Florida State University has eliminated intercollegiate gymnastics competition from its athletic program, Athletic Director Vaughn Mancha said
today. "Gymnastics programs are not sponsored (on an intercollegiate basis) by other schools in the desired vicinity to insure us a representative schedule of meets," Mancha said. Mancha said
the Gymkana phase of FSU's gymnastics program would continue under its present administration by the Department of Physical Education. The elimination of intercollegiate competition in gymnastics
leaves FSU with seven sports - football, basketball, baseball, track, swimming, tennis and golf. FSU's gymnastics teams, under the leadership of Coach Hartley Price, won five national championships
from 1951 through 1955. The Seminoles won the NCAA and national AAU titles in 1951, the NCAA crown in 1952, and NAAU championships in 1953 and 1955. Price will remain at FSU as a full professor of
physical education.
