15 Noles Capture All-American Honors. April 8, 2020 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America announced
its All-America award winners on Wednesday. Due to the cancellation of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, the CSCAA Board adjusted the selection criteria for each Division. Five women and
10 from the 14th-ranked men's team were selected from Florida State, covering 16 individual events and four relays. All relays achieving "A" time standards, in addition to those that qualified for
individual events for the NCAA Championships were awarded the honor. "I am very proud of our team for what they did this year," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "We were really excited to watch our
Noles perform at NCAAs. Having those seniors lose their last NCAAs was tough, but the team was able to put things into perspective, and they understand this is bigger than themselves. That is what I
am most proud of. We are very excited to have our 15 student-athletes recognized with these honors." The 2020 ACC Diver of the Year, senior Molly Carlson led the women's team with three honors,
while sophomore Jakub Ksiazek and freshman Peter Varjasi led with men with five. Women's All-Americans

Swim & Dive Splits Home Opener Against Duke.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No.17/24 Florida State swimming and diving teams split a dual meet against NR/22 Duke on Saturday at the Morcom Aquatics Center.
The 17th-ranked men (1-1, 1-1 ACC) won three of the last four events, including a winner take all 400 free relay in order to defeat the Blue Devils (0-1, 0-1 ACC) 153-147. The No. 24 women (0-2, 0-2 ACC) dropped its contest to 22nd-ranked Duke, 123-177.
"I felt like we didn't come out of the gates as well as we needed to," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "We asked our captains and leaders to get the team fired up. We had a few key people out because they were sick, but in the end, we really dug deep and pulled out the win on the men's side. It made for an exciting day."
The Seminoles trailed by three points heading into the final event of the day, the 400 free relay.
The team of freshman Peter Varjasi, sophomore Max McCusker and seniors Griffin Alaniz and Vladimir Stefanik posted a time of 2:57.48 as Stefanik pulled the Noles to victory behind the fastest split in the race at 43.77.
"I just wanted to beat the guy," Stefanik said. "I had my race plan and I stuck to it. Everyone was cheering loud; I could hear it in the pool. It was great."
Duke's top team finished second and clocked a 2:58.20 ahead of FSU's B relay in third behind junior Gavin Jones, freshman Domen Demsar, freshman Aziz Ghaffari and senior Rudo Loock with a time of 3:00.28.

Heading into the final two swimming events, the Seminole took a four-point lead 134-130.
Vance took second in the 200 IM (1:51.74) and Lucas was fourth (1:53.41), putting Duke back in front, 140-143.

Swim & Dive Falls to Alabama.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 14/RV Florida State swimming and diving teams fell to RV/17 Alabama on a windy Saturday afternoon at the Morcom Aquatics Center.
The 14th-ranked men (4-3, 2-1 ACC) dropped a close decision to the RV Crimson Tide, 138-156, while the RV women (5-4, 1-2 ACC) fell 120-180.
"We had some good spots and some bad spots," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "We were rusty in parts, but we had some really good highlights. I saw a great team attitude, they were screaming for each other but maybe that slow start was the difference in the day and we just couldn't get there in the end."
In the men's meet, the Crimson Tide opened the meet with wins in the 200 medley relay and 1650 free.
Florida State followed with a strong showing in the 200 free, sweeping the event led by freshman Aziz Ghaffari in first (1:38.23), followed by seniors Rudo Loock (1:38.38), Vladimir Stefanik (1:40.08) and sophomore Max McCusker (1:40.63).
But Alabama answered by winning the next four races. In that stretch, the Seminoles swam a close 200 fly, but finished second, third and fourth behind senior Max Polianksi (1:39.15), freshman Nick Vance (1:49.78) and rookie Maurice Ingenrieth (1:49.97).
Off the first break, FSU found a little momentum as freshman Peter Varjasi won the 100 free (44.26) by one one-hundredth of a second after finishing second in the 50 free (20.26).
