Veller resigns at FSU.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – When a man retires, you know he’s looking forward to playing golf in that spare time. Don Veller is no different.
Veller resigned Thursday as the Florida State mens’ golf coach. With all the pressures that accompany taking the Seminoles from a humble program to national prominence during 16 seasons, which Veller did, you can bet that he’ll savor his upcoming private time on the greens.
“I’m going to play more by myself,” said Veller, 70. “I love the game. I still carry my own bag.”
Sixteen seasons is a long time to coach anything, and Veller’s 16 were spread over 29 years.
He coached the Seminoles first between 1953 and ’58; returned in 1967 for two more seasons and came back again in 1974 for his recent eight-year run, his most successful.
FSU golf has enjoyed, thanks to Veller, a national top-10 ranking since 1974 and a top-five ranking for much of the last two seasons.
The current Seminole team won four invitationals last spring, including an unprecedented sixth Metro Conference title.
And the recruiting of prospects has taken on something of an international aura under Veller: six golfers from England, one from Scotland, and a pair from Canada, all have been lured to Tallahassee.
Several former FSU golfers have become club professionals throughout the country. Still others, such as Walker Cuppers, Downing Gray and Don Fischesser, and Jack Veghte, earned post-collegiate reputations as outstanding amateurs.
Three Veller-coached players are touring professionals – 1977 U.S. Open winner Hubert Green, the most prominent, and Paul Azinger and Kenny Knox, the most recent.
“I’ve had a few successes,” said Veller, who still takes pride in telling how he was his high scool’s salutatorian, more than 50 years after the fact. “We’ve got a golf tradition going at FSU – like football.”
Oddly, Veller’s real roots at FSU are in football. He was the Seminoles’ first fulltime football coach, in 1948. Through 1952, his last season, Veller’s teams were 31-12-3.
Said Veller: “I guess I’m one of the few coaches who quit voluntarily.”
He has been associated continuously with the university athletic department since 1948, either in a coaching or fund raising capacity. He will stay on with FSU athletics in a public and alumni relations role.
Veller will continue with his “Divot Diggins” column for The Democrat, which he has written for 22 years.
No interim golf coach has been selected, though a decision is expected in a few days.
Giles becomes coach of men’s golf team, too.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Verlyn Giles, head coach of women’s golf at Florida State since 1979, was named late Tuesday as the new men’s golf coach at the university.
Giles, who will continue his duties as women’s coach and general manager of Seminole Golf Course, replaces Don Veller, who resigned as men’s coach last week.
Giles, who lead the Lady Seminoles to the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women national title in 1981, said he anticipates no problems in his expanded role. He said he expected to hire an assistant to help with the coaching of the two teams.
“I’ve been closely associated with the men’s team at the golf course (Seminole) for 11 years,” he said. “I’m very available.
“I’ll be busy, but I enjoy my work.
“But the secret is to have good help. I think with good help, the entire program can be better coordinated this way, and any problems can be simplified.”
Giles, who will receive only one paycheck, said he would be paid “a decent salary” based on a percentage of the salaries budgeted for the two coaching positions.
Giles, 45, received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Florida State in 1961 and his master’s degree in the same field in 1963. As a graduate student, he assisted Mike Long with the Seminole track team before becoming a high school coach.
He spent two years as an assistant football coach and head coach of track and golf at Palmetto High in Manatee County. The next seven years he spent at Leon High as an assistant football coach.
In 1971, Giles, who took up golf as a graduate student was named head pro and general manager of the Seminole Golf Course after attending the Professional Golfers Association business school.
He and his wife Katherine, have been married 24 years and have three daughters, Stephanie, 17, Stacy, 12, and Kacci, 8.
