Noles Split Dual with Tigers.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 15/RV Florida State swimming and diving teams split its home opener against NR/23 Auburn on Friday at the Morcom Aquatics Center.
FSU (0-1) fell to the Tigers (1-0) in the women's meet, 123-177, while the 15th-ranked FSU men's team (1-0) outlasted Auburn (0-1) 153-147.
"I'm really excited with how we competed today," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "It's great for our guys to get their second win in-a-row over the Tigers and the women were right there and made it close for a while before they pulled away at the end. But overall, we had a great first meet here at home."
The Seminoles set four Morcom Aquatics Center pool records. Mason Herbet was a part of three of those performances that included two individual records in the 100 back and 200 IM.
The men's meet started with the 200 medley relay setting the pool record with a team of Herbet, Izaak Bastian, Max McCusker and Peter Varjasi at 1:25.88. The team took down the mark that was set last season by Herbet, Bastian, Domen Demsar and Varjasi (1:26.85).
Auburn picked up momentum by sweeping the 1000 free and winning the 200 free. Hebert ended the Tiger streak by touching first in the 100 back, lowering his own pool record in the 100 back, at 47.37 (47.43).
The Tigers took first in the 100 breast, but the Seminoles answered with a sweep of the 200 fly, led by Zach Smith (1:48.29) in first, Rush Clark (1:48.80) in second and Brennan Hammond (1:50.31) in third.
FSU added three straight one-two finishes, putting some distance between the Tigers.
Varjasi took the 50 free (20.00) and Kuba Ksiazek (20.43) in second place. On the boards, Joshua Davidson was dominant on 3-meter, winning with a total of 371.70, followed by Jesco Helling (336.15) in second, who edged out Auburn's best diver by just under four points.
"For where we are, we had a good day," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "Josh has been a little big banged up, but he came out today and did a great job for his first meet of the year. I thought all of our guys had a good meet."
Out of the swimming break, Varjasi touched first in the 100 free at 44.09 ahead of McCusker in second (44.83). Herbet added another victory from lane eight, posting a time of 1:46.67.
However, Auburn gained ground, winning the 200 breast before sweeping the 500 free.
The Seminoles answered with another one-two showing, led by McCusker in the 100 fly (47.79) and Clark (48.79) in second.
Davidson added another victory on 1-meter, scoring 355.05, which was almost 30 points of the second place diver, helping FSU take a 14 point lead heading into the final two races.
"Our divers did a heck of a job," Studd added. "They got us some much-needed points."
Herbet added another record in the 200 IM, holding off Auburn's top swimmer from lane one, winning with a time of 1:48.75, but Auburn finished in second, third and fourth place, limiting the damage.
The Tigers won the final 400 free relay, but FSU's second place finish (2:57.43) was enough to seal the win with Varjasi, McCusker, Blake Moran and Ksiazek.
The victory is just the second over the Tigers in program history, as the first was a 180-120 decision at Auburn last season.
The women's team started the meet off with a victory in the 200 medley relay behind Tania Quaglieri, Nina Kucheran, Jenny Halden and Rebecca Moynihan with a time of 1:39.54.
Auburn answered with a sweep of the 1000 and 200 free.
Kucheran stepped up and added a big win in the 100 breast with a time of 1:01.07 and freshman Maddy Huggins took third (1:02.84), just off second place (1:02.84).
Hannah Womer went out for the early lead in the 200 fly and held off the Tigers for the win with a time of 1:59.34, which was just off her personal best swim (1:58.92).
FSU added second and third place finish in the 50 free, led by Moynihan (23.49) in second and Gloria Muzito (23.62) in third.
In diving, FSU posted a much-needed one-two punch on 1-meter, led by Samantha Vear in first place (300.60) ahead of freshman Victoria Cervantes (263.03) in second.
Cervantes would later win 3-meter in her collegiate debut with a score of 296.48.
"Victoria had a great meet," Proctor said. "It's still very early. A lot of our team dove in their first collegiate meet today. We won all four diving events against a pretty good team. Everyone went out there and had fun and when they're smiling and having a good time, it shows in their performances."
Kucheran was dominant in the 200 breast, setting the pool record in the 200 breast at 22:15.58, just getting under the mark that was set by Natalie Pierce (2:12.68) set in 2018.
Auburn secured the meet after winning six of the final eight events.

