Tech (8-1, 1-0) 6-1 today. The team will finish its spring break road trip on Tuesday when the team faces USF Tuesday. Today's match was head coach Dwayne Hultquist's 300th match at Florida State.
"I thought Georgia Tech played a very good match," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "It was a cold and dreary day. I thought they competed well. I thought we had a chance to win if Clint and Connor would have pushed their matches to a third set. I felt like the difference was that Georgia Tech won a lot of close sets and really stepped it up."
In doubles play, Georgia Tech took at quick lead winning all three matches. The No. 15 duo of Juan Spir and Kevin King gave Florida State's No. 13 duo of Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) and Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) only their second loss of the season.
In singles play, the first match off the courts was the only win for the Seminoles. Sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) defeated Magin Ortiga 6-1, 6-0 on court five.
"I was very pleased with Jordan," continued Hultquist. "I think it was his best match of his career and he won it decisively."
The Yellow Jackets finished off the match by winning the next five matches. In ranked play, No. 16 Guillermo Gomez defeated No. 21 Mirzadeh 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 on court one which snapped his ten match winning streak. No. 50 Spir defeated No. 60 Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) on court two 7-5, 7-6.

'Noles Drop To Bulls.
Freshman Blake Davis posted the lone point in today's match.
TAMPA, FL - The No. 36 Florida State men's tennis team (6-7, 1-2) lost to South Florida (5-2, 0-0) 6-1 today at the USF Varsity Courts. This match closes out a road trip where the Seminoles faced three teams in five days and ended it with a 1-2 record.
"I think that this is a disappointing loss to lose 6-1 here," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "I think USF played very inspired. We had lots of chances. Getting the doubles point would have been pretty key. This was a long road trip, it was our third match of spring break. Maybe that caught up to us a little bit. I think we've got to do a better job of closing sets out and starting second sets better."
In doubles play, the sophomore duo of Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) won the lone doubles match with a 8-3 win on court two over Romain Deridder and Federico Sabogal.
In singles play, USF took off with a quick lead and won five of the six first sets. Freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) came out with the lone win in singles. After dropping his last two matches, he snapped his losing streak with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Sabogal on court five.
In ranked play, No. 60 Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) lost on court two to Wael Kilani 6-4, 7-6 (7). No. 21 Vahid Mirzadeh retired on court one against Lucas Jovita with the score 3-6, 6-4, 2-0.
"I think one thing that hurt us a lot today was Vahid was sick," continued Hultquist. "He played sick and tried to help the team out but eventually got to where he was too tired in the third set of singles."

FSU Drops Match To No. 3 USC.
The Seminoles dropped their second match of the year to the Trojans.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No. 45 Florida State men's tennis team (6-8, 1-2) dropped to No. 3 Southern California (13-2, 2-0) for the second time this season. After a strong outing in doubles, the team failed to build upon the momentum and only won one singl In doubles play, the 'Noles started strong with the unranked sophomore duo of Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) defeating the No. 43 duo of Jaak Poldma and JT Sundling 8-5 on court two.
The unranked tandem of sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) and freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) also posted an upset with an 8-5 win against No. 51 Emilio Gomez and Daniel Nguyen on court three to clinch the doubles point.
"I thought the doubles was really good, maybe the best we've played all year at two and three," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "I also thought it was important that our No. 1 doubles team came back from being down 6-1 and came back to hang in the mat The lone 'Nole to win a singles match was Davis who got the best of Sundling on court five. With a 6-1, 6-3 win, Davis won his second match in a row and now has eight wins on the season.
Coming off the courts first, No. 1 Steve Johnson (USC) got the

'Noles Drop To Hokies 4-3.
Florida State swept doubles for the fourth time this season.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - After dueling in a five hour and fifteen minute match, the No. 46 Florida State men's tennis team (6-9, 1-3) lost 4-3 against No. 36 Virginia Tech (11-5, 3-1) to lose its fourth straight match. The 'Noles did win their ninth doubles point of the year.