The Seminoles cruised to first and second place in the 200 back, led by Vance in first at 1:48.25, followed by sophomore Jackson Lucas in second (1:49.75).
FSU would finish second in the next three events, which were all tight races. Sophomore Izaak Bastian was the runner up in the 200 breast (2:00.91) and Ghaffari swam a strong last 50 yards in the 500 free, but also finished second at 4:31.31. McCusker added a second place finish in the 100 fly (48.29).
"There were some areas on where we got out-touched which changes the whole meet," Studd added. "Those races give us the victory instead of them. That's something we've talked about, we just didn't execute it today."
Varjasi picked up his second win of the day in the 200 IM, clocking a time of 1:49.02.
In diving, seniors Cam Thatcher and Aidan Faminoff dominated 1-meter, with Thatcher winning with a total of 369.90 ahead of Faminoff in second (290.25). The pair placed second and third on 3-meter as Thatcher took second (315.68) and Faminoff finishing third (301.05).
"The conditions weren't great," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "But they did a pretty good job. I don't know what's worse, golfing in this weather or diving in it. Overall, for where we are in the season, I thought we did a good job."
Florida State closed the meet by taking second, third and fourth in the 200 free relay, led by the team of freshman Ian Cooper, McCusker, sophomore Kuba Ksiazek and freshman Domen Demsar at 1:21.07.
The women were led by sophomore Nina Kucheran, who won three individual events on the day. Kucheran clocked a 1:01.79 for the victory in the 100 breast, before leading a one-two charge in the 200 breast (2:14.67) and held on to take the 200 IM (2:03.14).
Florida State added wins in the 200 fly, behind sophomore Aryanna Fernandes (2:00.23) as well as both springboard diving events.
Senior Molly Carlson posted her personal best score of 363.90 for the win, which was just 7.95 points off the school record set by Kelsey Goodman (373.05) back in 2013. Her classmate, Ayla Bonniwell was the winner on 1-meter (284.55) after taking third on 3-meter (323.25).
Sophomore Kertu Alnek was the runner-up in the 200 free (1:49.86) and her classmate Maddie McDonald also took second in the 200 back (2:00.39).
Freshman Sydney VanOvermeiren followed Kucheran in second in the 200 breast at 2:18.78 and Fernades added a second place finish in the 100 fly (54.36).
"It's the first meet after a long (training) break and Christmas," Studd said. "We got some of that rust off and we'll be ready to go to LSU next week."

Noles Smash Records, Win Medals on Opening Night of ACCs.
February 26, 2020
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No. 14 Florida State men's swimming and diving team started off the swimming portion of the ACC Championships in record-setting fashion on Wednesday night by winning silver in the 200 medley relay and bronze in the 800 free relay.
"It was an amazing first night for us," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "It was a great team environment. Two medals, an (NCAA) A cut and two records in one race, you just love to see it!"
The team of freshman Peter Varjasi, sophomore Jakub Ksiazek, freshman Aziz Ghaffari and senior Vladimir Stefanik set a new program record in the 800 free relay for bronze with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 6:15.94, which was almost three seconds faster than the mark that was set last season at 6:18.35.
It was the first podium appearance in the race since the 2010 meet when the Noles also won bronze.
Varjasi, in his first ACC Championship swim, led off the relay with a school record split of 1:32.76 in the 200 free, eclipsing the mark that was set by Ksiazek back in November (1:33.89).
The Seminoles opened the night be earning a spot on the podium in the 200 medley relay for the second straight ACCs, taking second behind senior Griffin Alaniz along with sophomores Izaak Bastian, Max McCusker and Ksiazek with an NCAA provisional time of 1:24.51.
FSU originally took third, however a disqualification on Louisville gave the Noles the silver.
With the two relays and men's 3-meter factored into the team scores, the Seminoles are in second place with a total of 155 points behind No.5 NC State.
Senior Max Polianski swam a time trial of the 200 fly,
clocking a time of 1:42.35, which was right on the mark that was invited to the 2019 NCAAs.
