Howser to manage Yanks.
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Dick Howser, baseball coach for Florida State University, was named to manage the New Your Yankees Sunday night.
Howser was given the manager’s job after Billy Martin, fresh from nother of his celebrated controversies, was fired from the post.
The Yankees’ announcement Sunday stated that Howser “has agreed to a multi-year contract to manage the Yankees effective immediately.”
“Dick will fly to New York from his Tallahassee home to be introduced to the press Thursday,” said a Yankees’ official.
Howser told reporters that he was on the field with his Florida State team Saturday when he got a call from George Steinbrenner, the Yankees’ owner, that there was a possibility the Yankees were going to make a change.
“Of course, I was surprised,” he said. “Then Steinbrenner said, ‘Would you be interested?’ I sasid, ‘Yes, that’s a possibility.’”
Howser said that he then flew to Ocala, where Steinbrenner has a horse farm. He said they agreed to terms there.
Although Howser had settled in the Tallahassee area to get out f the major league limelight, he commented Sunday:
“It would be hard for anyone to turn down the New York Yankees’ managing job, especially when you’ve been part of the organization for 12 years.
“I’m a Yankee. I know the players fairly well. I read the box scores every day this summer and tried to follow the team very closely. Even if I hadn’t taken this job, 20 years down the line I’d still be keeping up with the New York Yankees.”
It is the second time n his stormy career that Martin has parted ways with the always news-making Yankees. In the middle of the 1978 season, Martin bid a tearful and bitter farewell after a series of problems both with management and superstar Reggie Jackson.
However, Steinbrenner shocked the baseball world less than a week later by announcing that Martin would be back in 1980. He made the disclosure in a dramatic announcement at an oldtimers’ game in Yankee Stadium.
It didn’t take Martin quite that long to get back on the job, however. When the Yankees began to fail under phlegmatic Bob Lemon this past season, Martin assumed the job again as Steinbrenner hoped to fire up the team.
Florida State hired Howser away from the Yankees at the end of the 1978 major league season to succeed Woody Woodward, who rejoined the Cincinnati Reds’ organization. Howser’s starting salary at FSU was $25,000 – less than he made with the Yankees – but he said he was ready to leave the big-league lifestyle behind.
“I’ve been in professional baseball for 18 seasons as a coach,” Howser said the day FSU hired him. “A lot of people are concerned about my leaving the glamorous life. I’m not concerned…Baseball has always been good to me, and I hope to do some things to benefit Florida State.”
Steinbrenner said then he was sorry to see Howser go.
“We are sorry to be losing a person of Dick’s caliber, but yet are very happy for him,” the Yankees’ owner said in 1978. “It is a good opportunity and now he is going to be living at home. Florida State is gaining a great baseball man.”
Before his hiring by FSU was made official in 1978, Howser said in an interview with The Democrat from his New Jersey home that he didn’t want a big-league managing job.
“If I wanted a major league job, I could have stayed here and politicked for it,” he said then. “I know a lot of people are saying that I’ll just stay two or three years and then try to get back in the majors, but I honestly say that I would make an eight- or 10- or 15-year commitment out of it.
“There are lots of reasons. I live in Tallahassee, but I don’t care to live there for four months, then go to Fort Lauderdale (spring training) for six weeks, and then live in New Jersey and travel with the team.”
Howser, a 1954 graduate of the old Palm Beach High School in West Palm Beach, was an All-American shortstop at FSU in 1957 and 1958. He signed with the old Kansas City Athletics for a $21,000 bonus after graduating in 1958 with an education degree.
He then spent three seasons in the minor leagues before joining the Athletics in 1961. That year, he made the American League All-Star team and was named Rookie of the Year by Sporting News. His batting average was .280.
Howser was traded to Cleveland in 1963 and to the Yankees in 1966. He retired in 1968 with a lifetime batting average of .248. He remained with the Yankees as third-base coach until moving back to FSU last year.
Over the years, with his long history of fighting, the trigger-tempered Martin has caused the Yankees no end of embarrassment. After he was involved in a fight with a sports writer in Reno, Nev., in November 1978, Steinbrenner handed down an ultimatum that Martin would only return to the Yankees if he “were on his best behavior.”
He was relatively fight-free in 1979, although he had personality conflicts with Jackson in a continuing clash of monumental egos. Failing to inspire the Yankees to a fourth straight American League pennant, Martin finished out a desultory season in New York. His two-time World Series champions, saddled with injuries, finished a poor fourth in the American League’s East Division.
