Mike Martin, Jr. Named FSU Baseball’s Ninth Head Coach.
Longtime Seminole assistant will take the reins after 25 years as a Seminole player and
coach.
June 21, 2019
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Longtime Florida State assistant coach Mike Martin, Jr. has been named the ninth head baseball coach in FSU history. Florida State Director of Athletics David Coburn made the announcement Friday, elevating Martin to the head role that his father held for 40 years before him. Martin becomes the first new head baseball coach the Seminoles have hired since 1980.
“I have every confidence Mike Martin Jr. will carry on the winning tradition of Florida State University baseball,” said FSU President John Thrasher. “For more than two decades as an assistant coach, he has shown he is a talented recruiter, passionate competitor and respected mentor to our student-athletes. While Mike Martin Jr. brings his own strengths and style of coaching to the program, his values, integrity and love for this university will carry on the proud legacy of his father.”
“I want to thank President John Thrasher and Director of Athletics David Coburn for entrusting me with this special program,” said Martin. “I'm very honored and humbled to be able to lead Florida State. It's been a privilege to serve at this great University for the past 22 years and I'm excited to extend FSU's 70-year history of success moving forward.”
Martin has spent all 22 years as an assistant coach at his alma mater, focusing on hitting and recruiting. The former All-American catcher for the Seminoles has compiled eight straight Top 10 recruiting classes, while his offenses have a combined .300 batting average since 1998. Florida State has made the postseason and won at least 40 games every year under Martin, with eight College World Series appearances, 17 NCAA super regionals and six Atlantic Coast Conference titles.
“After serving under one of the all-time greats, we will combine much of what was learned from him with our new staff's style and ideas in our pursuit of championships,” added Martin.
Martin has coached 16 Major Leaguers, 16 freshman All-Americans, 21 first team All-Americans and 41 student-athletes who have earned first, second or third team All-America accolades. In all, 77 Seminoles have earned All-ACC honors and 65 hitters have been selected in the Major League Baseball draft during that stretch.
Martin has coached four Seminole hitters that captured National Player of the Year honors - Shane Robinson, Tony Thomas, Buster Posey and James Ramsey.
Prior to joining Florida State’s staff, Martin was FSU’s starting catcher from 1993-95, leading FSU to the College World Series in 1994 and 1995. He was drafted out of college by San Diego in the ninth round in 1995. Before coming to Florida State, Martin played high school ball at the Maclay School in Tallahassee and at Manatee Community College in 1992.
“We are very excited to have Mike Martin, Jr. leading our baseball program into the future,” said Coburn. “His commitment to, passion for and experience with the Seminole program are second to none.
“His plan for the next era of Seminole baseball is impressive. He knows what he wants to do and how he wants to do it. After traveling with this teamfor the last three and a half weeks, I have come away very impressed with his relationships with the players, his attention to detail and hisunderstanding of the great game of college baseball.”

Offensive Explosion Leads Noles Over Niagara.
FSU scores 24 runs on 14 hits, 13 walks.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Freshman Tyrell Brewer scored four runs and notched a three-run double Saturday against Niagara, leading Florida State (1-1) to a 24-4 win over Niagara (1-1) at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles combined for 14 hits, drew 13 walks and were hit by five pitches against six Purple Eagles pitchers.
Shane Drohan threw 3.2 innings, striking out five and allowing one earned run. Six FSU relievers combined to strike out seven batters and walk just one. Parker Messick (1-0) earned the win by pitching a perfect sixth inning.
The Seminoles struck early and often Saturday, scoring eight runs in the second inning. That frame featured Brewer's three-run double as well as a two-run single from Elijah Cabell and a ground-rule two-run double from Robby Martin. Cabell scored four runs and had four RBI in the contest.
Freshman Dylan Simmons hit an RBI double in his first at-bat as a Seminole. He finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and pitched an inning in relief.
Carter Smith, a fifth-inning replacement at catcher for Mat Nelson, launched FSU's first home run of the season, a three-run blast to right field that provided the final margin Saturday.
In total, 12 Seminoles scored at least once, while 10 FSU players had a hit and 10 players recorded an RBI.
Drohan left the game after taking a line drive off his body, but head coach Mike Martin, Jr. confirmed that would have been his last batter of the game at 79 pitches. Doug Kirkland threw one pitch to end the fourth inning, then Simmons, Messick, Jack Anderson, Brandon Walker and Clayton Kwiatkowski each threw one inning of relief.
It was the first career appearance of Kirkland, Simmons, Messick and Walker's careers.
The win was also the first for Martin, Jr. as Florida State's head coach. He spent the previous 22 seasons as an assistant coach for the Noles.