"When Blake won the first set I thought it would change the momentum by winning three of the six first sets," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "I felt like the key to the match to put us in a position to win was we didn't win any of the second sets of the matches we lost in the first set."
In doubles play the team came out strong to start the match by sweeping all three matches for the fourth time this season. On court one the No. 15 duo of senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) won 8-6 to defeat the ranked duo of No. 45 Will Beck and Pedro Graber.
Court three clinched the doubles match with sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) and freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) defeating Patrick Daciek and Trpimir Kujundzic in a tiebreaker 9-8 (4).
On court two, sophomores Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) won their second consecutive match against a ranked opponent with a 9-8 (10) win over No. 52 Corrado Degl'Incerti Tocci and Luka Somen.
"I think we've played pretty good doubles all year," continued Hultquist. "Doubles has been good for us all year. I think we're well coached in doubles and I think we play well together and play hard."
Kelly-Houston won his match 7-5, 6-1 on court four over Tocci to give Florida State a 2-1 advantage. After Virginia Tech tied the match back up, No. 26 Mirzadeh defeated No. 45 Somen 6-4, 6-4 to snap his three match losing streak and get the 3-2 advantage. The 'Noles dropped the next singles match to tie the match 3-3.
In familiar territory, the match came down to the last court. Davis won his first set 7-6 (3) while Graber won the next set 6-4. In the third set, Davis was down 3-0 but won three straight games to tie it back at 3-3. The match kept going back and forth until Virginia Tech clinched the match.
"I thought when Blake (Davis) was down 3-0 in the third set he really battled back and played good," concluded Hultquist. "I thought Graber stepped it up at the end and made a couple of good shots."
The Seminoles return back to the courts to face No. 1 Virginia at noon on Sunday. Admission is free to all matches.

No. 1 Cavaliers Sweep Seminoles 7-0.
Florida State falls to 6-10 on the season and 1-4 in the ACC.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The top team in the nation showed why they were No. 1 as the Virginia Cavaliers (20-0, 5-0) swept the No. 46 Florida State men's tennis team (6-10, 1-4) 7-0. The Seminoles were able to push two doubles matches into a tiebreaker, but were unable to nab those wins at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
"I thought we certainly could have gained some momentum if we got the doubles point," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "I thought we played good doubles. We were up 8-7 on number one and number two courts. Had we gotten the doubles point, certainly that would have been a boost to us."
In doubles play the No. 15 duo of senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) faced the No. 3 duo of Michael Shabaz and Drew Courtney on court one. The match battled back and forth to force a tiebreaker where the Cavaliers came out on top 9-8 (5).
In similar fashion on court two, sophomore Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) and Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) clashed with Sanam Singh and Jarmere Jenkins to force a tiebreaker, Florida State failed to capitalize as Virginia won 9-8(3).
Virginia went on to win every set except one in singles play. Senior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) and Bucaro lost their singles matches to make the score 3-0 in Virginia's favor. The match was then suspended for 30 minutes due to weather in the area.
When the teams returned to the courts, Virginia clinched the match as No. 37 Jenkins defeated freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) 6-3, 6-1 on court three.
Falling next was No. 26 Mirzadeh as he lost to No. 8 Shabaz 6-4, 6-1 on court one. Connor Smith dropped next for the 'Noles as No. 32 Courtney won 7-6 (9), 6-1 on court four.
Winning the only set of the day was sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) on court five. No. 105 Uriguen ended up winning the match 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.
"They won a lot of close sets, Jordan (Kelly-Houston) and Connor (Smith) were up a break and lost the first set and Vahid (Mirzadeh) was on serve," continued Hultquist. "For us to stay in a match against clearly the best team in the country, we need to convert on our opportunities. When we didn't convert on those, it kind of made it a lopsided day."

'Noles Stop The Wolfpack 6-1.
The team swept doubles for the fifth time this year as every 'Nole contributed a win today.