February 27, 2020
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No. 14 Florida State men's swimming and diving team was powered by its sprinters on Thursday night at the ACC Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, winning its second straight 200 free relay title after freshman Peter Varjasi won bronze in the 50 free.
The team of Varjasi, senior Griffin Alaniz along with sophomores Jakub Ksiazek and Max McCusker brought home FSU's second straight ACC title in the 200 free relay, touching at 1:16.69.
The Seminoles were neck-and-neck with Louisville heading into the final leg where McCusker used his underwater kicks off the turn to propel him into the lead. The Glastonbury, UK, native surged to the finish with a split of 18.93, giving the Noles the gold, lowering their NCAA qualifying time.
"I knew from the individual that my wall was the strongest part of my race," McCusker said. "So I threw a couple more kicks in and just held on."
"We had some good 50's," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "But we sat down and watched them all with the guys on the relay and found a few things to tweak.
The guys went out and executed the plan perfectly, especially Max on the end where he extended his underwater kicks, which I think made all the difference in the end."
Since 1992, Florida State has 12 200 free relay ACC titles, successfully defending its crown seven times. It's the first back-to-back victory in the event since the Noles claimed two-straight between 2012 and 2013.
"After graduating three from that relay that won last year, it is very special to come back and defended that title. Very special indeed!" Studd added.
Ksiazek was the lone returner from the 2019 historic sprint relays, earning his second 200 free relay gold and fifth career ACC medal.
Varjasi competed in his first individual ACC Championship final after qualifying tied for sixth at 19.52 in prelims.
In finals, Varjasi gained ground off the wall and charged to the finish, to move up and place third at 19.35. The German now owns the seventh fastest time in school history and is the third FSU medalist in the race since 2017.
Florida State had six total swimmers qualify for finals of the 50 free, which was the most at the meet.
In the consolation heat, the Seminoles finished 12th, 13th, and 14th, led by Alaniz (19.61), followed by Ksiazek (19.62) and freshman Ian Cooper (19.69).
Alaniz swam his personal best in prelims at 19.57 and Cooper continued to show improvement by clocking his best time at night after posting a 19.71 in prelims.
Senior Vladimir Stefanik lowered his best time in the C final, touching in 19th at 19.73 ahead of McCusker in 21st at 19.75.
Seniors Max Polianski and Rudo Loock competed in a tight consolation heat of the 200 IM with Polianski taking 12th at 1:45.82 after posting a 1:45.57 in prelims.
Loock qualified for finals in 15th at 1:46.38, which was a personal best and he moved up to take 13th at 1:46.08 in finals. The performance for Loock moves him up to sixth on the FSU all-time top 10 list.
Freshman Balazs Berecz clocked a 1:46.79, which was his personal best as well, moving him up to eighth all-time. At night, he posted a 1:46.96 for 23rd overall.
Freshman Aziz Ghaffari went to the front of the C final of the 500 free and finished second for 18th overall at 4:18.57.
With 1-meter diving factored into the team scores, the
Seminoles are in third place with a total of 383.5 behind No. 5 NC State (464) and No. 15 Virginia (400).

Carlson, Davidson Punch Tickets to NCAAs.
March 9, 2020
ATHENS, Ga. - Florida State divers Molly Carlson and Joshua Davidson are heading to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships after qualifying at the Zone B Championships at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on Monday.
Carlson started the day off by finishing second in a tight 1-meter field with a total of 579.75 and Davidson followed with a fifth place finish on 3-meter at 746.85.
Carlson secured her fourth-straight bid to the NCAA Championships and will join sophomores Nina Kucheran, Aryanna Fernandes and freshman Sydney VanOvermeiren at the meet, which will run from March 18-21 back at the University of Georgia.
As a junior, Davidson will compete at his third NCAAs the following week in Indianapolis, Ind., from March 25-28. The men's swimming list will be officially announced later this week, however the Seminoles will field all five relays after exceeding the qualifying times. FSU is also expected to be well represented in individual races as well.
