Huggins Breaks School Record to Help FSU Down Georgia Tech.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Senior Maddy Huggins broke a school record to help the Florida State swimming and diving team defeat ACC foe Georgia Tech on Saturday at the Morcom Aquatics Center.
The Seminole women won nine of 16 events and beat the Yellow Jackets 162-138 to improve to 3-0 on the young season. FSU posted one 1-2-3-4 finish and two 1-2 finishes. In the men's team competition, Georgia Tech edged out Florida State, 174.5-125.5, as FSU won five events while making its season debut.
Huggins was joined by fifth-year Yordan Yanchev and seniors Edith Jernstedt and Kayleigh Clark as Seminoles with multiple individual wins on Saturday.
"I am really excited that the women overturned last year's defeat to earn the win today," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "We talked about how that felt, and we came out and executed. We had some newcomers step up and that was great for us.
"Obviously as a head coach when you lose one and win the other it's tough. The men slipped up in a couple spots. Georgia Tech swam great today, and I thought we were really good too. The results show that both teams swam really fast, and in the end, we just didn't get it done on the men's side. It's kind of a strange feeling to be super happy about one and really disappointed about the other, but congrats to Georgia Tech."
Huggins' school record in the 200-yard breaststroke was part of her day that featured two individual wins and a relay victory. The senior won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:07.98, 0.59 seconds faster than the previous record holder, Nina Kucheran's 2:08.57 set in 2021.
The senior's day began with a 100 breaststroke win in 59.51, a victory by more than 1.50 seconds. Huggins also was second in the 200 individual medley and helped FSU to a 200 medley relay win.
Jernstedt won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:57.64 and the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:59.71. Her 200 butterfly victory was by more than two seconds.
Juniors Julia Brzozowski and Sarah Evans also were important pieces of the Seminoles' win today with individual wins. Brzozowski took a convincing win in the 1000 freestyle, victorious by almost ten seconds with a time of 10:03.85. Evans also posted a first-place showing in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.01.
The divers came out with impressive performances in both the 1- and 3-meter events. Clark and freshman Evelyn Hall finished first and second in the 1-meter with scores of 306.00 and 264.45, respectively. Things only got better when the women moved on to the 3-meter, as they swept top four places against the Yellow Jackets. Once again, Clark took the lead with a score of 306.45.
FSU's women began the day with a 200 medley relay win in 1:37.31. A win by almost two seconds was achieved by Evans, Huggins, graduate student Jenny Halden and senior Gloria Muzito.
The Seminole men displayed several notable performances, particularly in the relays. To begin their day, fifth-year Mason Herbet, juniors Tommaso Baravelli and Sam Bork and senior Jokubas Keblys won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:26.17. The foursome edged Georgia Tech by 0.56 seconds. Bork, Herbet, fifth-year Max Wilson and Keblys closed the day as they begun it, with a victory in the 200 freestyle of 1:19.30. That came by a 0.47-second margin.
Yanchev earned two victories in his season debut, in the 100 and 200 freestyle. The fifth-year won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:35.93, and the 100 freestyle with a personal best time of 43.89.
Freshman Logan Robinson picked up his first collegiate win in the 100 butterfly with a time of 47.17. He was a close runner up in the 200 butterfly as well, with a time of 1:47.07 that was just 0.17 seconds behind the first finisher.

Huggins Matches School Record vs. No. 7/10 UGA.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 22/RV Florida State swimming and diving team fell to No. 7/10 Georgia on Saturday at the Morcom Aquatic Center.
Senior Maddy Huggins tied her own school record in the 200 yard breaststroke and won three events, two individual and one relay. Graduate student Samantha Vear earned a pair of individual victories with a sweep of the diving events as FSU totaled seven wins on Saturday.
On a pleasant and sun-soaked day that marked the second weekend of competition in 2024-25, the Seminole faced their first ranked opponent of the year. The RV Florida State women (3-1) suffered their first loss of the season, as they were edged by No. 10 Georgia, 183.5-116.5. The No. 22 FSU men (0-2) lost to No. 7 UGA 218-81.
"I thought we had a great day, and obviously we ran into a really good program that swam fast and deserved to win," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "We had some great individual performances again. Maddy Huggins tied the school record, and winning that first relay on the women's side was awesome. We have a lot to be really proud of. A few athletes were out with injuries, and we missed them today, but again, overall, a good day and I like the direction we're headed."
One week after she broke the FSU record, Huggins matched it on Saturday as part of another impressive day for the senior. Huggins won the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.98 to tie her week-old record. Earlier in the day, she posted a victory by more than three seconds in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.04.
Huggins' day began with a 200 medley relay win, as she and junior Sarah Evans, graduate student Jenny Halden and senior Gloria Muzito won in 1:37.62. The foursome touched the wall 0.34 seconds ahead of the runners-up from Georgia to open the meet.