RALEIGH, NC - There was no fooling the Seminoles today as the team stopped the Wolfpack with a 6-1 win on Friday, April 1. The No. 47 Florida State men's tennis team (7-10, 2-4) went out and swept doubles then proceeded to win five of the six singles matches against No. 59 NC State (8-10, 0-6) at Pullen Park as each 'Nole posted a win.
"The match could have gotten close, both teams won three first sets," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "Anderson did a good job in closing his match out as well as Vahid. They got up a set and then got up a break and closed it out. Blake was at 4-4 in the second set, broke serve then served it out very confidently and got us the win. I think it helped him a lot that Connor and Clint made good comebacks in the second set."
After dropping both of their first sets in singles, both senior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) fought back and won their second sets to force a third set tiebreaker. Both 'Noles came out victorious in the third set to clinch their matches.
No. 91 Bowles defeated Jamie Pulgar on court two 2-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (10-8) while Smith won 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) on court four against Sanchez Gomez.
"Those were great wins as Clint was down 4-1 and Connor was down 3-0 in the second set," continued Hultquist. "When they came back and pushed it into three sets, it made it easier for Blake to finish it off and clinch the match."
Clinching the match, freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) played on court three against Rafael Paez and won 6-2, 6-4.
No. 24 senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) defeated Dominic Hodgon 6-2, 6-3 on court one while Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) topped Matt Thomson on court six 6-4, 6-3.
The team had a solid effort in doubles as the Seminoles got broke only once to sweep doubles for the fifth time this season. The No. 12 duo of Mirzadeh and Smith grabbed their 13th win of the season with an 8-6 win over Hodgson and Lowe on court one.
On court two, sophomore Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Reed continued to play strong together as they won their 11th match 8-4 over Sullivan and M. Thomson. Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Davis are now 3-1 after an 8-5 win on court three against Pulgar and D. Thomson.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The No. 47 Florida State men's tennis team (7-11, 2-5) was successful in doubles winning their 11th point of the season, but ended up dropping the match at No. 25 Wake Forest (9-8, 3-4) 4-3.
"It was a very good, hard fought match," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "We definitely didn't get the breaks. Vahid has been good for us all year and did have another good weekend going 4-0."
After going 2-0 on Friday against NC State, senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) closed out a successful weekend by winning his singles and doubles matches today. Ranked No. 24 in singles, Mirzadeh defeated No. 63 Jonathan Wolff 6-2, 6-4 on court one.
In doubles play, the No. 12 ranked duo of Mirzadeh and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) beat the No. 36 pair of Iain Atkinson and David Hopkins on court one 8-6. After being down two breaks, the doubles team of sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) and freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) came back to win the match in a tiebreaker to help nab the doubles point. The duo beat Tripper Carleton and Connor Sherwood 9-8(5) on court three.
"I was proud of Blake and Jordan," continued Hultquist. "They were down two breaks and came back and won the doubles in a tiebreaker. I thought that would help us with momentum."
Also in singles play, sophomore Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) won his second straight match in a hard fought three set match against on court six. He defeated Zach Leslie 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.
"I was very proud of Anderson winning at the end," said Hultquist. "I was really proud of how Connor fought back and did a great job of coming back and winning the second set to put himself in position to win."
Smith lost the first set in a tiebreaker, but did fight back to win the second set. Danny Kreyman posted the win over the 'Noles on court four winning 7-6(8), 5-7, 6-3.
Florida State close out its home season next weekend with a bout on Friday against Boston College and will honor seniors Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.), Owen Long (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Mirzadeh on Sunday against Maryland.

'Noles Soar Over Eagles 7-0.
Florida State won the doubles point for the 12th time this season.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No. 41 Florida State men's tennis team came swooping in on Friday to defeat the Boston College Eagles 7-0. The Seminoles (8-11, 3-5) failed to drop a match as Boston College fell to 5-14 and 0-8 in the ACC. The `Noles are now 6-2 in doubles play in the ACC after winning their 12th doubles point of the season.