"I am very proud of Molly and Josh," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "Both of them were solid today. They didn't really have any big misses over 12 dives and when you're at meets like this, that's what you've got to do. Our zone is very talented and competitive and one mistake could cost you and these two just gutted it out and did what they needed to do."
Over 12 dives, Carlson did not miss, scoring tallies from 44.85-54.00, receiving marks between 5.5-8.0. The Toronto, Ontario, native scored 288.25 for second place in prelims and held her rank in finals after adding 291.50, securing the bid by less than 10 points. She will be one of the seven divers representing Zone B at the NCAAs.
Davidson scored 375.90 in prelims behind scores of 5.5-8.0 for fourth place. In finals, the Tomball, Texas native, added a tally of 370.95 in order to earn one of the eight spots to NCAAs.
Seniors Ayla Bonniwell and Cam Thatcher were also in action on Monday. Bonniwell finished 10th on 1-meter with a score of 553.25 and Thatcher was 13th on 3-meter at 702.80.
Bonniwell rebounded on her sixth dive in prelims by scoring 48.75 on her back 1 1/2 somersault 1 1/2 twist for a final score of 265.45, for 13th. In finals, Bonniwell improved, adding 287.80 to her total, moving up to take 10th place at 553.25.
Thatcher started the day in 10th at 350.70. After a slow start in finals, Thatcher bounced back with four dives that exceeded the 60-point total, saving his
best for last at 71.30 on his front 3 1/2 somersault adding 352.10 for 13th.
March 10, 2020
ATHENS, Ga. - Florida State senior divers Cam Thatcher and Ayla Bonniwell will represent the Seminoles at the NCAA Championships after their performances at the Zone B Championships at the University of Georgia on Tuesday.
Thatcher advances to NCAAs after taking eighth place on 1-meter with a score of 631.05 and Bonniwell followed by finishing in sixth place on 3-meter with a score of 621.30 for her fourth-straight NCAA bid.
"What a day for our divers," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "Today could have been the last day of Cam and Ayla's careers and there were moments that could have done them in, but instead, they battled back and in different ways. Cam strategized and used dives that worked for him and Ayla just found another gear and there was no way she was going to miss. I am very proud of them."
For the first time as a Seminole and second time in his career, Thatcher will compete on 1-meter at the NCAA Championships from March 25-29 in Indianapolis, Ind. Bonniwell will join her classmate Molly Carlson, freshman Sydney VanOvermeiren and sophomores Nina Kucheran at the Women's NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., from March 18-21.
Junior Joshua Davidson and Carlson also added to their NCAA lists after finishing within the top 12 in their events after officially qualifying yesterday. Davidson placed second on 1-meter with a total of 746.85 over 12 dives and Carlson finished third at 646.10 on 3-meter.
"Molly and Josh have had an incredible post season," Proctor said. "They've been so consistent this week and it's been really fun to watch."
Both Thatcher and Davidson got off to a sluggish start in prelims, finding themselves in 15th and 21st place respectively halfway through the round.
After back-to-back misses, Davidson zoned in and registered scores of 58.50, 60 and 71.30 on his final three dives, climbing all the way up to fifth place. In finals, Davidson continued to make moves, scoring above 55 points on five of his six dives in order to secure second place after adding 370.95 to his total in finals.
Thatcher tallied 63 points on his reverse 2 1/2 somersault tuck in the fourth round in prelims, but suffered a mishap in the fifth. He rebounded with a massive score of 8.0's on his forward 3 1/2 somersault tuck for 72 points, which was one of the highest totals among all divers on any dive. His total of 316.85 placed him in a qualifying spot by just under seven points in seventh place.
"After ACCs, we talked about changing a few dives on his list," Proctor said. "He wanted to be able to change a dive to one he knew he could nail if he needed to, especially later in the list. He missed that fifth dive and I've never seen him react that way. He had the option to change his last dive, but instead he wanted to go after the front 3 1/2 and he just absolutely smoked it. It was awesome."
