Cross-country coach leaves FSU for Italy.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – John Brogle, Florida State Men’s cross-country and assistant track coach said Wednesday he will leave Florida State immediately to take a position with Naples American School in Naples, Italy.
Brogle was a member of the FSU coaching staff for seven years. He coached FSU cross-country teams to three Metro Conference championships and three second-place finishes.
His 1981 squad placed eighth at the NCAA championships, the highest finish ever for an FSU cross-country team.
Brogle and his family will leave the United States on Monday for Naples, where he will work as a coach and physical-education teacher.
Naples American School is run by the U.S. Department of Defense for children of American military personnel stationed at the base in Naples. It is the largest among more than 20 American high schools in the Mediterranean region.
Brogle will coach cross country and track and field for men and women while in Naples.
FSU names track assistant.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Jeff Ward, one of the top 10 collegiate pole vaulters in NCAA history, has been named assistant track and field coach at Florida State. Ward replaces John Brogle, who resigned to coach and teach in Italy after seven years at FSU.
Ward will coach the pole vault, the high jump, the throws and the multi-events for both the men’s and women’s teams, because of the reorganization of the Seminole track and field program.
As a collegian, the East Lansing, Mich., native finished fifth in the nation at the NCAA Championships, earning All-American status. His 18-2 ½ personal best in the vault is the top mark by a Michigan native.
Ward was a graduate assistant coach in both 1983 and 1985 at Florida State while on an NCAA post-graduat scholarship that allowed him to earn a master’s degree came from Miami (Ohio) University in 1982.
In addition to his coaching duties, Ward will serve as an instructor in FSU’s School of Physical Education.
