Seminole Tennis Starts Strong In Tournament Play.
Led by Jean-Yves Aubone, FSU puts four players in second round.
Sept. 21, 2007
It was a long day at all three sites for Florida State men's tennis, but it was successful as the Seminoles advanced a pair of players at each tournament.
At the Southern Intercollegiate in Athens, GA, 70th ranked sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) won a three set thriller against Florida Atlantic's Marc Abdelnour. Aubone rallied after losing the first set 3-6 to take the last two 6-3, 6-3. Senior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan) was also victorious defeating Charleston's Mike Boyer in three sets 6-0, 2-6, 6-1. Freshman Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) made is collegiate debut on Friday losing a heartbreaker 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 to Louisville's Austen Childs. TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Florida State men's tennis team began its season in dominating fashion by sweeping Florida Atlantic and Mercer on Saturday at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
The Seminoles began the day by beating the Owls 7-0. Florida State took an early 1-0 lead by winning all three doubles matches including a victory by No.31 ranked doubles team of sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) who defeated FAU's Marc Abdelnour and Joe Cadogan 8-4. FSU went on to win the first to singles matches easily to take a 3-0 advantage. The 77th ranked Bowles dispatched of Karl Szmurlo 6-1, 6-1, while sophomore Brad Mixson (Miami, Fla.) handled Darmel Vardag 6-2, 6-1. However, the Seminoles wasted numerous chances to clinch the match until junior Chris Cloer (Brevard, N.C.) finally clinched the match with his win over Corey Smith 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. The best match of the day came when Aubone defeated No. 56 Olivier Saujous in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. A good start to the season for the 18th ranked team in the country.
"I think we accomplished what we wanted to today," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "I knew FAU was a good team and I wouldn't be surprised if they make the NCAA Tournament. It was a good tough match." In Florida State's afternoon match, the team easily took care of Mercer 7-0. In doubles action, Aubone and Bowles took care of the Bears best duo Tobias Ohrstrom and Chapman Mitchell 8-3. In singles, Bowles defeated Ohrstrom 6-2, 6-0 and Cloer once again clinched the match, this time with a victory over Fernando Armendaris 6-2, 6-1.
"In the afternoon matches I thought our guys seemed relaxed and I thought our level of play was higher in the afternoon," said Hultquist. "We've got a lot of depth and we were able to play a couple of extra guys against Mercer."
Florida State will be back on the court next week, just not on the mainland. The Seminoles will travel to Hawaii to take on St. Mary's and Hawaii. For results, visit www.seminoles.com.

No. 18 Florida State Escapes Hawaii With 4-3 Victory.
Jean-Yves - Aubone's upset of No. 25 Andreas Weber fuels victory.
HONOLULU, HI - The Florida State men's tennis team knew their trip to Hawaii wouldn't be easy and the Seminoles 4-3 victory over the host Rainbow Warriors proved just that.
"I think Hawaii is one of the most dangerous teams in the country," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "They're about as good as anyone in the country, by the end of the year they will probably end up having three ranked players."
FSU (4-0) began the match down 1-0 after losing two out of three doubles contests. Senior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan) and junior Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) lost to Hawaii's Jeff Fitch and Dennis Lajola 8-5 and No. 31 ranked Jean-Yves Aubone and Clint Bowles were upset by Andreas Weber and Sascha Heinemann 8-5.
In singles action, it was Aubone's upset win over the No. 25 ranked Weber that put the Seminoles in position to clinch the match. Florida State and Hawaii were tied at three when Aubone took home the winning point. The sophomore took out the highly ranked Rainbow Warrior in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.
"That was the key match for us to win," said Hultquist. "Jean-Yves [Aubone] was down two set points in the first, it was a very hard fought well played match. That's one of the biggest victories of his career."
Junior Chris Cloer (Brevard, N.C.) defeated Spence Mendoza 7-6(4), 6-1, Sykut beat Jeff Fitch 6-2, 6-2 and sophomore Brad Mixson was victorious over Craig Faulk 6-3, 6-1. Hawaii took home two victories over the Seminoles two ranked competitors. Lajola upset the No. 68 ranked Chang 7-5, 6-3 while Heinemann defeated No.78 ranked Bowles 6-3, 7-5.
"Brad (Mixson) did a nice job, the intensity of our guys four through six really set us up," said Hultquist. "Maciek (Sykut) and Chris (Cloer) had great matches and helped put us in position to win the match."
On Thursday, Florida State defeated St. Mary's 5-2. Next up for the Seminoles in a double header on Saturday, January 26 against No. 64 ranked Furman and Florida A&M at Scott Speicher Tennis Center.

No. 17 Florida State Men's Defeats No. 27 South Alabama 6-1.
Sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone defeats his third ranked player of the season.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - No. 17 Florida State men's tennis passed its first big test of the season defeating No. 27 South Alabama 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
"It was 6-1, but it was very close," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "You can tell they have very good players and they are a good team. I thought we played tough and played with good maturity out there. We battled hard."
In singles action sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) continued his great start to the year by defeating No. 20 Jack Baker. Aubone played a near perfect match while coming away with a 7-5, 6-1 victory. The win is Aubone's third against a ranked player this season and his second victory over a top 25 player.
"He's [Aubone] put in the hard work that has really made a difference," Hultquist said. "He's playing great right now and I really liked the way he was able to finish off his opponent today."
Florida State (5-0) was also able to get another strong performance from another sophomore. Brad Mixson (Miami, Fla.) was the first singles match off the court. He disposed of South Alabama's Aaron Krisan in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. The Seminoles other three singles victories were hard to come by. Senior and No. 68 ranked Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan) dropped his first set 6-4 to the Jaguars Marek Sramek before coming from behind to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-2. Freshman and No. 77 ranked Clint Bowles was victorious over Sergio Ramirez in straight sets, but it was a well earned 6-4, 7-5 win. Junior Maciek Sykut split the first two sets with South Alabama's Robert Hodel before pulling out the third set to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Florida State's only defeat came on court five as junior Chris Cloer was upended by R.J. Nagel 7-6(9), 6-2.
"To be a great team you have to be good one through six and right now are top three and bottom three players are all playing well," Hultquist said. "We're winning the majority of our three set matches and that is because of what we've done with strength and conditioning."
In doubles, South Alabama jumped out quickly on courts two and three taking early 3-0 leads. Chang and Mixson dropped the first match on court two losing to Sramek and Ramirez 8-2. However, on court three Sykut and junior Drew Bailey (Tallahassee, Fla.) were able to win eight out of the next 10 games to take a 8-5 victory. The No. 31 ranked team of Aubone and Bowles were able to close out Baker and Hodel 8-5 to take the doubles point.