"It could have been 5-2, but we were glad to get those last two matches in the tiebreakers," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "I think everyone has good confidence going into the next match. I thought once we got our lead, we kind of separated. Some of the guys jumped on their opponent and the second sets went quicker. I think BC's coach has done a great job and their program keeps getting better but I thought it was a great day for us."
The Seminoles soared past the Eagles in doubles as they came out to win all three matches. Senior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) came off the courts first with a 8-5 win on court two for the duo's first match together of the season.
Sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) and freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) are now 5-1 this season after winning 8-3 on court three to secure the doubles point. To close out doubles, the No. 12 duo of senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) won 8-4 on court one to garner their 15th win this season.
Florida State gain control of the match quickly in singles as they won four of the six first sets. Kelly-Houston came off the courts first with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jonathan Schroeder on court five. With a 6-3, 6-3 win on court six over Billy Grokenberger, Reed secured his third consecutive win.
Clinching the match for the team was Davis after he soundly defeated Jonathan Raude 6-1, 6-1on court four. No. 91 Bowles moved up in the record books after a 6-4, 6-4 win on court two over Alex Skinner. Bowles is now tied for third with 92 all-time singles wins. A win on Sunday would mean he would be in a tie for second with former teammate Maciek Sykut.
After dropping their first sets, Mirzadeh and Smith both won their second sets to force third set tiebreakers. Smith came off the courts first after winning the third set. He defeated Erik Kreutzer 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9) on court two while No. 24 Mirzadeh came off last with a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) win on court one against Akash Muppidi.

Senior Day Victory.
Florida State finished out the home season with a 4-3 win over Maryland.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - With the last match of the year at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center, the No. 41 Florida State men's tennis team (9-11, 4-5) defended its home turf by beating No. 43 Maryland (10-10, 2-7) 4-3 on Senior Day. The Seminoles continued to excel in doubles play as the team won their 13th doubles point of the season and are 7-2 in ACC play.
"It moves us up in the ACC standings and it's a good way to build for the rest of the season," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "Certainly it's a good win. The team was very sharp in doubles today. I think it helped Vahid and Connor that they won convincingly and then got ready for singles. It was pretty hot today and they didn't have to spend a lot of energy in doubles."
The teams took the courts under the scorching Florida sun in doubles first. The No. 12 duo of senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) came out and won their fourth straight match by quickly topping Maros Horny and Jan Surovic 8-1 on court one.
Sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) and freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) nabbed their second win over a ranked opponent with an 8-5 win on court three over the No. 71 team of John Collins and Tommy Laine to clinch the doubles point.
In between singles and doubles, the team took a moment to recognize seniors Mirzadeh, Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) and Owen Long (Tallahassee, Fla.) for their contributions to the team.
As soon as the festivities were concluded, the 'Noles stormed back onto the courts to overturn the Terrapins and win four of the six first sets.
Smith came off the courts first with his third win in the last four matches. He handedly beat Jesse Kiuru 6-1, 6-3 on court three. Kelly-Houston came off of the courts next and made the score 3-0 after his 6-3, 6-2 win over Laine on court five.
With the score 3-1, No. 24 Mirzadeh continued with the day's theme of senior day as he clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 86 Horny on court one to finish his playing career in Tallahassee.
"It was a great moment individually and team wise, especially team wise," said Mirzadeh. "It's our second win in a row and third out of four that we've won. It's good for us confidence wise and it will help us for next weekend when we play two good teams in Duke and North Carolina."
"It was a great end on Senior Day for Vahid to clinch the match," continued Hultquist. "I was pretty confident he would do it; he's had a great year. I thought it was great we got Connor and Jordan off quickly in singles."
The Seminoles go on the road next week to face No. 11 Duke and No. 17 North Carolina before the ACC Championships take place on April 21.

'Noles Drop To No. 10 Duke 4-3.
The No. 13 duo of Mirzadeh and Smith upset Duke's No. 7 doubles team.