Vear won both diving events while making her season debut. First was a win on 1-meter to lead a sweep of the top three places by Florida State, followed by a 3-meter victory to pace a 1-2 finish for FSU. Vear's 1-meter win came with a mark of 328.40 and her 3-meter win was with a score of 345.40. Redshirt junior Kayleigh Clark was second in both diving events, with a 306.65 on 3-meter and a 283.55 on 1-meter.
Junior Tommaso Baravelli won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:57.48, as he edged out a Bulldog finisher for the victory by 0.16 seconds. Baravelli's day also included a second-place showing in the 100 breaststroke in 54.28.
Fellow junior Sam Bork earned a win in the 50 freestyle. He touched the wall in 20.04 for his first victory of the season.
Along with their wins in the 200 medley relay, Evans and Halden also notched runner-up finishes individually. Evans was second in the 100 backstroke in 54.63 and Halden swam the 100 butterfly in 54.14 to take second.
Senior Edith Jernstedt and freshman Logan Robinson also placed second in individual events on Saturday, Jernstedt in the 200 butterfly in 1:57.20 and Robinson in the 100 butterfly in 47.13.

FSU Wins Four, Posts Two Top-10 Times.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Freshman Logan Robinson entered the record books with the third-fastest time in team history as the No. 22/RV Florida State swimming and diving team faced a pair of ranked opponents in No. 13/19 LSU and No. 20/RV Alabama on Friday afternoon in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Robinson was one of four Seminoles to post a victory on Friday, along with graduate student Samantha Vear, junior Tommaso Baravelli and fellow freshman Mathias Christensen. Robinson also notched a runner-up finish, while Christensen and Vear's days also included third-place showings at Alabama's Don Gambril Olympic Pool in the Alabama Aquatic Center.
Senior Maddy Huggins was second in three events, two of them individually, to continue her strong start to the season. Senior Edith Jernstedt notched a trio of third-place finishes.
Christensen joined Robinson with top-10 times in school history on Friday. Robinson etched his name at No. 3 in the 200 yard butterfly, while Christensen's mark, at No. 9 in the record books, came in the 200 breaststroke.
"We had some great performances today," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "I am really excited that the women got the NCAA cut in the 200 medley relay. I am really happy with how we are performing."
In the team's first road meet of the season, FSU's No. 22-ranked men lost to No. 19 LSU 161.5-138.5 and to No. 20 Alabama 191-109. Florida State's women lost to Alabama 196.5-103.5 and to No. 13 LSU 201-99. Additionally, Alabama topped LSU, 167-133 in the men's competition and 157.5-142.5 in the women's event.
Robinson won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:42.65. The fastest time by a Seminole since 2019 puts the first-year collegian at No. 3 in school history in the event, and he is just one of three swimmers to break the 1:43.00 mark. Robinson's win on Friday came by 0.43 seconds over the runner-up from Alabama. Additionally, Robinson was second in the 100 butterfly in 46.95.
Christensen won the 200 individual medley and entered the record books in the 200 breaststroke. His 200 IM victory came in 1:45.86, winning by 0.26 seconds in the final individual event of the day. Christensen was third in the 200 breast in 1:57.09, which is ninth-fastest in FSU history.
Baravelli won the 200 breaststroke in 1:56.62. In a tight finish, he touched the wall just 0.12 seconds ahead of LSU's second-place swimmer to help the Seminoles finish first and third.
On the 3-meter springboard, Vear earned her third win in four events in her two meets this season. Friday's victory came with a score of 343.00 points, and she was more than 45 points ahead of LSU's second-place diver. Vear began her day with a third-place finish on 1-meter with a score of 283.10.
The day began as the women's 200 medley relay placed second with an NCAA A qualifying mark. Freshman Alice Velden, Huggins, graduate student Jenny Halden and senior Gloria Muzito finished in 1:36.05.
Huggins was second in a pair of events. First was the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 59.55, followed by the 200 breaststroke in 2:09.02.

Two School Records Fall to Begin Georgia Tech Invite.
November 22, 2024
ATLANTA, Ga. - The No. 24/RV Florida State swimming and diving team broke two school records to open the weekend at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday in Atlanta.
Freshman Logan Robinson set the FSU record in the 200 yard butterfly and the women's 400 medley relay posted the best time in program history as a total of nine top-10 times in the record books were achieved on Friday. The Seminoles notched nine top-three finishes, with three victories, and a number of NCAA standard marks were attained.
The three-day meet at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center features six top-25 teams. Along with No. 19 Georgia Tech, FSU is taking to the pool against No. 11/17 Michigan and No. 15/18 Auburn.
"This was just an amazing day for us," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "School records, NCAA qualifiers and a relay A cut, this was just everything you would want from a day one. I am really proud of how we competed and I'm excited for the rest of the weekend."
Robinson swam the 200 butterfly in 1:41.50 to break a nine-year old school record in the event. An NCAA B qualifying time, the first-year Seminole topped the previous FSU record of 1:41.66, set by Connor Knight in 2015.