After losing the doubles point, the Seminoles came back to win the nail biter match Friday night.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No. 16 Florida State (8-1, 1-0) men's tennis team pulled away from No. 36 Georgia Tech (8-2, 0-1) Friday night, February 29, 2008. After losing the doubles point, the Seminoles won five of their singles matches to defeat the Yellow Jackets 5-2 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
"Georgia Tech always competes so hard, I think that is one of the challenges playing them," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "They are such great competitors; I think their coaches do such a great job with that. We were good in a lot of different places and what makes a great team is different people come up in key matches at different times."
The Seminoles were unable to come up with the doubles point with senior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan) and junior Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) coming up with the only victory. They defeated Miguel Muguruza and Eliot Potvin 9-8 on court three.
It was the singles competition that brought the best out of the Seminoles as they were able to win the last five matches to win their first ACC match of the season. Chang started the victories for FSU by defeating Potvin on court three 6-2, 6-3. Sykut won 6-3, 6-1 against Ryan Smith on court five while No. 36 sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) battled Guillermo Gomez to win 7-5, 6-4 on court one. "It feels like the work we did this week paid off," said Mixson. "We talked about how we definitely wanted to start our first ACC match with a win. After doubles we weren't happy with losing the point and we were able to fight back and win the match, it was very key to the start of the ACC season."

No. 16 Florida State Men's Tennis Defeats No. 25 Texas A&M 6-1.
Use strong start in doubles as Seminoles defeat third straight ranked opponent at home.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No. 16 ranked Florida State men's tennis team defeated No. 25 Texas A&M 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Seminoles (9-1, 1-0) were able to win three out of the first four singles match to put away the Aggies (4-4) and remain unbeaten at home.
"I was really pleased with how we played," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "On Friday night they (Texas A&M) beat No. 10 Duke and for us to beat them 6-1 is a really great effort from the whole team.
Florida State won the doubles point, but not without its share of drama. For the third consecutive match, the doubles point came down to a tiebreaker at the No. 1 position. The No. 26 ranked team of Aubone and Bowles came prevailed 9-8(3) over the team of Krajicek and Spencer. At 3-3 in the tiebreaker, the Aggies Spencer double-faulted and in frustration knocked the ball over the fence. The umpire then gave Texas A&M a code violation, making the score 5-3. FSU won the next point and finished the match when Bowles hit a cross-court winner. The Aggies won the first doubles match at the No. 2 position as Chirico and Pollock defeated Chang and Sykut 8-5. Less than five minutes later the No. 3 team of Drew Bailey and Mixson defeated Texas A&M's Bain and Karimi 8-6. Bailey and Mixson jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but the Aggies duo roared back to get to 7-6 before Bailey could serve the match out.
"I thought the key to the match was the doubles point," Hultquist said. "Winning that match in the tiebreaker, I thought our guys really stepped up."
The Seminoles took a 2-0 lead when sophomore Brad Mixson dominated Kayvon Karimi 6-1, 6-0. Mixson needed less than an hour to dispatch of his opponent.
"The other key to the match was Brad [Mixson] dominating his guy and getting off the court really quick," Hultquist said. "I think that helps other guys concentrate on their individual matches and give us an early lead."
FSU senior Sam Chang made the match 3-0 with his victory over the Aggies Wil Spencer 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Chang utilized his precision to move Spencer all around the court frustrating the freshman.
Texas A&M came back to cut the lead to 3-1 when Chris Chirico defeated junior Chris Cloer in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 4 position.
Freshman Clint Bowles came right back to clinch the match for the Seminoles at the No. 2 position. The Tampa, Fla. native defeated Austin Krajicek in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-3. In the first set Bowles went ahead 2-0 in the tiebreaker and never looked back winning 7-5. In the second set Bowles broke Krajicek at 4-3 and then served out the match. At the No. 5 position junior Maciek Sykut defeated Matt Bain in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 to earn the teams fifth point and at the No. 1 position No. 35 ranked sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone grinded out a three-set victory over the Aggies No. 27 Conor Pollack 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4).

No. 17 Seminoles Improve To 10-2 with 4-3 Victory At No. 11 Rice.
FSU fights back for 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Rice.
HOUSTON, TX - The No. 17-ranked Florida State men's tennis team improved to 10-2 with a 4-3 victory over No. 11 Rice (9-4) Tuesday afternoon at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. Freshman Clint Bowles earned his second straight victory over a ranked opponent with a 6-3, 6-3 decision vs. No. 37-ranked Christoph Muller.
In addition to Bowles, Sam Chang (6-2, 3-0) and Brad Mixson (6-4, 6-2) cruised to two-set victories and the match was decided by a hard-fought victory by Maciek Sykut, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 over Rice's Filip Zivojinovic.
"I thought we did a great job coming back from losing the doubles point," Seminole head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "We really jumped to leads on most of the courts and I thought the key match was with Maciek (Sykut) as he was down 4-0 in the first set and fought back and won the fifth game and the tie-breaker and went on to clinch the match. Clint (Bowles), Brad (Mixson) and Sam (Chang), all three of them jumped out to early leads and were able to finish off their matches.
"The other thing I liked was even though it was 4-3, we were in both the other matches so we kind of gave ourselves six opportunities to win the fourth."
The Seminoles evened their Spring Break record with a 1-1 mark while in Texas.
"We played two teams in the Top 11 and coming out of there with one win out of the two, I think, that's a good trip," Hultquist said. "Obviously you want to win every match but beating a ranked team on the road and coming from behind, I was just really pleased with how the team performed. I thought the team really competed hard today."
Florida State will play its third straight road match when the Seminoles travel to Coral Gables, Fla., to face ACC-rival Miami, Saturday, March 15th at 3 p.m., before returning home for a three-match home stand beginning with Clemson on March 18th.