In finals, the Toledo, Ohio, native came out with two dives that scored between marks of 7.5-8.0, buying him a little breathing room. But after a miss on his third dive, Thatcher slipped to ninth and was just two points ahead of the 11th place contender.
Thatcher answered with 54-point scoring reverse 2 1/2 somersault tuck, moving up to eighth. But his fifth round dive proved to be the NCAA bid securing factor, after he scored 60.45 on his inward 2 1/2 - a dive he missed in prelims where he received 37.20 points.
Thatcher scored 6.5-7.0's on his last dive, which was changed to an inward 1 1/2 in order to take one of the 10 1-meter spots allotted for Zone B to NCAAs. He added a tally of 314.20 to his total in finals.
Bonniwell found herself in 27th place at one point in prelims, however she made an incredible effort on her final two dives, scoring 59.45 and 63.00 points in order to climb all the way into ninth place at 293.75.
"After her fourth round it looked like she wasn't even going to final," Proctor said. "On that fifth dive, she just flipped a switch and after prelims she was ninth and about 10 points away from a qualifying spot. She got that look in her eye and after that I knew she was going to do it."
After missing on her first dive in finals, Bonniwell answered with five dives above 50 points, including her best in the fifth round at 60.90 in order to take over a qualifying spot. She moved up to take sixth after adding 327.55 to her total.
"Coming back from 27th in order to make it is just remarkable," Proctor added. "I've never seen anything like it. She had some help with a few divers in front of her missing, but that's the nature of this meet and anything can happen and she hung in there and got it done."
Since Bonniwell finished within the top 12 on 1-meter on Monday, the Ithaca, N.Y., native can compete in bot springboard events at NCAAs.
Carlson scored 307.95 in prelims behind marks of 5.5-7.5 on each dive for sixth place. Again in finals, Carlson was consistent, adding a total of 338.15 in order to move up and take third.
Senior Aidan Faminoff dove in prelims of men's 1-meter, scoring 256.60 for 29th place.
March 11, 2020
ATHENS, Ga. - Senior diver Molly Carlson will dive a full list at the NCAA Championships for the third time in her career, after she took fifth place on platform with a score of 512.10 at the Zone B Championships in Athens, Ga.
"Another solid performance by Molly today," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "She wasn't going to be denied the opportunity to compete in her favorite event at her last collegiate meet. I'm so proud of what she's done this postseason and as a Seminole and I'm just glad she gets to go for it one more time on the biggest stage."
In prelims, Carlson only missed one of her five dives, scoring 265.25 for fourth place.
However, Carlson was a little off in the first three of her rounds in finals, but she got back on track by scoring 52.20 points on her back 2 1/2 somersault pike - the only dive she missed in prelims by scoring 37.70 points.
On her fifth and final dive, the Toronto, Ontario, native saved her best for last, capitalizing on her reverse 2 1/2 somersault tuck, scoring 71.40 points and moving up to finish in fifth place.
Senior Aidan Faminoff closed out his career in the Garnet and Gold after taking 10th on platform with a score of 630.25, in a very close field.
Faminoff started by scoring 330.30 in prelims for eighth place, just 11 points from sixth place and two points ahead of the ninth place competitor, who was out of NCAA qualifying position.
In finals, Faminoff started off on track, but a miss in the fourth round dropped him to ninth and kept the fight for the final qualifying spot too close to call between three divers. Faminoff answered with a 57-point scoring front 3 1/2 tuck in the fifth round, but he was out of a qualifying spot by about three points.
Needing his best dive of the day in order to qualify, Faminoff went for it but came up just short of advancing to NCAAs, finishing 10th with a total of 630.25.
"Today was an emotional day for all of us with Aidan," Proctor said. "He is such a part of so many people at FSU. Not just our team, but the entire athletics family. In true fashion, he kept it going until his last dive. It took a minute to realize it was the last one of his career and when it did it hit us all pretty hard. I'm proud of Aidan for his body of work here at FSU. He's left a mark here we'll remember for a long time. I know I'm not alone in saying we'll miss him very much."
