Gators slam FSU in opener.
By Steve Ellis OMAHA, NE - Seven outs shy of walking on clouds, Florida State walked its way into a familiar corner at the College World Series on Saturday.
And just when it looked as if the Seminoles had run out of ways to lose here.
FSU was hanging on to a 2-1 lead over Florida with two out in the seventh when two Seminole pitchers loaded the bases on three walks.
Florida outfielder Brad Wilkerson did the rest with a grand slam to defeat FSU 5-2 before 16,064 in the first round of the CWS at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Wilkerson then came on in relief and struck out Jeremy Morris with the bases loaded with two out in the eighth inning to end a huge FSU threat.
The No. 7 seeded Seminoles (51-16) once again face early elimination after losing to the No. 2-seeded Gators (49-16). FSU coach Mike Martin, who is 11-17 in the CWS, has seen his teams lose their first game in five of nine CWS appearances.
"You got to really take your hat off to the University of Florida," Martin said. "They got exactly what they needed … the big hit and outstanding pitching from John Kaufman and Brad Wilkerson.
"I was very pleased it was a good show. Certainly, we're disappointed we lost."
The Seminoles were also losers in 11 of their last 14 CWS games and are just 1-7 against Florida in post-season play, including a humbling 5-0 loss that ousted FSU from the 1991 CWS.
FSU must win against Wichita State at 7:30 p.m. Monday if it is to make it to a third game.
The College World Series is two four-team double-elimination tournaments with the winners playing in a one-game championship on Saturday.
Florida coach Andy Lopez will attempt to extend his CWS record to 6-0 in a game between unbeatens in Monday's 2:35 p.m. game against LSU. Lopez took Pepperdine to the CWS title in 1993.
Lopez has Wilkerson to thank for his streak remaining intact.
"He's quite a young man," Lopez said. "I'm excited about having him in our program,"
No doubt. An inning after his grand slam, Wilkerson saved the day for Florida on the mound. In relief of a tiring Kaufman (11-4), Wilkerson got Morris looking on a bases-loaded, two-out fastball on the outside corner.
But after giving up a looping single to left by Mark Ellis, he then threw two wild pitches to allow Ellis to third. Ellis scored on Chuck Hazzard's sacrifice fly to make it 2-1, FSU.
"It was probably the first time all year he struggled like that," Martin said. "I've never this year seen him mislocate like he did."
Choate's problems continued in the seventh with two more wild pitches and two more walks before being replaced by Chuck Howell.
"There was not really anything I could pinpoint," Choate said. "I couldn't place it. When he (Martin) came out there and said I didn't look like Randy Choate and to tell you the truth I didn't feel like Randy Choate.
"I can't really tell you what happened today. I lost it."
Howell immediately walked Ellis to load the bases. Martin then made a move that may long be second-guessed. Instead of staying with the experienced Howell or going to Chris Chavez, who pitched well in the regionals and eventually shut Florida down in the ninth, Martin turned to lefty freshman Zach Diaz. Three pitches into his appearance, Diaz threw a hanging changeup that was hammered by the lefthanded Wilkerson.
"If (Howell) had thrown the slider with any effectiveness he would have stayed in the ball game and it just dictated we go with the lefty," Martin said.
In contrast to FSU pitchers, Kaufman had a wobbly start but allowed just five hits and five walks before departing with two out in the eighth inning.
With a strategy that mirrored his first appearance against FSU on April 9, Kaufman tried to beat FSU early with a fastball.
That wasn't the plan this time, but when his curveball failed him, Kaufman had little choice until finally finding a groove in the middle and late innings. Kaufman allowed just three hits after the second inning.
"He was throwing strikes all day and just getting people out," said FSU designated hitter Scooby Morgan, who likely will be the starting pitcher on Monday. "What more can I say?"
In that second inning, FSU took advantage of Kaufman's location problems with two runs but came close to getting a lot more. Scooby Morgan hit a rocket that just went foul. And an inning-ending hit by Brooks Badeaux sent outfielder Wilkerson to the right-field wall to make the catch.
In between, FSU picked up a double by Scott Zech and an RBI single by Steve Nedeau.
Kaufman followed Nedeua's hit by walking Jose Salazar and giving up a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to Matt Woodward as FSU went ahead 2-0.
That's how it stood until the sixth inning, although J.D. Drew came close to hitting a record fifth career CWS homer in the top of the inning. Wilkerson survived a collision with center fielder Chris Chism to grab Drew's shot at the wall.

FSU survives to face Florida again.
The Seminoles rally late to beat Wichita State 8-4 on Monday at the College World
Series.
By Steve Ellis
OMAHA, NE - Florida State's trip of no expectations still has a tomorrow in the College World Series, and it will come tonight against rival Florida.
The Seminoles avoided the quickest possible departure from the College World Series on Monday night by finally looking like the team that breezed through the West Regional.
That transformation came late, but not too late, in an explosive five-hit, five-run eighth inning as No. 7 seed FSU swamped Wichita State 8-4 before 20,251 at Rosenblatt Stadium.