No. 17 Seminoles Defeat In-State Rival No. 18 Miami 5-2.
Sophomore Brad Mixson clinched the victory for the Seminoles in his hometown with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win in singles play.
CORAL GABLES, FL - The No. 17 Florida State men's tennis team concluded their spring break with a bang today, March 15, with a 5-2 victory over No. 18 Miami. The Seminoles are now 11-2, 2-0 while the Hurricanes fell to 9-3, 2-1. FSU has now won five of its last six matches this season.
"First of all Miami is a really good team," stated head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "It was a very hard fought match and to win on the road down here speaks a lot about our team and where we've come from. It was a very, very tight match, 5-2, but 5-2 doesn't show how close it really was."
The Seminoles won at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla. to stop the Hurricane's undefeated home record this season. Although this was considered an away match for the team, three members from south Florida, Brad Mixson, Jean-Yves Aubone and Maciek Sykut, brought a lot of fans representing Florida State to the match.
Miami native sophomore Mixson clinched the victory for the Seminoles in a tight three set match against J.C. Whitner winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 on court six. On court two, No. 91 freshman Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) defeated No. 101 David Rosenfeld 6-2, 6-4.
"It was a great feeling being from Miami and being recruited by Miami to be able and go and clinch the match for my team with all of my family and friends I had there supporting me," stated Mixson. "It was a really hard fought battle and a great match."
Also winning in singles play was junior Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) and senior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan), who both lost in doubles. Sykut started on court four shaky against Carl Sundberg losing his first set, but came back strong for a 0-6, 7-6, 6-1 win. Chang was the final Seminole off the courts as he defeated Vivek Subramanian 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 on court three.
The No. 3 player in the nation, Daniel Vallverdu of Miami, defeated sophomore Aubone on court one 6-2, 6-2. Junior Chris Cloer won the first set 6-1, but rolled his ankle causing him to lose. Keith Crowley won that match for the Hurricanes 1-6, 7-6, 6-1 on court five.
In doubles play, the Seminoles won two of the three matches. The No. 30 duo of Aubone and Bowles defeated the No. 15 doubles team in the nation of Vallverdu and Carl Sundberg 8-3 on court one. Mixson and junior Drew Bailey (Tallahassee, Fla.) won on court three 8-6 against Kieth Crowley and Whitner.

No. 7 Florida State Men's Tennis Dominates No. 61 Clemson After Achieving Highest Ranking In Program History.
Seminoles throttle Clemson 7-0 just hours after learning they were ranked 7th in the country.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Just hours after achieving the highest ranking in program history the No. 7 ranked Florida State men's tennis team dominated the No. 61-ranked Clemson Tigers 7-0 Tuesday evening at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
"Last year we were right there, but we just weren't getting over the hump," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "I thought they did a great job of having that killer instinct and finishing matches off."
"We're very confident and excited about where we are," FSU player Brad Mixson said. "We know our toughest matches are still to come and we didn't take Clemson lightly and we took care of them."
The Seminoles (12-2, 3-0) began the match by dominating the doubles sweeping all three matches. The No. 3 team of junior Drew Bailey and sophomore Brad Mixson got off the court first defeating Clemson's (10-11, 0-3) Gesa Boryachinskiy and Kevin Galloway 8-1. Senior Sam Chang and junior Maciek Sykut clinched the doubles point with their 8-3 victory over the Tigers Carlos Alvarez and Kevin Fleck and the No. 2 position. FSU finished the sweep when the 27th ranked duo in the nation sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone and freshman Clint Bowles defeated Derek DiFazio and Ike Belk 8-5 in No. 1 doubles.
In singles Mixson got the ball rolling on court No. 5 defeating DiFazio in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. The Miami, Fla. native has made a habit of being the first Seminole off the court, especially at home.
"I try to take care of business as quick as possible," said Mixson. "We always stress that at least one or two of our guys take care of business pretty quickly."
The 40th ranked player in the country Aubone was next to finish off his opponent winning the first eight games against Fleck and cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 win on court No. 2. In his first ACC match of his career, red-shirt freshman Bobby Deye defeated Galloway 6-1, 6-2 to clinch the match for Florida State on court No. 6.
"Bobby [Deye] played really well today," Hultquist said. "I thought he was very hungry and very consistent. He controlled points and played with good energy, he's very capable of jumping in there and playing."
Senior Sam Chang lost the first game of his match against Boryachinskiy and then rattled off 12 straight games to dominate court No. 3 6-1, 6-0. Fresh off his second ACC Performer of the Week award, the 58th ranked Bowles out-worked Alvarez at the No. 1 position winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Finishing off the match, Sykut won a first set tiebreaker against Belk and then cruised in the second set to win on court No. 4 7-6(4), 6-3.

No. 7 Florida State Men's Tennis Loses Hard-Fought Match To No. 13 North Carolina.
Tar Heels deal Seminoles first ACC and home losses of the year as Carolina's Clay Donato defeats FSU's Maciek Sykut in three-sets to clinch the match.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The seventh Florida State men's tennis team lost its first ACC match of the season falling to No. 13 North Carolina 4-3 in front a full crowd at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
"I thought they play well and I thought [Clay] Donato played better as the match progressed," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "That was probably the difference in the match. I thought we did a good job of hanging in there, but they played well."
The match was decided at the No. 4 position where junior Maciek Sykut was defeated by UNC's Clay Donato. Sykut won the first set decisively 6-3, but lost the second set 6-2 to send the match into a deciding third-set. Donato jumped out to a 5-1 lead and held on to take the set 6-3 to finish off the Seminoles.
"Maciek [Sykut] was struggling to hold serve a little bit in the second set," Hultquist said. "I was hoping he would be able to finish the match off, but it didn't work out that way."
The match started out well for Florida State (12-3, 3-1) with the Garnet and Gold taking the doubles point for the Tar Heels (10-3, 2-0). Carolina took the first doubles match on court No. 3 as David Stone and Tristan Heinrich defeated junior Drew Bailey and sophomore Brad Mixson 8-6. The Seminoles then countered with a pair up ranked victories beginning with the No. 27-ranked duo of sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone and freshman Clint Bowles upsetting the fourth ranked team in the country Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney 9-7 at the No. 1 position. Senior Sam Chang and Sykut then followed suit on court two defeating 43rd ranked Stefan Hardy and Donato of UNC in a tiebreaker 9-8(4).
I thought our double's teams played great tonight," Hultquist said. "Beating them at one and two is pretty hard to do because the doubles is pretty key to them, I think they plan on that point."
With the Seminoles taking an early 1-0, North Carolina roared back winning the first two singles matches. On court five Mixson was defeated by Fogleman in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 and at the No. 2 position No. 58-ranked Bowles was over-powered by No. 78-ranked Hardy 6-1, 6-2. However, Florida State roared back taking the next two matches beginning with the No. 3 position as Chang upset No. 71 Kearney 6-2, 6-3 while No. 40 Aubone dispatched of No. 112 Benjamin Carlotti 6-3, 6-1. The Tar Heels tied the match at three at the No. 6 position as Will Plyler defeated red-shirt freshman Bobby Deye 6-3, 6-3.