Less than a month after the season, Martin then made some news of his own in Bloomington, Minn., when he was accused of punching an Illinois man in a hotel. Martin denied that he hit the man, who received more than 15 stitches to close wounds on his face.
“I’m not a violent person,” Martin said after the incident, but his history would seem to belie that.
As a feisty, little second baseman with the Yankees in the 1950s, Martin was at the center of many a diamond brawl. His penchant for fist-fighting continued when he left the field and assumed the managerial chair.
His temper got him into trouble everywhere he managed – and,
though his teams usually were successful, his relations with management were not.
Martin gets Florida State baseball post.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The second time around was much better for Mike Martin.
Friday, Martin became the eighth head baseball coach in Florida State history, succeeding Dick Howser, who resigned a month ago to become manager of the New York Yankees.
It was Howser who last year got the job Martin wanted, after then-head coach Woody Woodward left FSU for an executive position with the Cincinnati Reds. Martin had been Woodward’s assistant for four years – he also remained with Howser – and he admitted disappointment at not being chosen.
But that became ancient history Friday. Martin wore a broad smile after being notified by Florida State President Bernie Sliger at 3:20 p.m.
Sliger called collect from Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta, where he was en route to a commencement address in Tennessee.
“He said I was chosen for two reasons,” Martin said. “One was for my baseball ability and two, because of the character I’ve displayed in the last five years I’ve been at Florida State.”
It was “the second greatest day in my life,” Martin said. “The greatest was a four-way tie – the day I married Carol and the days my three children were born.”
Sliger’s call followed by more than three hours a unanimous decision by a baseball selection committee to recommend Martin to the president.
The third baseball coach at FSU in three years, Martin indicated he planned to remain at his post longer than his predecessors.
“They both played at the major league level,” Martin said. Then, kiddingly, he added, “I assure you, that even if an offer comes from Mankato, Minn., I will not leave.”
Mankato was one of Martin’s stops in a three-year minor league baseball career following his graduation from FSU in 1966.
In a more serious light, Martin said, “I have no intention of ever leaving Florida State.”
Martin also mentioned the new house he has built in Tallahassee as a sign of his plans to remain. It was pointed out that Howser had just bought a house here when he became coach.
“Well, Carol (his wife) and I built ours,” joked Martin. “We’ve got more sweat in it.”
The 35-year-old Martin is known as an easy-going, good-humored fellow, who relates well to the players. He was the chief recruiter for four years under Woodward, and he has coached the FSU summer baseball program since its formation five years ago.
He also helped organize the Woody Woodward Baseball Camp, which assumed Martin’s name last summer.
The interim coach for the last month, Martin was working on the 1980 schedule when he was notified. The slate of games includes a season-opening three-game series at Miami Feb. 22-24, and a visit by the New York Yankees March 28 at 1 p.m.
The assistant coach will be named after a three-week waiting period from the time of the vacancy is announced Thursday. There is a selection committee for that post, too, but Martin basically will have the final word.
As head coach, Martin will earn more than $26,675, the salary Howser was paid last year. Martin’s assistant coach’s salary this year is $17,600.
By assuming head coaching duties, Martin will give up his teaching responsibilities. He has been instructing three classes in FSU’s Department of Movement Science and Physical Education.
Martin is a native of Charlotte, N.C., and attended Wingate Junior College, Wingate, N.C., before transferring to Florida State.
He played for the baseball team in 1965 and 1966 under Danny Litwhiler, and was drafted by the New York Mets. He later was traded to the Detroit Tigers’ organization.
In addition to his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from FSU, Martin holds a master’s degree in Administration and Supervision from Florida A&M.

Early runs by Hawaii stop FSU.
OMAHA, NE – Hawaii pushed home three runs in the first inning and four in the second Friday noght, then held off persistent Florida State for a 7-6 victory in the first round of the College World Series.
The win sends the Seminoles into the loser’s –bracket game this afternoon at 2 p.m. (EDT) against powerful Arizona, upset 6-1 by St. John’s of New York in Friday’s first game.
Mike Fuentes provided an early bright moment for the Seminoles. The junior center fielder hit his 21st home run of the season with none on in the top of the first inning to give FSU a short-lived 1-0 lead. The hit tied Terry Kennedy’s 1977 school record for homers in a season.