First Inning Outburst Leads Noles Past Niagara.
FSU clinches rubber match vs. Purple Eagles.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Aided by seven runs in the first inning, No. 14 Florida State (2-1) beat Niagara (1-2) 11-1 Sunday afternoon at a wet and rainy Dick Howser Stadium. Conor Grady earned the win in his first start of 2020, throwing five innings of two-hit ball with seven strikeouts.
FSU sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring seven runs against Steven Hospital (0-1) in his first career start. Freshman Tyler Martin's two-run double capped the scoring after RBI singles from Reese Albert, Robby Martin, Dylan Simmons and Nander De Sedas. Jackson Greene also drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Niagara had an opportunity to plate a run in the first inning, putting runners at first and third with one out after a double and an FSU throwing error. Grady induced a double play when Peter Battaglia lined out to Tyler Martin at third base and doubled up Michael Gabriele at first.
Grady struck out five straight batters in the second and third innings when he settled in. Starting with Battaglia's double play ball, Grady retired 12 straight hitters before Mike Brisson's single in the fifth.
FSU added a run in the second inning when reliever Kyle Smyth walked De Sedas with the bases loaded. Robby Martin hit his second double of the season in the third inning to give FSU a 10-0 lead.
FSU pitchers Chase Haney, Bryce Hubbart, Tyler Ahearn and Davis Hare each threw an inning in relief. The bullpen allowed two hits and struck out eight batters. The Purple Eagles run came on a Hare wild pitch in the ninth inning.

Nelson's 3-R HR Powers Noles Past Bulls.
Five FSU pitchers combined to allow just one earned run.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Facing its largest deficit of the season, No. 14 Florida State (3-1) scored the final seven runs of the game to beat USF (2-3) 7-3 Tuesday night in front of 4,005 fans at Dick Howser Stadium. Sophomore catcher Mat Nelson's three-run home run in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie.
Senior pitcher Chase Haney (1-0) earned the win with 2.1 innings of shutout ball. Florida State retired 15 of the final 16 batters faced, ending the game with perfect eighth and ninth innings from Jonah Scolaro and Doug Kirkland, respectively.
Nelson finished with four RBI after adding a seventh inning, bases loaded walk. Third baseman Carter Smith had two hits and a two-run single in the fourth inning that cut USF's lead to 3-2. Freshman leadoff hitter Tyler Martin drew a bases loaded walk later in the frame to even the game at 3-3 through four innings.
The Bulls struck first against FSU starter Jack Anderson. USF drew a walk to start the game and Dontae Mitchell came around to score after a pair of weak singles. USF scored twice more in the third inning when Mitchell singled and JD Dutka walked to end Anderson's day. Freshman Parker Messick retired two batters with the bases loaded, and FSU was primed to get out of the inning unscathed, but a throwing error in the infield allowed USF to take a 3-0 lead.
USF had just three baserunners over the final six innings, however, as the Seminole bullpen struck out 10 batters, allowed three hits walked just one in relief.
Elijah Cabell reached base three times without a hit (two walks and his third hit-by-pitch of the season). Robby Martin had a pair of singles in the game.
USF starter Nick Davila allowed a hit and two walks, but no runs, in 2.0 innings pitched. The Bulls used four relief pitchers, with Matt Marini (0-1) making his season debut and surrendering the tie-breaking home run to Nelson in the sixth. First baseman Riley Hogan was 3-for-3 for the Bulls; USF's other hitters combined to hit 3-for-31.