"I think Clint [Bowles] and Jean-Yves [Aubone] getting off and giving us that lead was big," Hultquist said. "I thought every did pretty well and I think we probably need a day off after playing six matches in 16 days."
With the Seminoles up 3-0 Mixson finished off the Blue Devils with his 6-4, 6-4 victory over Stone on court five. Points five and six came from Sykut and Chang respectively. Sykut dominated Arnould on court four while Chang upset No. 57 Carleton at the No. 3 position in three sets 6-4, 6-7(6), 10-3. Do You Believe In "Magic": Junior Maciek Sykut Clinches No. 10 Florida State's Victory Over No. 28 Virginia Tech.
Seminoles battle for ACC road victory as junior Maciek Sykut clinches the win for the Garnet and Gold.
BLACKSBURG, VA - The No. 10 ranked Florida State men's tennis team passed a huge road test on Friday afternoon as the Seminoles defeated No. 28 Virginia Tech 4-3 on the strength of junior Maciek Sykut's three set victory.
"I thought the team fought really hard," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "To get our second big ACC road win is really good for us."
Florida State once again started strong by taking the doubles point. On court one the 27th ranked Seminole duo of sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone and Clint Bowles easily dispatched of Pedro Graber and Nicolas Delgado de Robles of Virginia Tech 8-2. FSU clinched the doubles point on court two as senior Sam Chang and junior Maciek Sykut won their fourth straight doubles match defeating the Hokies Albert Larregola and Brandon Corace 8-6. On court three juniors Drew Bailey and Chris Cloer were defeated by Virginia Tech's Yoann Re and Sebastian Jacques 8-6.

The Seminoles (14-3, 5-1) quickly capitalized on the momentum from doubles when the 40th ranked Aubone defeated No. 55 Larregola 6-4, 6-2 on court one to give FSU a 2-0 edge. It looked like Florida State would cruise to an easy win but the Hokies roared back to win the next three matches. On court five Virginia Tech's Jacques defeated Cloer 6-4, 7-6(3). The Hokies second victory of the day came at the No. 2 position where Delgado de Robles upset No. 55 Bowles in straight sets 7-6(9), 6-2. The Seminoles gave up the lead on court six when red-shirt freshman Bobby Deye lost to Corace 7-6(8), 6-2. With two matches left on the court FSU had to win both and Chang delivered on court three with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 win over Re. That left Sykut and Graber as the last match on court four. The two split the first two sets with Sykut winning set one 6-3 and Graber winning the second 6-4. In the third and deciding set the player nicknamed "Magic" got an early break, fought off three break points on his own serve and then closed out the match with a 6-3 win.
"It was a big match for him," Hultquist said. "He played the whole third set with the match on the line and he played composed."
Florida State returns to the court on Sunday, March 30 when the Seminoles take on No. 1 Virginia in Charlottesville.

No. 10 Florida State Men's Tennis Loses To Top-Ranked Virginia 6-1.
Senior Sam Chang upsets the fifth-ranked player in the country to provide lone bright-spot for Seminoles.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The No. 10 Florida State men's tennis team was no match for the No. 1 ranked team in the country Virginia (18-0, 7-0) on Sunday afternoon as the Seminoles were defeated by the Cavaliers 6-1.
"They're a great team and they have all the makings of a team that can make a run at the team title in the NCAA Tournament," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "I thought we played hard, but we aren't quite at that level yet."
FSU's (13-4, 5-2) lone victory on the day come from senior Sam Chang. Chang upset the No. 5 ranked player in the country Virginia's Dominic Inglot 7-6, 6-4. With his victory the Young-Ming, Taiwan native remained undefeated in ACC play at 6-0.
"I think Sam [Chang] certainly is playing good tennis at this time," Hultquist said. "He's strung together some victories and I thought we had some other guys play well too."
Freshman Clint Bowles was Virginia's first victim in singles. The No. 58 ranked player in the country was defeated by No. 28 ranked Treat Huey at the No. 2 position 6-2, 6-3. On court four junior Maciek Sykut lost to No. 97 Sanam Singh 6-1, 6-2. The Cavs clinched the match on court six when Brad Angelinos defeated sophomore Brad Mixson in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. On court five junior Chris Cloer was beaten by the UVA's Michael Shabaz 6-4, 6-4 and on court one, No. 40 sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone lost a tough straight sets match to the top-ranked player in the nation the Cavaliers Somdev Devvarman 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles action FSU was swept by the Cavs. On court two Chang and Sykut were defeated by Inglot and Shabaz 8-1. Virginia sealed the point on court one when the No. 1 team of Devvarman and Huey defeated 27th ranked Aubone and Bowles 8-5. UVA completed the sweep on court three when Singh and Barrack defeated junior Drew Bailey and Mixson in a tiebreaker 7-6(6).
Florida State returns to the court at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Friday, April 4 as the Seminoles host No. 30 Wake Forest.

