FSU golf coach Giles resigns.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Veteran Florida State men's golf coach Verlyn Giles will relinquish the position he has held nine years to become an assistant to the athletic director.
"He'll be doing various administration duties - mostly helping with the transition of our athletic program into the ACC," FSU athletic director Bob Goin said. "He has indicated an interest for years that he would like to get into administration. I think the time is right (to make the changes) with us going in a new situation (the ACC)."
Giles is expected to take over his new duties in July. He could not be reached for comment.
The new coach will coordinate both the men's and women's programs. However, Debbie Miles-Dillman will remain as the women's coach.
Giles was named the head coach of the FSU women's team in 1978, and then became the men's coach six years later.
He
coached the Lady Seminoles to the 1981 Association for Intercollegiate Athletic Womens Championship. In 1990 his men's team placed eighth - the second-highest finish for FSU in an NCAA Golf
Championship.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Dr. Ernie Lanford of Augusta College has been named coordinator of golf and head men's golf coach at Florida State.
Lanford, 56, is an associate professor. He was the Big South Conference coach of the year five of the last six seasons. Hid Division I program won the conference championship each year except 1988.
He earned his bachelor's degree from Florida State, his Master's from Michigan State and a doctorate from Brigham Young. Lanford has been at Augusta since 1982.
"We've attracted a nationally known coach of excellence," FSU athletic director Bob Goin said. "His record speaks for itself. He's an educator, an outstanding recruiter and a great team man.
"Now I want golf to take its place in (FSU's) chase for a national championship."
According to assistant athletic director Jan Stocker, Lanford was one of six finalists interviewed by the search committee she co-chaired.
The other finalists were: Jimmy Duval, golf pro from Venice; Joe Feaganes, Marshall University golf coach; Richard Sykes, North Carolina State golf coach; Eric Smith, golf pro from Jacksonville; and Craig Reitz, a golf pro from Naples.
He'll replace Verlyn Giles, who will take over administrative duties at FSU.