Cabell's Three-Run Homer Pushes Noles Past Bearcats.
FSU scores 10 runs over final three innings.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - No. 14 Florida State (4-1) notched eight hits and scored 10 runs over the final three innings, topping Cincinnati (0-4) 11-4 Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium. Cabell finished with four RBI after drawing a bases loaded hit-by-pitch in the seventh inning. He was hit by a pair of pitches and also drew a walk against the Bearcats. Reese Albert and Robby Martin had a pair of hits in the late innings - Albert hit his first two doubles of the year, while Martin's two-run single pushed FSU's lead to 8-3 in the seventh inning.
Starting pitcher CJ Van Eyk struggled in the cold weather, with temperatures sitting in the 40s throughout the game. Haney Earns Win in 100th Career Appearance.
Cabell homers, ties school HBP record.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Redshirt senior Chase Haney became the seventh pitcher in FSU history to record 100 relief appearances, throwing two scoreless innings in FSU's 10-5 series-clinching victory over Cincinnati (0-5). Haney (2-0) has pitched in five of six games in 2020.
No. 14 Florida State (5-1) used a pair of home runs, from Elijah Cabell and Reese Albert, to pull away in the later innings. Cabell homered for the second consecutive game and has seven RBI in the series. He also tied the FSU record with three hit-by-pitches Saturday and has been hit by a pitch five straight games and eight times already in 2020.
Leadoff hitter Tyler Martin had the first three-hit game of his career and Nander De Sedas had two hits, including a two-run single that gave FSU a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning that it did not relinquish. FSU's three runs in the sixth inning were on Cabell's home run, and the two runs in the eighth inning were on Albert's first home run of the season.
Cincinnati held leads of 2-0 and 4-3, but FSU countered to immediately tie or take the lead both times. After allowing a pair of runs in the second inning, FSU tied the game on an RBI single from Carter Smith and a sacrifice bunt from Jackson Greene. Smith's single scored Robby Martin, who was on third base after his first career triple.
In the fifth inning, Cincinnati retook the lead at 4-3 on an unearned run against Doug Kirkland. Haney replaced Kirkland and did not allow a run in the fifth or sixth innings as FSU stretched its lead to 8-4.
Florida State starter Shane Drohan pitched four innings, giving up four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.
Antonio Velez allowed a solo home run in two innings pitched; Dylan Simmons closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning, forcing three groundouts to De Sedas at shortstop.
Four Cincinnati players had two hits, including Griffin Merritt, who homered off Velez for his first of the season in the seventh inning.

Cabell's Grand Slam Caps Weekend Sweep.
Sophomore OF finished Cincinnati series with three HR, 11 RBI.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Sophomore outfielder Elijah Cabell continued to shine at the plate for Florida State, hitting his second career grand slam in the Seminoles' 10-1 win over Cincinnati Sunday at Dick Howser Stadium. Florida State (6-1) capped the series sweep on just five hits and despite four errors.
Cabell's monster weekend against the Bearcats (0-6) included three home runs - a three-run home run that gave FSU the lead Friday night; a three-run home run Saturday that gave FSU a four-run lead; and Sunday's fourth-inning grand slam, FSU's first hit of the game that capped a seven-run inning. Cabell had 11 RBI on the weekend and reached base at a .667 clip after getting hit five times and drawing two walks.
Conor Grady (2-0) earned his second straight win, allowing a run on three hits. Bryce Hubbart, Parker Messick, Jonah Scolaro and Brandon Walker each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
Drake Batcho (0-1) did not allow a hit for Cincinnati, but walked six batters and struck out seven. FSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on two walks and three wild pitches from the left-hander, but immediately tied the game on Griffin Merritt's second home run of the weekend.
Batcho left the bases loaded in the third inning on three walks to escape trouble. His sixth walk of the day, to Dylan Simmons, started the fourth inning and was Batcho's final batter. Reliever Ben Vore walked three batters and hit two batters to give FSU a 4-1 lead without a hit. Garrett Schoenle gave up the home run to Cabell on his third pitch of the game.
FSU added a run in the seventh inning with two-out hits from Carter Smith and Nander De Sedas. The Noles scored in the eighth inning on a Robby Martin single.

Noles Surrender One Hit in 5-1 Win vs. FAU.
Van Eyk earns first win of year; Nelson goes 2-for-3.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - No. 14 Florida State (7-1) earned a 5-1 win over FAU (7-2) Friday in front of 4,249 fans at Dick Howser Stadium. Three Florida State pitchers, led by starter CJ Van Eyk (1-0), combined to allow just one hit against the Owls. Catcher Mat Nelson was 2-for-3 with a single, double, walk, hit by pitch and two RBI.
Aside from a rocky third inning when he walked three batters and hit Wilfredo Alvarez with the bases loaded, Van Eyk had his best outing of the young season. The right-hander struck out eight batters and allowed just one fifth-inning hit to Francisco Urbaez, the Owls only hit in the game. Chase Haney made his sixth appearance of the year, pitching around an error in the seventh inning. Antonio Velez needed just 20 pitches in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the game.
Offensively, FSU tied the game in the third inning when Tyler Martin scored on a double play from Reese Albert. Nelson doubled to deep left field in the fifth inning and Martin was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first base. Nelson gave FSU a 2-1 lead on Albert's RBI infield single.
Martin drew a four-pitch, bases loaded walk for a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning. Nelson followed with a two-run single against reliever Mike Entenza. Jacob Josey (0-1) allowed just two hits in 4.2 innings for the Owls but walked four and hit three batters.
All nine of Florida State's starters reached base safely via a hit, walk, or hit by pitch.