No. 9 Florida State Men's Tennis Sweeps No. 28 Wake Forest 7-0.
Senior Sam Chang clinches match with his eighth straight victory, Wake Forest pulls three matches off the court after FSU goes up 4-0.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Florida State men's tennis team won a crucial ACC match on Friday evening defeating No. 28-ranked Wake Forest 7-0 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The match ended with some controversy when Demon Deacon head coach Jeff Zinn pulled his last three players off their courts after the Seminoles clinched the match.
"I thought it was a good battle, the level of play was really high," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "It was a tough match and beating them gives us the tiebreaker advantage in the conference."
"I think this match was huge because it helps with our seeding in the ACC tournament," senior Sam Chang said. "Hopefully we can keep winning our other matches and get a good seed for the tournament."
The match started out in dramatic fashion during doubles with the match being decided on court three after Florida State (15-4, 6-2) and Wake Forest (16-6, 6-2) split the first two doubles matches. Chang and junior Maciek Sykut dominated on court two defeating sophomore Brasseaux and Carlos Salmon 8-1. The Demon Deacons knotted the score on court one when the 11th ranked team of Cory Parr and Steve Forman defeated 16th ranked sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone and freshman Clint Bowles 8-5. That left junior Drew Bailey and sophomore Brad Mixson on the court against Mariusz Adamski and Jason Morgenstern of Wake Forest. The match went to a tiebreaker at 8-8 and the Demon Deacons had three match points, but the Seminole duo of Bailey and Mixson were able to fight all three points off and finally won the match on their only match point of the tiebreaker 11-9.
"I think we were a little lucky to win the doubles," Hultquist said. "We were down multiple match points and I think winning an emotional doubles point was important for us."
Up 1-0 the Seminoles carried that momentum into singles play where junior Chris Cloer dominated his match on court six defeating Brasseaux 6-2, 6-2 to give the Garnet and Gold a 2-0 lead. The victory for Cloer snapped a seven match losing streak and earned the junior his first victory since injuring his ankle in February.
"Having Chris Cloer win a big one was big," Hultquist said. "Coming off that injury and being the first guy off the court was important."
It would be awhile before FSU would win its next point. The 29th ranked Aubone was taken to three sets by No. 86 Forman on court one. Aubone broke Forman at 5-4 in the third set to take the victory 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to give the Seminoles a 3-0 lead. The match clincher came on court three when No. 71-ranked Chang came from behind to defeat Adamski in three sets. Chang showed a lot of frustration in losing the first set 6-3. But the Young-Ming, Taiwan native was able to rally and win the final two sets 6-4, 6-1 to win his eighth straight match and stay undefeated in the ACC.
"I had something going on in my mind that wasn't allowing me to function early in the match," Chang said. "Once I cooled down I played better and I'm happy that I pulled it out for the team."
Once Florida State had a 4-0 lead, the Wake Forest coach pulled the rest of his players off the court with matches still in progress. Because it was not a decision made by both coaches, Wake Forest forfeited the last three matches to give FSU a 7-0 victory.
Next up for Florida State is a Sunday showdown against No. 44 North Carolina St. at 12:00 p.m.

No. 9 Florida State Men's Tennis Defeats Wolfpack 5-2.
Seminoles one win away from clinching a first round bye in the 2008 ACC Tournament.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No.9 ranked Florida State men's tennis team defeated No. 44 North Carolina St. 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The win puts the Seminoles one victory away from clinching a first round bye in the 2008 ACC Tournament.
"I think having a bye is really important when you play multiple days," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "I think we are one of the best three teams and it is an advantage when you don't have to play that first day."
The Seminoles (16-4, 7-2) took the momentum from the Wolfpack (11-11, 4-5) early by winning a hard fought doubles match. FSU lost the first doubles match on court two when senior Sam Chang and junior Maciek Sykut lost to James Mcgee and Christian Welte 8-2. The Garnet and Gold stormed right back on court three as junior Drew Bailey and sophomore Brad Mixson defeated N.C. State's David Chermack and Derek Stephens 8-3. That left the 16th-ranked duo in the country sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone and freshman Clint Bowles on court one against No. 9-ranked Nick Cavaday and Jay Weinacker of North Carolina St. The teams would fight to a deciding tiebreaker where the Seminole tandem of Aubone and Bowles won the last three points of the tiebreak to come out victorious 9-8(5).
"We've won a lot of matches in doubles with a tiebreak," Hultquist said. "We work on doubles a lot and I think you're seeing that coming through. I think that was a big momentum boost."
In singles, the Seminoles won three quick points in the span of five minutes. The first match off the court was on court No. 5 where Mixson defeated Stephens in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. FSU took a 3-0 lead after No. 29 Aubone defeated No. 63 McGee 6-3, 6-2. The match clinching point came on court six as junior Chris Cloer beat Chermack 6-1, 7-6(5) to give FSU a 4-0 lead and victory.
"The match could have gone on a lot longer if Chris [Cloer] didn't clinch the match in that second set tiebreaker," Hultquist said. "If he loses that, the match would have dragged on and the outcome would have been in doubt so it was big for him to close it out."
On court three, No. 71 Chang saw his eight match winning streak come to an end against Weinacker as the senior lost in straight sets 6-2, 7-6(3). On court two, No. 65 Bowles lost in three sets to Cavaday 6-7(1), 6-2, 10-6. Florida State won its fifth and final point on court four when Sykut outlasted Welte in three sets 7-6(3), 4-6, 11-9.
The Seminoles will finish the ACC regular season on road as FSU travels to Maryland on Friday, April 11 and Boston College on Saturday, April 12.

No. 12 Florida State Men's Tennis Dominates No. 58 Maryland 5-2 To Clinch Top Three Finish In ACC.
Seminoles clinch a top three finish while senior Sam Chang earns his 150th career victory at FSU.
COLLEGE PARK, MD - The No. 12 ranked Florida State men's tennis team defeated No. 58 Maryland 5-2 on Friday afternoon to clinch no worse than third-place in the ACC.
"I thought Maryland played a great match today," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "It was good for us to come back after facing some early adversity."
For one of the few times this season the Seminoles lost the doubles point to the Terrapins. All three matches went down to the wire beginning with the contest on court two where FSU's senior Sam Chang and junior Maciek Sykut defeated Michael Coleman and Nickolai Nielsen of Maryland 8-6. The win gave Chang his 150th career victory as a Seminole. Maryland came back on court one as the number eight ranked duo in the country Andrew Orban and Boris Fetbroyt defeated the Seminoles No. 16 ranked pair of sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone and freshman Clint Bowles in a tiebreaker 9-8(6). The Terps were able to finish of the Seminoles on court three where David Kwon and Amit Inbar outlasted junior Drew Bailey and sophomore Brad Mixson 9-7.
"They took doubles from us in dramatic fashion," Hultquist said. "We had several match points to win the doubles, but they were able to take the point from us."
Down 1-0 the Garnet and Gold needed a good start to singles and got it from the top of their lineup. No. 65 Bowles dominated Kwon at the No. 2 position 6-1, 6-0 to tie the match at one. No. 71 Chang then used the momentum from his doubles victory to take out Orban on court three. Orban had to retire from the match four games into the third set to give Chang victory 151, 6-0, 4-6, 4-0.
"That puts him in unique company," Hultquist said of Chang. "He played very good and showed good leadership today to beat a good player."
With a 2-1 No. 29-ranked Aubone put Florida State one win away from victory when he defeated No. 79 Inbar in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Maryland narrowed the gap to 3-2 on court five when Nielsen beat Mixson in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. The Garnet and Gold were able to clinch the match on court four as Sykut won a tough first set tiebreak against Fetbroyt 7-6(5) and then cruised to a 6-1 second set victory giving FSU the win. The Seminoles finished off Maryland on court six with junior Chris Cloer earning a three set victory over Coleman 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Florida State will have a quick turnaround as the team will be back on the courts Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. against Boston College. The match has been moved indoors because of the threat of inclement weather.
"It's a quick turnaround and we'll be playing indoors," Hultquist said. "It will be important for us to stay focused because Boston College is playing much better tennis."