DURHAM, NC - The No. 41 Florida State men's tennis team (9-12, 4-6) dropped a tight 4-3 match to No. 10 Duke (17-8, 8-2) Friday, April 15. The 'Noles nabbed points from courts four-six in singles today while FSU's No. 13 doubles team upset Duke's No. 7 team.
"Overall we played a pretty good match and thought it was a very good tennis," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "We were just a match short. I thought playing against a top ten team on the road the competitive nature of it was very good."
Last season, the doubles team of then ranked No. 57 Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) came close to upsetting the then No. 1 doubles tandem of Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha but lost 9-8 (11). This season, Mirzadeh and Smith have moved up the rankings and turned up their play as they upset the duo this year 9-8 (5). The No. 13 duo nabbed their 19th match of the year against the No. 7 team.
"Vahid and Connor were down two match points and came back to win it against a top ten ranked team who was ranked last year No. 1 in the country the whole year," said Hultquist. "I thought it was great tennis and they did a good job today in stepping forward and winning."
Smith grabbed the first point for Florida State today as he defeated Fred Saba 6-3, 6-3 on court four. With today's win, he has won his past three matches in a row to give him the second most wins in singles play for the team.
Sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) won FSU's second point against Torsten Wietoska on court five. Kelly-Houston lost his first set but bounced back to win the second and third to take the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. This was Kelly-Houston's third won match in a row.
Coming off the courts last, sophomore Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) nabbed the final point for the 'Noles on court six. Reed won his first set against Luka Marchese but lost his second to force a third set. Reed came through for the team and won 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. With today's win, he has now won four out of his five last matches.
"I was pleased with how well Connor, Jordan and Anderson played for them to get wins," finished Hultquist. "I thought it was a good effort on their part but unfortunately we were one match short. They have been playing very good the last couple of weeks."

Florida State Falls To North Carolina 5-2.
Mirzadeh, Kelly-Houston both earned ranked wins in final regular season match of the year.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Vahid Mirzadeh and Jordan Kelly-Houston both nabbed wins against ranked opponents in the last regular season match of the season. Although the team came out with those two ranked wins, the No. 41 Florida State men's tennis team (9-13, 4-7) lost to No. 19 North Carolina (14-6, 9-2) 5-2 on Sunday, April 17.
"It was a good quality hard-fought match, the kind we've been facing," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "It was 3-2 with two matches to play. Anderson (Reed) was actually up in the third and Andres (Bucaro) was even in the second and had a chance to take it to the third set. North Carolina was playing very good tennis on court five and ended up clinching the match."
In double play sophomores Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) nabbed their 12th win of the spring with a 8-4 win over Cameron Ahari and Brennan Boyajian on court two.
In singles play, UNC came out quick nabbing the first two matches making the score 3-0. Senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.), who is ranked No. 23 in the nation, faced No. 25 Jose Hernandez on court one. Mirzadeh won in two sets 6-2, 7-5 to win his 21st singles match of the year.
Sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) got his first win over a ranked opponent today when we came off the courts to make the score 3-2. He took down No. 90 Joey Burkhardt 6-4, 7-6(7) on court four. With today's win he nabbed his fourth consecutive win and increased his ACC record to 7-4.
"Vahid beat a very strong player and Jordan had a very good win," continued Hultquist. "Given the fact that Blake (Davis) was hurt and out, I felt like our guys competed well. I thought we made a good run, Connor (Smith) was up on both sets and had a chance to win his match. There were five matches we had a chance to win but unfortunately we only got two of those wins. Certainly doubles is a key point and by not getting it, I thought it gave UNC a little more momentum."
North Carolina won the next two matches to clinch the match and make the score 5-2.

'Noles Fall In ACC Championships.
Mirzadeh, Kelly-Houston both earned singles wins in today's loss.
CARY, NC - The No. 8 Seed Florida State men's tennis team fell in the first round of the ACC Championships to No. 9 Seed Maryland 4-2 today, April 21. The 'Noles played doubles for about 30 minutes before rainfall derailed play for almost two hours. When they returned to the courts they lost the doubles point before winning only two singles matches.