FSU used two perfect bunts against Shockers relief ace Braden Looper to load the bases and Scooby Morgan walked to start the Seminoles' big eighth. Jeremiah Klosterman and J.D. Drew keyed the inning with two-run hits as FSU went ahead 8-3. It was Looper's first blown save, first loss and first time taken out of a game in 54 innings this season. He gave up six hits and six runs in 1 2/3 innings after entering the game with an ERA of 1.17.
"There were so many big plays in the eighth, when we were behind 3-1 and Looper came in, something had to happen and it did," FSU coach Mike Martin said. "There was no question that eighth inning went our way."
FSU then survived a scary ninth inning in which Wichita State scored one run and loaded the bases with no outs before FSU ace Randy Choate made up for his Saturday effort against the Gators and did what Stephen Neill and Mike Davis could not. Choate struck out the side to end the game.
"Chip Baker told me before the game it was time for me to show my old confidence," Choate said. "I wanted to show the way I played Saturday was a fluke." Choate gave up a game-losing grand slam against Florida on Saturday.
The Seminoles parlayed 14 hits and clutch relief pitching into a third-game appearance for the fourth straight time in the CWS. FSU now will try to make it to a fourth game for the first time since 1986.
Chuck Howell (9-2, 3.27 ERA) will start for FSU tonight at 7:30 again Florida's Tommy Bond (3-0, 3.43). Today's winner will face unbeaten LSU on Thursday.
Randy Niles (4-1) threw a perfect eighth inning to get the win.
"We just didn't play very well tonight," said Wichita State coach Gene Stephenson. "We got good pitching but didn't play very well and didn't get good bullpen,"

Florida takes advantage of three early FSU errors.
FSU's season ends after three College World Series games.
By Steve Ellis
OMAHA, NE - It is not true Omaha in Seminole means three and out.
It just seems that way.
Florida State, for the fourth consecutive time, has been eliminated from the College World Series in three games. This may have been the most unkindest exit yet with Florida showing FSU the door, 6-3.
The Gators (50-17) used their fourth consecutive victory over FSU this season, a first in the two schools' long competitive history, to remain alive in the double elimination tournament. The No. 2 seed Gators will play LSU, a 9-4 winner over Florida in the second round, on Thursday at 7:35 p.m.
No. 7 seed FSU (52-17) goes home with 19-30 series record, and an 11-18 mark under Mike Martin and the dubious distinction of holding the CWS record for fifth place finishes with seven. The Seminoles tied Alabama for fifth place this year and failed to make a fourth game for the seventh time since 1986.
The Gators were partly responsible for FSU's quick exit in two games during the 1993 CWS.
But true to his promise, Martin left any disappointment behind in Rosenblatt Stadium - a place few expected FSU to reach this season.
"In all honesty, for me, it's a very proud time for me," Martin said. "I can't say enough about the accomplishments of the 1996 Seminoles.
"It's a year I'll never forget."
Seminole highlights were limited to J.D. Drew's two-RBI homer in the eighth that cut Florida's lead to 5-3 and the relief pitching of Chris Chavez. For the sophomore Drew, it was his fifth career CWS homer, a record, and 21st this season. That was FSU's last gasp as Scooby Morgan struck out to end the inning with a runner on second and Florida reliever Paul Rigdon shut down FSU in the ninth. The Gators added one run in the ninth behind John Tamargo's RBI-triple.
Chavez mostly quieted Florida in yet another outstanding relief effort during the postseason. Florida got to the redshirted freshman just twice for a single run in the fifth and eighth inning.
"Chris Chavez will more than likely open next year as one of our top three pitchers," Martin said. "We will not use him in relief."
Familiar CWS woes for FSU - starting pitching and poor run-production, hurt the Seminoles. Chuck Howell (9-3), who has been nearly unbeatable as a reliever but shakey as a starter this season, lasted just 2 1/3 innings. Florida rocked him for six hits and four earned runs.
In surprising contrast, lightly-used Tommy Bond (4-0) limited Florida State to four hits in the first seven innings while retiring 12 Seminole batters in a row at one point before departing in the eighth. FSU produced just 10 hits and only three extra-base hits in the two games against Florida here.
"We just got hold of the wrong guy tonight," Martin said. "I have never seen (Bond) pitch that well. We had a chance there in the eighth."
The Gators countered with 17 hits but used a new cast on Tuesday. Florida freshman sensation Brad Wilkerson didn't play hero as he did against FSU on Saturday when he ripped a Zach Diaz' changeup for a game-winning grand slam.
Wilkerson left that to Chuck Hazzard.
The Gators' designated hitter put Florida ahead 2-0 on his first homer in the first inning after teammate David Eckstein scored from third base when Chuck Howell found nobody home when he tried to pick off Eckstein. Eckstein, who opened the inning with a walk, reached third on his 34th stolen base this season and a throwing error by FSU catcher Jeremy Salazar.
Hazzard made it 4-0 to help chase starter Chuck Howell (9-3) in the third inning.
Eric Castaldo's RBI-single in the fifth inning put the Gators up 5-1 after Jeremy Morris scored FSU's lone run in the first on Scott Zech's bunt. That Gator run was the first run allowed by Chavez in his last eight appearances. Also in that inning, Wilkerson's double was the first hit given up by Chavez in 8 1/3 innings.