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL - The No. 10 Florida State men's tennis team advanced to the semifinals at the 2008 ACC Tournament Friday afternoon after defeating the No. 39-ranked Blue Devils 4-0 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
"I thought it was a good day for us," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said."The score wasn't indicative of how close the match really was, but we were fortunate enough to win three matches convincingly."
"ACC's is one of the biggest times of year for us," freshman Clint Bowles said. "We were really played well and we got the job done."
The Seminoles (19-4, 10-2) came out strong in doubles taking two matches from Duke (9-13, 6-6). FSU started the ball rolling on court one as the 15th ranked duo of sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone and freshman Clint Bowles defeated David Goulet and Christopher Price of Duke 8-5. The Seminoles were able to clinch the point on court three when junior Drew Bailey and sophomore Brad Mixson broke the Blue Devil's Alex Stone and Dylan Arnould at 7-6 to win 8-6.
"We were in a little bit of trouble to start doubles," Hultquist said. "I was really pleased for us to get that point."
"J.Y. [Aubone] and I were able to get off the court first and support the other guys," Bowles said. "I played well today and it felt good."
In singles FSU got dominating performances from Bowles, Aubone and Mixson to give FSU a 4-0 victory. The 75th ranked Bowles, who was named to the All-ACC team on Thursday dominated on court three defeating Duke's Kiril Dimitrove 6-2, 6-2. "We had a battle with them the first time," Hultquist said. "I expect Miami to be a very difficult match. Both teams know each other very well so there will be no surprises."

Aubone Upsets No. 3 Ranked Player In The Country But Seminoles Fall 4-3 To No. 25 Miami.
Seminoles fail to close out two matches as Hurricanes upset FSU in the semifinals of the 2008 ACC Tournament.
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL - The No. 10 Florida State men's tennis team lost a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to No. 25 Miami in the semifinals of the 2008 ACC Tournament Saturday Afternoon at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone had the biggest win in his career upsetting third-ranked Daniel Vallverdu 7-6(7), 2-6, 6-4.
"We lost 4-3, but we did have match points on two of the matches that we lost," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "That just shows you how competitive and hard fought it was."
Florida State (19-5, 10-3) put themselves in an early 1-0 hole after losing the doubles point to Miami (16-6, 9-4). On court one the 15th-ranked duo of Aubone and Bowles lost 8-6 to No. 7 Vallverdu and Carl Sundberg. The Hurricanes clinched the point minutes later on court two as senior Sam Chang and junior Maciek Sykut lost to Vivek Subramanian and David Rosenfeld 8-5.
"I thought this would have been a different match if we would have won doubles," Hultquist said. "They just outplayed us in that area this afternoon."
FSU got off to a strong start in singles as Bowles and junior Chris Cloer raced out to a pair of straight set wins. On court three, the 75th-ranked Bowles defeated Rosenfeld 7-6(1), 6-2 and Cloer beat J.C. Whitner 6-3, 7-5 less than a minute later.
With the Seminoles up 2-1 Sykut was defeated on court four by Sundberg in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to tie the match at two. The Garnet and Gold looked like they would go up 3-2 on court five when sophomore Brad Mixson went up 6-3 and 5-0 in a second set tiebreaker against the Hurricanes Keith Crowley, but Crowley won nine out of the last 11 points to take the second set. Crowley then won the third set easily 6-0 to give Miami a 3-0 lead.
"We won four first sets, to put ourselves in good position," Hultquist said. "But their guy at number five played awfully good because Brad had a couple of match points to close it out."
With only two matches left on the court Aubone supplied the dramatics for Florida State. Down 4-3 in the third set to Vallverdu, 19th-ranked Aubone won three straight games to upset Miami's No. 1 player 7-6(7), 2-6, 6-4 to knot the match at three.
"That was a big win for Jean-Yves [Aubone] today over a top five player," Hultquist said. "He played with a lot of heart and came back in that match."
That left Chang and Subramanian on court two to decide the match. The two split the first two sets 7-6(4), 3-6. In the third set the 81st-ranked Chang went up 5-2 and had a match point on Subramanian, but the senior battled back and went up 6-5 on Chang. Chang faced four match points and finally lost the match on Subramanian's fifth break opportunity to clinch the match for Miami with a 7-5 third-set win.
Florida State returns to the court on Saturday, April 26 for senior day at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center against No. 35 Notre Dame.

