After 10 years of coaching at Florida State University, Dr. Don Veller has resigned to take on Broader teaching duties in this school's Physical Education Department.
Bill Odeneal, coach of FSU volleyball since 1949, will become golf coach.
Volleyball will be dropped from the list of FSU intercollegiate sports.
The changes were described by Dr. Charley Davis, chairman of the Athletic Committee, as "normal readjustment" in the FSU sports program.
Dr. Veller, head coach of FSU football for five seasons and of golf for five more, will assume duties that will include teaching of athletic administration, counseling of physical education majors and the patterning of a teaching schedule in the department.
Top Record
Eminently successful here in both sports he coached, Veller had a football record of 31 victories, 12 defeats and one tie, with one unbeaten season and a triumph in the Cigar Bowl. His golfers won 45 dual meets, lost eight, racked up two straight Florida Intercollegiate championships, beat University three of four dual meets, finished fifth in last year's NCAA tourney, won 26 of their last 27 dual matches.
Dr. Veller will continue coaching the golf team through next month's NCAA tournament at Colorado Springs. Athletic Committee permission to play in the NCAA was granted during the week after earlier indications the team might have to stay at home because of the expense involved.
One member of the Athletic Committee, explaining Dr. Veller's change, said: "We needed help in the Physical Education Department, and Don is an excellent teacher."
'Best Move'
Dr. Veller himself said he was leaving coaching "with mixed emotions." He added: "This will be the first time, you know, I've been out of coaching altogether. But this appears to be the best move for me since I spent several years getting my doctor's degree and preparing myself for this type of work."
Once a head coach in tennis, too, Dr. Veller had a 7-1 season at University of Indiana, where he served as a football assistant coach before coming to FSU. A star halfback at Indiana in his playing days, Dr. Veller had an outstanding high school coaching record at Elkhart, Ind., where his football team won 54 games, lost 11 and tied three.
Odeneal, a capable golfer who shoots in the 70s, has taught golf courses at FSU since 1949. Former owner of a driving range here, he helped design two 9-hole golf courses at FSU.
The Athletic Committee stressed that volleyball players presently receiving scholarship aid will continue on the same basis. They will be permitted to stay with the sport "on their own" and may defend the national collegiate championship they won earlier this month at the National AAU tournament.
Reason for dropping volleyball had to do with the departure of Dr. Howard Danford as athletic director and the fact that the team had difficulty scheduling capable competition. One member of the Athletic Committee said: "It does not fit sports programs in the Southeast - it's sort of a West Coast sport."
Dr. Danford, who resigned in March, was something of a national volleyball booster who the last three years conducted clinics for the U.S. Army in Europe.
Asked whether other sports might be dropped at FSU, Dean Davis replied in the negative. He added: "We hope one day to add wrestling to our intercollegiate program, but not this year. Some boys are working out informally in wrestling now."
No one has been appointed to take Dr. Danford's vacated position as athletic director, and there's no indication the Athletic Committee will make any move in this direction any time soon.
Possibly more developments can be expected in FSU athletics after a new president is named. Dr. Doak Campbell retires next month.