The day ended with a record-setting win in the 400 medley relay. Freshman Alice Velden and seniors Maddy Huggins, Edith Jernstedt and Gloria Muzito finished in 3:31.68, an NCAA B mark. The foursome won the event by 0.07 seconds and sit atop the record books by nearly 0.30 seconds. They bested the previous record of 3:31.96, set in 2022 by a team that included Jernstedt.
The men's 400 medley relay also posted a win to finish the first day of competition with an NCAA A qualifying time. Juniors Max Wilson and Tommaso Baravelli, Robinson and fifth-year Yordan Yanchev finished in 3:04.69, victorious by 0.83 seconds. The time is No. 3 in the Florida State record books and just the fourth ever to be faster than 3:05.00. Wilson and Baravelli were part of the relay squad that set the school record a season ago.
Junior Sam Bork won the 50 freestyle final, just before the 400 medley relays, to help the Seminoles post three consecutive wins to conclude the day. Bork's NCAA B time of 19.18 is No. 4 all-time and the fastest since 2019. The victory came after he entered FSU's top-10 list at No. 10 in the morning's prelims with a time of 19.33.
Florida State placed first and second in the women's 1-meter diving competition. Graduate student Samantha Vear picked up the win with a score of 325.95 in the finals, and redshirt junior Kayleigh Clark was the runner-up with a finals mark of 307.65.
Huggins moved up in the record books twice in the 200 individual medley. She placed second in the finals in 1:56.76, the second-fastest time in program history. The senior began the day at No. 6 and moved up to No. 5 in the prelims before her NCAA B mark in the final put her at No. 2 all-time and second in the race. Jernstedt (1:58.25) also picked up an NCAA B time in the prelims in the event.
The finals got underway with a pair of third-place finishes for the Seminoles in the 200 freestyle relay. The men posted an NCAA B time of 1:16.66, which is fifth-fastest in school history courtesy of Bork, fifth-year Mason Herbert, Wilson and senior Jokubas Keblys. The women touched the wall in 1:29.13, which ranks No. 4 in the record books and the fastest since 2020 thanks to freshman Maryn McDade, grad student Jenny Halden, Jernstedt and Muzito.

No. 21/25 FSU Wins 17 against No. 4/5 UF.
January 31, 2025
OCALA, Fla. - In its final dual meet of the regular season, the No. 21/25 Florida State swimming and diving team won 17 of 32 events against No. 4/5 Florida on Friday afternoon in Ocala, Florida.
Swimming events were held at Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training in Ocala, while 1- and 3-meter diving was contested at UF's O'Connell Center Natatorium in Gainesville. The divers will conclude competition tomorrow on platform.
The Seminole men posted nine victories, with 1-2 finishes in three events. The women claimed eight wins, including both relays, with four 1-2 finishes and a sweep of the top three places in one event.
We had a great day of racing," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "There were some real highlights and proud moments for us. The Gators had a lot of sick athletes, so we raced but did not score the meet. We felt that this gave our athletes the opportunity we wanted, but also respected our opponents' bad luck. We were really happy with what we saw today from our team."
Freshman Michel Arkhangelskiy led the way with three individual wins and a relay victory. His day individually began in the 50 freestyle, where a 19.65 led a 1-2 finish, followed by a personal-best 42.51 in the 100 freestyle. Men's 200 Medley Relay Medal Paves Way to Begin ACC Championships.
February 18, 2025
GREENSBORO, N.C. - A record-breaking, silver-medal-winning 200 medley relay for the No. 18/25 Florida State swimming and diving team was the standout moment of the first day of the ACC Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina on Tuesday.
On the first day of the five-day conference championship meet, FSU set two school records and notched four top-eight podium finishes. The men's 200 medley relay claimed silver and fifth-place showings were earned by senior Samantha Vear and the men's 800 freestyle relay. The women's 200 medley relay joined them on the podium with a sixth-place finish and several divers joined Vear in earning points for the Seminoles.
"It was just an amazing day," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "All four relays were incredible. Obviously, the men nearly winning the whole thing in the 200 medley was special, beating all the original members of the ACC and just getting edged out by Cal. Breaking two school records today was great. I am so proud of these two teams and I'm excited to see what we can do riding this momentum."
The men's 200 medley relay was the ACC runners-up with a school record time thanks to fifth-year Mason Herbet, junior Tommaso Baravelli, freshman Michel Arkhangelskiy and junior Sam Bork. With a finish of 1:21.98, the team also earned an NCAA A cut and bested the previous program record by more than one second.
The record-breaking didn't stop there, as the men crushed the 800 freestyle relay program record by more than five seconds with a time of 6:12.68. Led by fifth-year Yordan Yanchev, junior Utku Kurtdere, sophomore Gustav Olsson and freshman Logan Robinson, the Seminoles notched another NCAA A cut and a fifth-place overall finish in the conference.
In the first event of the day, and one of two individual events on Tuesday, Vear placed fifth overall in the women's 1-meter springboard final with a score of 303.00. Vear improved her score from the morning's prelims by five points.