"I think the doubles point was important," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "Maryland came out with a lot of energy in doubles. I thought that they were a hungrier team and wanted it more."
In singles play No. 26 senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) posted the first win for the Seminoles defeating No. 106 Maros Horny 6-2, 6-1. This win marked his 16th win in dual match play and ninth ACC match of the year.
The next match off the courts was No. 99 Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) who was defeated by John Collins on court two 7-5, 6-2. This gave Maryland the 2-1 lead.
On court four, sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) nabbed his fifth straight match and his eighth ACC win of the season. He defeated Tommy Laine 6-4, 6-2 to tie the match at 2-2.
"Jordan has been on a nice run lately and Vahid has had a phenomenal year," continued Hultquist. "He really needs to be considered for ACC player of the year after the season he has had."
With three matches left on the court, sophomores Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) both lost only moments after one another for Maryland to clinch the match. Sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) was winning his match 6-3, 5-4 when the match was called.
"We made a nice little run in the beginning of singles," finished Hultquist. "I thought the key part was Andres and Anderson not coming out with wins in their first sets. They were up and if we would have won five first sets, we would have controlled the match."

Men's Tennis Falls At NCAA's.
Florida State dropped its first round NCAA Tournament tennis match 4-0 to Mississippi State.
ATLANTA, GA - The No. 47 Florida State men's tennis team ended their season on Friday, May 13 after an epic four hour 4-0 loss against No. 21 Mississippi State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The match was played at the campus of Georgia Tech.
"I thought it was a very competitive match," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "Any match that goes four hours is competitive. Certainly we had opportunities to get several points. We had a very good chance to win the doubles point with being up breaks at courts one and three. I felt it would have been important to win the doubles. It would have put us at a very good chance to win the match. We were up 4-1 on three doubles and really kind of rolling but they came back strong." In doubles play, sophomore Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) and freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) fell 8-3 to George Coupland and Artem Ilyushin on court two. On court three sophomores Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) fell to James Chaudry and Zach White 8-5. The match on court one was suspended when the point was clinched by the Bulldogs but the Seminoles were leading 7-6.
In singles play Reed lost his match 6-4, 6-0 to No. 86 Louis Cant on court four after suffering full body cramps. Sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) lost to No. 92 Malte Stropp on court three 6-3, 6-4.
Bucaro was playing on court six against Zach White and won his first set. White came back to win the second set and force a third set. White won the set to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 and clinch the match for Mississippi State.
While the score of the match was 4-0, it does not reflect the number of forced third sets and tiebreakers by the 'Noles.
"Jordan had double match point when the match stopped for him to win," continued Hultquist. "Vahid was in position to win after winning the first set, a couple points away. With what was left on the court, it would have been 4-3 maybe. I was pleased with how Andres played. I thought he played a good match and put himself in position to win. I was pleased how Blake fought back down match point to win the set and put it in a third set. It was a good effort from a bunch of our guys and we came up a little bit short."
After losing his first set, Kelly-Houston won his second set to force a third set against No. 60 Coupland. He forced a tiebreaker in the third set and was up 6-4 when the match was clinched. After Davis lost his first set to James Chaudry, he overcame multiple match point attempts by the Bulldog and won the second set 7-5 before the match was stopped.
Senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) was facing No. 61 Ilyushin in the third set when the match was called. His score was 6-4, 6-7 (1), 1-1.
Mirzadeh and Smith will compete in the NCAA Individual Tournament beginning May 25.

Mirzadeh Closes Out Career At Florida State.
Mirzadeh and Smith dropped in the quarterfinals of the Doubles NCAA Championships.
May 28, 2011
STANFORD, CA - After a successful three-year career at Florida State, senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) played in is his last match wearing the Garnet and Gold. Mirzadeh and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) advanced farther in the Doubles NCAA Tournament then anyone before them by reaching the quarterfinals. In a match that was interrupted twice by weather, the Seminoles lost 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2.