No. 13 Florida State Men's Tennis Lose Tight 4-3 Decision To No. 31 Notre Dame.
Seminoles play without top player Jean-Yves Aubone and sit through a two hour rain delay before falling to the Fighting Irish.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - No. 13 Florida State men's tennis' bid to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament took a significant hit on Saturday when the Seminoles lost to No. 31 Notre Dame 4-3. The Seminoles (19-6, 10-3) played without top player Jean-Yves Aubone who came down with an illness.
"I think that Notre Dame out-competed us and fought harder," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "We had a little bit of adversity, but their guys up and down the lineup did better than we did."
The Seminoles dropped two out of three doubles' matches to fall into an early 1-0 hole to the Fighting Irish (16-10, 4-0). On court two the team of Santiago Montoya and Andrew Roth defeated junior Drew Bailey and sophomore Brad Mixson 9-7. The Irish clinched the point on court one when senior Sam Chang and junior Maciek Sykut were defeated by Brett Helgeson and Sheeva Parbhu of Notre Dame 8-6. On court three freshman Clint Bowles teamed with junior Chris Cloer for the first time this season to defeated Stephan Havens and Tyler Davis 9-8(5).
"We were up breaks early on courts one and three," Hultquist said. "I think getting the doubles point would have changed the match around a little bit."
Cloer gave FSU some early momentum on court five, dominating David Anderson 6-0, 6-1 to knot the match at one. However, Notre Dame came right back after a two hour rain delay to take a 2-1 lead on court four where Havens defeated Mixson in straight sets 7-5, 6-2. Notre Dame went up 3-1 on court one when the 45th-ranked Helgeson defeated 73rd-ranked Bowles 6-1, 7-6(5).
Florida State bounced back to win the next two matches. On court three Sykut beat Roth in straight sets 7-6(6), 6-2 and on court two 90th-ranked Sam Chang won his last home match of his career defeated 100th-ranked Parbhu 6-4, 7-6(3).
"I was proud of the way we came back after the rain delay and competed," Hultquist said. "It was just a little bit too late."
That left Bailey on court six for the deciding match as he went to three sets with the Fighting Irish's Daniel Stahl. The competitors split the first two sets 6-2, 3-6 and Stahl was able to win the third set easily 6-1 to clinch the match for Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish have now beaten the Seminoles five consecutive times.
Before singles play FSU honored seniors Chang and Jason Hood for their years of commitment to the team.
Next up for Florida State will be the NCAA Tournament. The field of 64 will be announced on Tuesday, April 29.

No. 14 Florida State Men's Tennis Start NCAA Tournament With 4-0 Victory Against Samford.
The Seminoles' duo of Jean-Yves Aubone and Clint Bowles tie team record for doubles' wins in a single season against Bulldogs.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No. 14 ranked Florida State men's tennis team defeated Samford 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, May 10 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
"Early on I thought that they [Samford] were competing really well," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "I think our shot making and our conditioning paid of a little bit."
The Seminoles (20-6, 10-3) started strong winning two doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. The No. 15-ranked duo of sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone and freshman Clint Bowles defeated Hank Grant and Sam Huffman 8-3 on court number one. The win tied the duo with Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhof on the single season double's victories list with 27. On court three junior Drew Bailey and sophomore Brad Mixson beat the Bulldogs Renan Silveira and Kelvin DeWet 8-5 to clinch the point. Bailey and Mixson won the last four games of the set to get the victory.
"They [Aubone and Bowles] have been pretty good all year," Hultquist said. "They make a lot of balls, they volley very well and they make it difficult to get the ball back."
In singles, the Seminoles got a pair of 6-1, 6-1 victories to take a quick 3-0 lead. On court four, junior Maciek Sykut defeated Samford's Brian Dushock and minutes later junior Chris Cloer followed suit with his win against Oliver Reynolds.
"It was big because that doesn't always happen with me," Sykut said. "I wanted to set that tone for the rest of the team and get off the courts quickly."
Florida State finished off the match on court number two as the 85th-ranked Bowles defeated Samford's Jordan Delass 7-5, 6-2 to clinch victory for the Garnet and Gold.
"I was just trying to focus on what was happening on my court," Bowles said. "There were several matches close to finishing, but I didn't let that distract me, I just did my thing."
The Seminoles will face the winner of the South Alabama versus Alabama match at 1:00 p.m.

No. 14 Florida State Men's Tennis Advances To Round Of 16 With 4-3 Win Over No. 62 South Alabama.
Seminole freshman Clint Bowles clinches match as FSU advances to the final site for the second time in the history of the program.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The 14th-ranked Florida State men's tennis team swarmed teammate Clint Bowles after the freshman clinched the Seminoles second round victory against No. 62 South Alabama Sunday, May 11 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The 4-3 win sent FSU to the round of 16 for the second time in the programs' history.
"Two years in a row we were right there to get to the final site," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "I think right now we are at the stage of our program where we feel that we are top 10 in the country and I feel like something's missing if we don't make it to the final site."
Things started well for the Seminoles (21-6, 10) in doubles as they swept the Jaguars in two matches. On court three the team of junior Drew Bailey and sophomore Brad Mixson easily dispatched of USA's Aaron Krisan and Michael O'Brien 8-1 with the duo winning the last seven games. FSU finished doubles out on court two when senior Sam Chang and junior Maciek Sykut beat Robert Hodel and Marek Sramek 8-5.
It looked like it was going to be an easy day for Florida State after the team jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in singles. Mixson closed out O'Brien on court six 6-1, 6-0 winning the last 11 games of the match and on court five junior Chris Cloer defeated Krisan 6-2, 6-1 to give the Seminoles the big lead.
"For the whole season the bottom of our lineup has been really reliable," Cloer said. "When you go in with that mindset and have confidence in those players it certainly helps."
However, South Alabama roared back to win three consecutive matches. On court one 34th-ranked Jack Baker upset No. 13 sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone 6-2, 6-4 for the Jaguars first point of the match. On court three, No. 107 Sramek defeated the 92nd-ranked Chang 7-5, 6-3 and on court four R.J. Nagel was victorious against Sykut 6-3, 6-4 to knot that match at three.
"We talk about it all the time, but it is hard not to watch the other courts," Hultquist said. "That happened a little bit to us today with Jean-Yves [Aubone] and Sam [Chang]."
The match came down to No. 85 Bowles and Hodel on court number two. Bowles won the first set 7-5 and was up 5-2 in the second, but Hodel was able to save three match points and win the last five games of the second set to even the match with a 7-5 victory. In the third set, Bowles broke Hodel to start things off and he never looked back cruising to a 6-1 victory which set off a raucous celebration on the court.
"He [Hodel] played really well," Bowles said. "I just tried to keep my composure and stay positive. I just focused and played one point at a time."
"Even though he's a freshman, Clint [Bowles] can come through in the clutch," Hultquist said. "I felt like he wasn't going to panic and he made two good adjustments in the third set. Champions want it on their racket."
Florida State advanced to the round of 16 in 2005 for the first time in program history. Now the Seminoles will return and hope to improve upon their quarterfinal performance three years ago. FSU will travel to Tulsa, Okla. to compete at the NCAA Championships finals site and play its first match on Friday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m.