No. 15/RV Noles Outlast No. 19/NR Georgia Tech.
ATLANTA, Ga. - The No.15/RV Florida State swimming and diving teams defeated ACC foe No. 19/NR Georgia Tech on the road on Saturday at the McAuley Aquatics Center.
Both meets were close contests, as the 15th-ranked men (2-0, 1-0 ACC) edged No. 19 GT 150-148 and the RV women (1-1, 1-0 ACC) prevailed 159-141.
"It's great to get two wins on the road," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "It's always tougher when you travel and we're really excited about how they fought after a really hard week of work.
"It was a team effort from top to bottom," Studd added. "When Georgia Tech won an event, we went two, three, four, which is great."
In the 42 meetings in the series, the two-point win for the men's team was the closest in program history over the Yellow Jackets. FSU won six events on the day, but it was the depth in five races where the Noles placed second, third and fourth that secured the victory.
The men's team started off with a win in the 200 medley relay behind the team of Mason Herbet, Izaak Bastian, Max McCusker and Jakub Ksiazek with a time of 1:27.89.
Georgia Tech won the 1000 free and 200 free but FSU grabbed second, third and fourth place in both races, limiting the Yellow Jackets to gain two points on the Noles in the team scores.
Herbet took gold in the 100 back (47.81) and but Georgia Tech answered with wins in the 100 breast and 200 fly. But a two-three-four showing in the 200 fly, led by Zach Smith in second (1:49.41), followed by Brennan Hammond in third (1:50.41) and Rush Clark in fourth (1:52.65), kept FSU in front.
The sprinters added to the lead by sweeping the 50 free, led by Varjasi in first (20.26), Jakub Ksiazek in second (20.63) and Domen Demsar in third (20.81).
On the boards, the divers picked up a big one-two, dominating finish on 3-meter, led by Jesco Helling in first (360.30) and Darwin Nolasco (341.33) in second.

The women and men established new marks in the 200 medley relay to start the meet.
The team of Tania Quaglieri, Nina Kucheran, Jenny Halden and Rebecca Moynihan turned in a season best of 1:37.00, which is an NCAA consideration time. The squad took down the record set by the FSU team of Maddie Cohen, Ida Hulkko, Leila Johnston and Emma Terebo back in 2018 at 1:38.97.

Vargas, Helling Shine in ACC Final.
February 15, 2022
ATLANTA, Ga. - The No. 21/24 Florida State swimming and diving teams opened competition at the 2022 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships on Tuesday at the McAuley Aquatics Center.
Men's divers David Vargas and Jesco Helling highlighted the evening by competing in their first ACC Championship final, while the men's 800 free relay achieved an NCAA standard.
"It was a great first day for us," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "The men getting the NCAA cut in the relay was big and our ladies had a very strong swim. Two divers in the top eight was also great. We're excited for the rest of the week."
Behind a sophomore and three freshmen, the Seminoles started off the night by placing seventh in the women's 800 free relay behind Phoebe Griffiths, Emily Trieschmann, Sydney Boals and Edith Jernstedt with a time of 7:10.13.
Griffiths led off with a split of 1:47.42, just off the lead. Trieschmann pulled the Noles in front (1:48.69), but Boals extended the lead behind a massive split of 1:45.97, which was five seconds faster than her individual 200 free this season.
"That was a massive split for Syd," Studd added. "She was looking good in practice, and we just had to put her on the relay and she absolutely crushed it."
Jernstedt brought home the heat one win, splitting 1:48.05.
Aziz Ghaffari led off the men's 800 free relay, splitting his personal best in the 200 free at 1:34.52. That performance is now tied for the third-fastest in school history.
David Quirie kept the Noles in a steady third place in heat two, splitting 1:34.26 and Sam Budd clocked 1:36.07 in the third leg to keep FSU in a tight race for second in the heat.
Yordan Yanchev posted a 1:34.10 anchor split, pulling the Noles to a second place finish in heat two, and sixth place showing overall behind a final time of 6:18.95, which is an NCAA consideration time.
Helling and Vargas qualified for their first ACC championship finals in sixth and seventh place respectively out of prelims.
Vargas held a steady fourth place position throughout the round, starting with his best dive of the day, scoring 68.20 on his front 3 1/2 somersault pike. He followed with two more dives about 60 points before adding tallies of 58.50 and 51.00 in his fourth and fifth round dives, holding on to fourth place.
In his final dive, Vargas added 64.50 on his front 2 1/2 somersault twister, but ended up in fifth place after another trailing competitor scored above 80 points on his final dive.
Helling held sixth place throughout the round six, scoring his best dive in the fifth round. His front 3 1/2 somersault pike registered marks of 7.0 and 7.5, for a total of 68.20.
"David and Jesco had a very solid day," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "David has come in and done a great job adjusting and getting ready for the postseason and Jesco has really come into his own. He came in as a freshman last year and had to manage an injury and he just continues to improve. I'm looking forward to seeing what these guys and our ladies can do the rest of the week."
In the women's 1-meter diving prelims, freshman Izzy Gregersen led the Noles on the boards, scoring 218.55 for 30th place.

