Seminole Men's Golfers Blixt And Savage Earn All-America Honors.
Blixt is an All-America second-team -- Savage is honorable mention.
June 6, 2007
TALLAHASSE, FL - Florida State University golfers Jonas Blixt and Matt Savage, who helped lead the Seminoles to a tie for 13th place finish in last week's NCAA Championship finals, have been named to
the Ping Division I All-America teams. Blixt earned All-America Second-Team honors and Savage earned All-America Honorable Mention accolades.
It marks the first time since 1995 that two Florida State golfers have earned All-America honors in the same season and the first time since 1998 that at least one Seminole has been named to one of
the All-America teams. Blixt was named as a member of the 10-member second team while Savage was one of 29 golfers to earn honorable mention honors.
Both Blixt (a junior) and Savage (a sophomore) have now earned All-America, Regional All-America and All-ACC Honors this season. Blixt led the team with a career-low 71.80 stroke average while Savage
ranked second with a career-low 72.16 stroke average. The Seminoles finished in a tie for 13th at the NCAA Division I Championship, fifth place in the NCAA East Regional Championship and in a tie for
fourth at the ACC Championship. The Seminoles' finish at the Division I Championship marked only the fourth time since 1980 that they have finished in the top 15 in the final standings of the national
tournament.
Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) earned individual medalist honors at the 2007 ACC Championship to become the first golfer in Florida State history to win the ACC title. He then finished in a tie for eighth
place in the regional championship and in a tie for 29th place in the national championship. Incredibly, he finished at even par for the entire spring season in a total of eight events. He turned in
the most outstanding performance of the first three years of his career in winning the ACC Championship at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. Blixt carded his single-round career-best score
of 65 in the final round, his career best three-round tournament score of 208 and his career-best three-round tournament score vs. par of minus eight in winning the event by one stroke.
Blixt begins play Thursday in the Palmer Cup -- the annual Ryder Cup-style competition between American collegiate golfers and their counterparts from Europe at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills,
Md.
Savage (Louisville, Ky.) finished in a tie for ninth at the NCAA Championship which was held last week at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. It was the highest individual finish for a
Seminole since Andy Purnell finished sixth at the NCAA's in 1990. Nolan Henke finished in second place in the individual standings in 1987. Savage earned 11 top-25 finishes in his 12 events this
season and finished no lower than 37th place in any of the tournaments he played as a sophomore. He was a cumulative total of five strokes over par in the Seminoles' big three events this spring - the
ACC Championship, the NCAA East Regional and the NCAA Championship.
"I am honored to be selected as an All-American as a sophomore" said Savage. "The honor is great but a lot of the credit has to go to Coach Jones whose vision for the golf program here at Florida
State is one that I really believe in and to my teammates who played so well all season long. This is just the beginning for the Seminole golf program; our ultimate goal is to win the national
championship. With the caliber of players on our roster and with the incoming freshmen, I only hope I can keep myself in the line-up next season."
The Seminoles enjoyed their best season under fourth-year Head Coach Trey Jones. The team advanced to the NCAA Championship finals for the first time since 1996, played in consecutive NCAA Regional
championships for the first time since the 1995 and 1996 seasons and earned seven top-five team finishes in 12 events during the fall 2006 and spring 2007 seasons.
"Both Jonas and Matt really worked hard this season and I am happy to see them earn this recognition," said Jones. "Both players value being named All-American understand what the honor means. I am
proud of them and all of the players on our team because individual honors are not won without team success."

Seminoles' Blixt Wins ACC Men's Golf Championship; Team Finishes Tied For Fourth.
Blixt ACC win is first-ever by a Florida State golfer.
NEW LONDON, NC - Florida State University junior Jonas Blixt shot a career-best seven-under par 65 in Sunday's third round and became the first Seminole to win the individual Atlantic Coast Conference men's golf championship as the event came to a close at the Old North State Club. Blixt finished with a career-best eight-under par tournament score of 208 to defeat Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale by one stroke to claim individual championship. His outstanding performance led the Seminoles to a tie for fourth place finish in the team standings - the best for Florida State since finishing in fourth in the 1996 conference championship. Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech finished tied for the team championship.
Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) shot 73-70-65=208 to claim the third individual championship of his career. He also won individual medalist honors at the spring 2005 Gator Invitational and the fall 2006 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate. Blixt began the final round of the event in a tie for 10th place and four strokes behind the individual leaders. He began the round on fire with an eagle three on the par-five first hole and counted three more birdies on the front nine to finish the first half of his day at five under. Blixt remained on fire in the back nine with birdies on the first three holes to move to eight under. After falling to six under with bogies on holes 14 and 17, he closed his championship day with a birdie on 18 to close his day and earn medalist honors.
"It's a great honor to win the championship of the ACC," said Blixt after winning the event. "I knew I had to get off to a good start and when I did, I just took if from there. I was aggravated at myself after making the two bogies but I just had to keep playing. I knew I had to come back and continue playing well. I told myself I was not going to look at the scoreboards during the round because you can't do anything about the scoreboards. The first time I saw a scoreboard was after my round was over. I am hoping that this result for our team puts all of my teammates into a positive frame of mind as we move ahead during the month of May."
Florida State played its' second best round of the year as they turned in a 279 team score while not counting a single score above a 72. The Seminoles' team round was tied for the best of the tournament - tied with Virginia Tech - with both teams shooting 279 on the final day. Florida State's 279 allowed them to finish in a tie for fourth place - an improvement of five places after placing ninth after the first round and standing sixth after the second round. It marks only the third time since joining the ACC for the 1992 season that Florida State has finished fourth or higher in the ACC men's golf championship. The Seminoles finished third in 1994 and fourth in 1996.
Freshman Cameron Knight (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) carded a two-under par 70 in the final round and finished in a tie for 25th place in the individual standings. He played his best round of golf during the final round with five birdies and only three bogies. Knight played the final 36 holes of the event at three-under par and finished with a 219 total - the second best of his Seminole career.
Senior Torstein Nevestad (Oslo, Norway) and sophomore Matt Savage (Louisville, Ky.) played even-par golf on the final day and finished in a tie for 19th and a tie for 25th, respectively. Nevestad carded even par scores of 72 in the second and third rounds and finished with a three-round total of 218 - the best of his senior season. He played even par golf on the front and back nines of the final round. It was Nevestad's best tournament score since carding a 211 at the spring 2006 Lexus/Naples Intercollegiate. Savage earned his ninth consecutive top-25 finish as he carded an even-par 72 in the final round and finished with a 219 total. After a slow start to his final round, he played his final 12 holes at two-under par to finish even on the afternoon and only three over for the tournament. Savage has now earned two consecutive top-25 ACC Championship places after finishing in a tie for 12th as a freshman in 2006.
Freshman Seath Lauer (Huntington, Ind.) carded his second consecutive round of 74 to finish with a 225 total and in a tie for 40th place. His 225 tournament score is tied for the third best of his freshman season and is the fifth top-50 individual finish of his seven-event Seminole career.
"I am extremely proud of the way we came out and competed today," said Head Coach Trey Jones. These guys came out today believing they could make run and win this thing and we were not that far off. Jonas came out today and proved why he is an All-America candidate."
Florida State closes out its regular season May 13-14 at the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, N.C. The Seminoles will then play in the NCAA Regional Championships May 17-19.

Seminoles Finish Third At Linger Longer Men's Golf Invitational.
Lauer leads Seminoles in pre-NCAA Regional Championship tune-up.
GREENSBORO, GA - Florida State freshman Seath Lauer played the best tournament of his collegiate career in finishing in a tie for fourth place in the individual standings to lead the Seminoles to a third place finish in the Linger Longer Invitational at the Oconee Course at the Reynolds Plantation. The Seminoles had three of their five players finish under par for the 54-hole tournament that is serving as a tune-up for the teams' second consecutive appearance in the NCAA East Regional Championship beginning Thursday at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta.
No. 1 ranked Georgia carded the two best team rounds of the tournament including a 12-under par 276 in the third round to win the event by 19 strokes over second place Georgia State and 21 over the third place Seminoles. Georgia's Chris Kirk finished with a 10-under par 206, including a 65 in the first round, to claim medalist honors. Nine of the 15 teams who participated in the Linger Longer will play in one of the three NCAA Regional championships including Georgia, Florida State, Chattanooga, Georgia State and Charlotte - the top five finishing teams in the tournament.