Season Comes To An End For No. 14 Florida State Men's Tennis With 4-0 Loss To No. 3 UCLA.
Seminoles season ends in the round of 16 after coming up short against the Bruins.
TULSA, OK - The 14th-ranked Florida State men's tennis team lost its round of 16 match at the 2008 NCAA Championships to No. 3 UCLA 4-0 Friday, May 16 in Tulsa Okla. The loss ended the Seminoles (21-7, 10-3) season.
"UCLA is a great team, they are very talented," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "I thought we competed very well, but they showed why they are one of the favorites to win it all."
Florida State started the match quickly in doubles by jumping out to big leads on courts one and three. Junior Drew Bailey and sophomore Brad Mixson held their lead on court three defeating the Bruins Jeremy Drean and Michael Look 8-5. UCLA tied the doubles at one with Mathieu Dehaine and Holden Seguso's 8-4 victory over senior Sam Chang and junior Maciek Sykut. On court one, the 15th-ranked duo of sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone and freshman Clint Bowles went up 7-2 on UCLA's 52nd-ranked pair of Nick Meister and Harel Srugo. However, the Bruins stunned FSU by rallying to win the final seven games of the set to win the doubles point with a 9-7 win. "I thought that the doubles was the key to the match," Hultquist said. "We had the momentum in the doubles but then they came back."
In singles, again the Seminoles started quickly, but UCLA quickly countered to win five out of six first sets. The Bruins got their second point on court four when Look beat Sykut 6-3, 6-2. UCLA's second singles victory came on court three as the 40th-ranked Dehaine defeated the 92nd-ranked Chang in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. The Bruins clinched the match on court six when Meister defeated Mixson 6-4, 6-3.
"We were up early in singles, but then they came back and won five first sets," Hultquist said. "That was the key to the match, the momentum swings that they were able to turn at crucial times."
With the team season done, FSU will now turn its attention to the individual championships that begin Wednesday, May 21. Aubone will compete in both the singles and doubles while Bowles will be his partner in doubles.

Aubone Wins Three-Set Thriller To Advance To Second Round Of NCAA Singles Tournament.
Seminoles Jean-Yves Aubone escapes upset with 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory on a windy day in Tulsa, Okla.
May 21, 2008
TULSA, OK - On a day when the wind wreaked havoc on the players' serves, Florida State sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone survived a first-round scare from Mississippi State's Phillipe Frayssinoux on Wednesday, May 21, to advance to the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
"It was pretty tough conditions out there today," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "It was very windy and he [Aubone] was really tough mentally and overcame some tough breaks to win the match."
"The first round of a tournament is always hard and it was weird playing without the team around me," Aubone said. "It feels good to get this first win out of the way and now I can focus on the rest of the tournament."
The 13th-ranked Aubone needed three sets to dispatch of No. 49 Frayssinoux 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. In the first set, both players had difficulty holding their serve. Aubone went up a break early, but Frayssinoux came back to knot the set at 2-2. However, the All-American from Miami, Fla. stormed back to win four of the next five games to take the first set 6-3.
"The first set took a very long time," Hultquist said. "It was back-and-forth with a lot of long games and I was really proud of the way he overcame it all."
In the second set, Aubone had three break points at 4-3, but Frayssinoux rallied to win the next six games to tie the set at 4-4. Both players traded breaks and Frayssinoux was able to go up 6-5 after a second break and held on the take the second set 7-5.
"I thought Frayssinoux played really well," Hultquist said. "He changed it up and played aggressively to take the set."
The Seminole sophomore put the pressure on early in the third set by breaking Frayssinoux three consecutive times to take a 5-1 lead and cruised to a 6-3, match-clinching win. Aubone will play Ohio State's 16th-ranked Brian Koniecko who defeated Mississppi's Robbye Poole in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday morning.
"I thought he played a little bit more aggressive in the third set," Hultquist said. "His serving percentage went up in the third set and that was probably the key to getting off to a good start there."
"I played better on his service games a lot of the times," Aubone said. "I was lucky to get the three breaks in a row in the third and get out with a win."
Aubone and freshman Clint Bowles will also begin doubles competition tomorrow afternoon against Rice's Ralph Knupfer and Christoph Muller.
Seminole Jean-Yves Aubone ends season with loss to 16th-ranked Bryan Koniecko in Tulsa, Okla.
May 22, 2008
TULSA, OK - Florida State sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone's season came to an end in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The No. 13-ranked player in the country lost a three-set heartbreaker to Ohio State's 16th-ranked Bryan Koniecko 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"It was a tough match today, he played well and it could have gone either way," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "He played a good a match against a good player and fought all the way to the end."
The sophomore All-American dominated the first set in impressive fashion winning 6-1. The two competitors played a lot of long hard points, but in the end it was Aubone who came out on top on most of them.
"He [Aubone] came out really strong," Hultquist said. "They played some long points and he won those points to get the early advantage."
In the second set, Koniecko broke Aubone early and while he was able to fight back, in the end it was the Buckeye who took the second 6-3. The third set was a tight battle that saw Koniecko get the only break of the set at 1-1. That was all he needed, as Aubone could not recover and was eliminated from the tournament 6-4.
"He got down an early break in the second and fought back, he had a few chances but Koniecko really elevated his game," Hultquist said. "Jean-Yves played a good third set, but he had a few unforced errors in the game he was broken and Koniecko once again played really well to close it out."
Aubone ends his dual-match season with an 18-8 record with almost all of his matches being played at the No. 1 position. He was named ACC Player of the Week once and he was a member of the All-ACC team. His strong season also earned the Miami, Fla. native the Mideast Region Player to Watch award.
"He had a great year in singles, and he came to play every single match," Hultquist said. "He made a huge jump from last year and became one of the best players in the country."

The 15th-ranked pair survived the three hour forty five minute match and not breaking the Owls duo for the entire match.
"It was an attitude match and we just came away with it," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "Both of them conveyed being winners and they never give up until the final point is over."
The Seminole duo lost the first set 6-4, but came back to win the next two sets in a pair of tiebreakers. In set two, Aubone and Bowles fought back to stay alive and eventually won 7-6(3) to send the match into a third-set.