February 17, 2022
ATLANTA, Ga. - The No. 21/24 Florida State swimming and diving teams were fueled by two podium performances on the third night of the 2022 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships.
The women's 200 medley relay started the night off by winning bronze behind Tania Quaglieri, Nina Kucheran, Jenny Halden and Rebecca Moynihan at 1:35.40.
Mason Herbet, Izaak Bastian, Max McCusker and Peter Varjasi followed by taking bronze in the men's race, touching at 1:23.15.
Both squads established new school records and improved their NCAA seed times after previously earning automatic qualifying standards.
"Those two relays were amazing," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "The ladies smashed the previous record and got the evening off to a great start and the men followed suit. We're excited to see what they can do at NCAAs."
Working out of the final heat, Quaglieri led off with a 24.38 in the 50 back and Kucheran split 26.87 in the breaststroke leg to put the Noles in third. Halden took over in fly (22.43) and Moynihan brought it home in 21.72, securing the bronze over the heat two winners, North Carolina (1:35.58).
The Seminoles shattered the previous record that was set by Maddie McDonald, Ida Hulkko, Leila Johnston and Kertu Alnek at 1:36.28 in 2019.
In the men's event, Herbet led off with a 20.92 split, Bastian (23.55) and McCusker (19.74) followed before Varjasi anchored at 18.94, finishing fourth in the heat, however due to a disqualification, the Seminoles moved up and won bronze.
The Noles lowered their own FSU record, which was set back in November of 2021 at 1:23.57.
Florida State had two swimmers in the bonus heat of the 400 IM, led by Sydney VanOvermeiren in 19th place at 4:17.11. Sydney Boals contributed another personal best swim and placed 20th at 4:19.38.
FSU had three women swim under the 2021 NCAA invited time cut in the 100 fly (52.70), led by Edith Jernstedt, who came on strong to finish 11th at a personal best of 52.46, just ahead of Halden in 13th at 52.70, after she posted a 52.37 in prelims.
In the bonus final, Aryanna Fernandes came from behind, surging off the final wall to take a commanding lead, touching at 52.68 to place 17th. Hannah Womer followed in 24th at 54.01, after posting a 53.99.
"That was a big event for us," Studd said. "Three ladies went under the time that was invited last year. Let's hope it holds and they all qualify."
McCusker came back to win the consolation heat of the 100 fly, using his powerful underwater kicks off the final turn to surpass the field, touching with a personal best of 45.74 for ninth place. His performance now ranks fourth in FSU history.

"We didn't have the best morning, but we made the most of what we had in finals tonight," Studd said. "Tomorrow is probably our best day, and we'll have to be ready to get it done in prelims."
On the boards, the women competed on 3-meter, with Vivian Johnson scoring 12th place points with a total of 270.80.

In the final two rounds, Johnson was strong, but just finished outside of the top eight.
"Vivian was incredible today," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "This is one of the deepest springboard fields I've seen at this meet and
for her to be that competitive and just miss the final with that list was awesome. She just ran out of spices on taco night."