Lauer (Huntington, Ind.) was the Seminoles' standout as he set personal-best marks for 36-hole score (138), gross tournament score (210), tournament score vs. par (minus 6) and best finish (tied for fourth) in leading the Seminoles to their fourth top three team finish of the year. Lauer carded an even par 70 and only a bogie on his final hole of the tournament kept him from firing three-sub par rounds in the same tournament for the first time in his career. He had three birdies and was one-under par over the front nine and had one bogie and was one-over par on the back nine to finish with an even-par score of 72. Lauer played so well over the course of the 54-hole tournament that he was never over par at any point during the event. His individual finish marked the third top-20 finish of his eight-tournament Seminole career.
Junior Jonas Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) continued to play well as he finished in a tie for eighth place with a four-under par tournament score of 212. He finished the event with an even par 72 in the third round - a round that included four birdies and only three holes over par. Blixt, who became the first Florida State golfer to win an ACC championship in April, is a total of 12-under par in his last six rounds. Blixt now has six top-10 finishes this year and eight for his career.
Senior Torstein Nevestad (Oslo, Norway) continued to play the best golf of his Florida State career as he closed the event with an even-par 72 in the final round. His 215 tournament total is tied for the second best of his Seminole career and was his best score since firing a 211 at the spring 2006 Lexus/Naples Intercollegiate. Nevestad finished in a tie for 17th place to earn his second consecutive and 14th top-20 placing of his collegiate career. He finished in a tie for 19th place in the recently played ACC Championship.
Seminole sophomore Matt Savage (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Cameron Knight (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) finished tied for 37th and tied for 44th respectively. Savage closed the event with a 79 after carding a 70 in the first round and a 72 in the second round while Knight closed with a 79 after carding a 71 in the first round and a 72 in the second round.
"I am extremely happy with our guys and how they are playing right now," said Head Coach Trey Jones. "We were the only team in a pretty good field with all of our guys at or below par and only two hiccups on the back nine in the third round put two players above par."
The Seminoles begin play in the NCA East Regional Championship Thursday with this same set of five players. The quintet has played together in the last two events for the Seminoles and has earned a tied for fourth place finish in the ACC Championship and a third place finish in the Linger Longer. Florida State is looking to advance to NCAA Championship final round for the first time since 1996.
"We are right where we want to be going into the regional," said Jones. "Seath Lauer is a great example of the spirit of this team. He was not the low man last week (at the ACC Championship) and
competed to become the low man this week. We are excited about going back to the Country Club of Georgia. If we play like we played all year long we will be just fine in the regional."

Seminole Men's Golf Team Earns First Trip To NCAA Finals Since 1996.
Jones leads Seminoles to fifth place finish in NCAA East Regional Championship.
ALPHARETTA, GA - The Florida State men's golf team finished in fifth place in the team standings at the NCAA East Regional Championship on the Lakeside Course at the Golf Club of Georgia and earned a spot in the NCAA Championship finals for the first time since 1996. The Seminoles played their best round and counted four under par individual scores to finish with a seven-under par 281 team score in Saturday's third and final round. Florida State will now play in the championship finals for the 18th time in school history and the first time under fourth-year Head Coach Trey Jones. The Seminoles begin play in the NCAA Championship finals May 30-June 2 at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.
"The resiliency of our players is main thing I am going to remember about them from this tournament," said Head Coach Trey Jones. "As we look back on how we played this course the previous two times we were here and how we played this week - I can't say enough or commend our players enough for playing so well under pressure."
"I'm not really surprised by how well we played," continued Jones. "I'm also not surprised that we had one of the lowest rounds of the tournament. One of the goals I had as a coach today was to have all of our players shoot par or better in the last round. You have to play this course almost perfectly to have only one guy shoot above par.
Florida State shot 281 as a team with three individual scores of 70 by junior Jonas Blixt, sophomore Matt Savage and freshman Seath Lauer. The Seminoles also counted a 71 by senior Torstein Nevestad toward the team score. The only score not counted in the team score was a two-over par 73 by freshman Cameron Knight. The Seminoles' 281 team score was their fourth best of the season. In addition, the 281 team score put up by the Seminoles in the third round was tied for the top team score of the event along with the 281 total by Georgia in the third round. The Bulldogs, currently ranked as the nation's No. 1 team, won the regional championship by 12 strokes over second place Florida.