Florida State's No. 13 doubles team squared off against Stanford's Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher, the No. 3 team in the nation. In the first set, the teams battled back and forth until tying the set at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, FSU took a quick 3-0 lead to eventually win 7-3.
In the second set, Florida State was serving with the score 1-1 when Stanford broke the 'Noles. That was all Stanford needed to do as they went on to win the second set 6-4. In the third set, Florida State was broken early for Stanford to gain that lead and win 6-2.
Yesterday Mirzadeh and Smith became the first Seminoles to earn All-American Doubles honors since 1995 as they defeated last year's National Champions 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the round of 16.
Mirzadeh and Smith finish their season with a 21-10 record in doubles play.
The Seminoles upset the defending National Champions to earn All-American honors tonight.
May 27, 2011
STANFORD, CA - Florida State's doubles team of senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) earned All-American honors tonight after a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win in the round of 16 of the Doubles NCAA Championships.
"Being All-American is very prestigious and something that is with you the rest of your life," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "I'm just so happy that Vahid and Connor are All-Americans. Vahid's had a terrific career and has done so many great things and now with him being a senior and getting All-American, it is so rightly deserved on his part."
The No. 13 doubles team defeated the No. 2 team in the nation in Drew Courtney and Michael Shabaz of Virginia. The Virginia duo was last year's National Champions.
"I thought the key to the match was that Virginia's guys serve so well, and as well as they served, we were in a lot of games to break," continued Hultquist. "I thought we adjusted our positioning and just kept battling and didn't get discouraged when they had aces and huge serves. I thought the key to the match was that we were in a lot of return games."
After winning the first round 6-4, Virginia won the first three games of the second set to take an early lead. FSU would win three straight games to tie it at 3-3, but Virginia came back to win the set 6-3 to force a third set. In the third set, Florida State served first and took the 1-0 lead. With a 2-1 lead, Florida State broke Virginia and did not look back as they won five games in a row to win the match.
"It was a really high intensity match," said Mirzadeh. "Connor and I knew we had to come out really energetic and treat this as a dual match. We just came out and tried to serve smarter and try to stay in their service games. We did good in the first set then in the second set they served really well but we showed a lot of poise and fight in the third set to pull that match out. They are a really good team so it was a good win for us.
"We're here with one goal and that's to win the title. We've done well so far but we're going to have another tough match tomorrow. Getting All-American is a bonus for my career but we're not done yet."
Mirzadeh and Smith are now 21-9 on the season and will play in the quarterfinals tomorrow. They face the No. 3 team in the nation of Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher of Stanford.
Mirzadeh and Smith are the first Seminoles to win All-American status since 2009 when Jean-Yves Aubone earned it in singles. They are the first doubles team to earn the honor since 1995 when Ken McKenzie and Brian Stanton won it.
The Florida State duo of Mirzadeh and Smith won today's first round match in the NCAA tournament.
May 26, 2011
STANFORD, CA - Florida State's doubles team of senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) won in the first round of the Doubles NCAA Championships today. The duo will return to the courts tomorrow to play in the Round of 16.
"Connor and I just wanted to stick to the basics and not do anything too special for the first round doubles," said Mirzadeh. "We just wanted to play smart tennis and stay poised out there. We didn't really know anything about our opponents; it was our first time ever against them. We tried to get through the first round and we did."
The No. 13 doubles team defeated the No. 39 duo of Romain Bocaert and Lucas Viel of South Alabama 6-4, 6-4. Tomorrow's times will be released after play concludes tonight. The Seminoles will find out their opponent later tonight. They will face the No. 2 seed of Drew Courtney and Michael Shabaz of Virginia or No. 43 Mehdi Bouras and Bernard Schoeman of UNLV.
"I thought they played very well," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "I thought they especially played good off the return serve. They got up early in both sets and were able to close it out. We had a couple of really great scramble points and I thought the fight was really there today."