"We are ahead of schedule in the maturation of our program," said Jones. "Advancing to the finals was a major goal of our program and we knew we had the team to do it this season. Our players just had to compete. They proved that if you want something you have to go out and get it - and they did."
Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) finished as the Seminoles' top golfer with a one-under par total of 215 - the fifth lowest tournament score of his junior season. He improved his scores on the second and third days of the event. After carding a one-over par 73 in the first round, he totaled an even-par 72 in the second round and finished with a two-under par 70 in the final round. Blixt was one under par with two birdies and one bogie on the front and back nines to earn his team-leading seventh score of the 70 or less this season.
Blixt, an All-ACC selection, finished in a tie for ninth place in the individual standings to earn his career-high seventh top-10 finish of the season.
"I am rally happy that we advanced on as a team," said Blixt. "All of the guys on our team produced this week and showed what we are all capable of. I knew that we could be successful what I first came to Florida State and I knew that we could do it quickly. Our advancing to the finals is a tribute to Coach Jones and his vision for golf at Florida State. I knew when I first spoke with him that there were big things in store for this program and this is just the beginning of many great things to come for Seminole golf."
Savage (Louisville, Ky.) played his best round of golf in the third round as he carded a two-under par 70 and finished in a tie for 24th place with a 220 total for the three round event. He also improved his single round scores throughout the event. After carding a 78 in the first round he finished with an even-par 72 in the second round and an even-par 70 in the final round. Savage closed the event as strong as any player in the field with a five-under par total over his final 12 holes of the round.
Savage, who was also an All-ACC selection in 2007, moved from a tie for 56th place after two rounds into a tie for 24th place in the final standings. He led the Seminoles with 12 birdies during the regional championship.
Lauer (Huntington, Ind.) continued his strong postseason play as he closed the event with a two-under par 70 and a 222 total - the fourth best tournament score of his first collegiate season. He began his stellar third round performance with a birdie and was under par throughout the round. He carded three birdies and was at three-under par at the turn after nine holes and pared eight of his nine holes on the back nine. Lauer played his final 39 holes of the event at one-under par.
Lauer begin the third round in a tie for 71st place and finished in a tie for 40th place in the final standings - an improvement of 31 places in the individual standings. Lauer is averaging 72.00 strokes in his last six rounds played.

He was very consistent over each day of the event as he averaged 74.00 strokes per round and did not finish with a score above 75. Knight was below par for his first 14 holes of the third round and finished at one-over par top earn his best single round score of the event. Knight ranked second on the team with 11 birdies over the 54-hole tournament.
Knight is a total of 15 strokes over par in his last three tournaments and averages 73.67 strokes in his last nine rounds.
Nevestad (Oslo, Norway) tied his season-best single-round score with his one-under par 71 in the final round. He birdied two of his final four holes (including the 18th) to move under par for the round. After a birdie on his second hole of the round, Nevestad reeled off 12 consecutive pars and closed with birdies on 15 and 18 to earn his best single-round score of the event.
Nevestad finished with a six-over par score of 222 - the third consecutive event he has finished at six-over par or better. He is a total of seven-over par and averages 72.78 strokes since returning to the Seminoles' starting line-up for the ACC Championship.
"This is an awesome feeling," said Nevestad. "I have always wanted to play in the national finals and now my teammates have made that possible for me. It doesn't get much better for me than to know that I will play my last round of golf in college in the national tournament.
"I have to give a lot of credit to our freshman - Seath Lauer and Cameron Knight - who played like they were seniors in this tournament," continued Nevestad. "With Jonas and Matt our team is stacked and stacked for the future. You have to play well to make this line-up and I am just happy to have a chance to play with these guys. To be able to go with Coach Jones to the finals is a great feeling. To know how successful Florida State golf is going to be with him as the head coach is something that I will be able to look back on and be very proud of when my golfing days are over."
Led by tournament co-medalist Brendon Todd, the No. 1-ranked Georgia men's golf team won the regional championship. Georgia finished 12 shots ahead of Florida, Auburn and Georgia Tech. Todd shared