The Rainbows struck back quickly, with some help from the Seminoles. Rick Bass hit Hatcher’s first pitch into the right field corner for a double. Thad Reece bunted to third baseman Rick Figueredo, but first baseman Jeff Ledbetter dropped the throw and all hands were safe.
Hatcher fanned Collin Tanabe, but with Jay Erdahl at the plate, Hatcher’s pick-off throw got by Ledbetter for the first baseman’s second error. Bass scored, tying the game, 1-1.
Reece then singled and Greg Oniate walked to load the bases. Catcher Craig Ramsey gave temporary help by picking off Oniate, but Kimo Perkins tripled to right field, scoring two runs for a 3-1 Hawaii lead.
The Seminoles could do nothing with Crim in the second inning, going down in order. Then Hawaii went back to work, with FSU making life easy for the islanders.
With one out, Eric Rokunaga singled off Hatcher’s glove. Bass hit a perfect double-play ball to third. Figueredo gobbled the grounder and relayed to Martinez covering second, but the ball flew past him for the Seminoles’ third error in two innings.
Instead of the side being retired, Hatcher was in a jam, with runners on first and third with one out. After Reece grounded out, Tanabe singled past a diving Martinez, to score Tokunaga. Erdhal singled for one-run and Oniate doubled for two more. Hawaii led 7-1 after the four unearned runs in the second.
FSU mounted a threat in the third when, with one out, Figueredo walked and Martinez singled. But DeLoach and Fuentes each grounded out to kill the inning.
Hatcher held the Rainbows without a run for the first time in the bottom of the third inning. In the top of the fourth, the Seminoles again put runners on first and second with one out. Again, the rally died. Craig Ramsey popped out and Mike Cullen struck out.
Hawaii failed to score off Hatcher in the fourth inning, and Crim retired FSU in order in the top of the fifth.
It was Hawaii’s turn to leave runners on in the fifth. After one-out singles by Perkins and Howard Dashefsky, Hatcher got Bass and Reece to fly out to right field.
After being held runless by Crim for four innings, the Seminoles scored three in the sixth. Fuentes led off with a double and Ledbetter flied to center field, sending Fuentes to third.
Mike Yastrzemski singled home Fuentes, and Jim Weaver singled, sending Yaz to third.
Ramsey then lofted a deep fly ball to left, that would have been out of Seminole Field. It was caught by Erdhal, but it scored Yaz with the third FSU run.
With Cullen at bat, Waever stole second and went to third when the throw by catcher Tanabe sailed into center field. Cullen promptly singled to center, scoring Weaver and cutting the Hawaii lead to 7-4. Figueredo hit into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.
Freshman David Smalley came in to relieve Hatcher in the bottom of the sixth, and he retired the Rainbows in order.
The Seminoles added single runs in the top of the seventh and the top of the ninth, but a diving catch by the Rainbows’ Rick Bass in right-center field robbed Jim Weaver of a two-out hit with two men on in the ninth and shattered Florida State’s last-gasp comeback bid.

Arizona bumps FSU from Series.
OMAHA, NE – Mike Martin is a fatalist, with some reservations.
“I believe that if you’re supposed to win, you will win,” he said.
Then he added, “If you do what you’re supposed to do.”
Martin’s Florida State baseball team did little of what it was supposed to do Saturday at Rosenblatt Stadium. The result was a 5-3 defeat to Arizona and the dubious distinction of being the first team eliminated from the College World Series.
FSU, which ended its season with a 51-12 record, suffered its first defeat of the tournament Friday night, losing 7-6 to Hawaii. Arizona, a loser to St. John’s on Friday, is 41-21-1.
A two-hour rain delay in the middle of the third inning prolonged the Seminoles’ agony Saturday. Their chances came often; they capitalized seldom.
After the game, some of the players complained about not getting the breaks. They spoke of Don DeLoach’s double in the bottom of the ninth with two out and a runner on first base. The hit missed clearing the wall – and tying the game – by three feet.
It did, however, put the tying runs on second and third with Mike Fuentes at the plate. Fuentes, the Seminoles’ closest approach to a superstar, had been named to the All-American team earlier in the day. But he took a called strike from relief pitcher Greg Bargar to end the game.
“It was right over the outside corner,” Fuentes said. “He blew it by me.”
Victory might have been made possible at any of a half-dozen moments. But, as Martin said, “It wasn’t in the cards.”
Craig Ramsey was left at third base in the fourth inning. Jack Emerick and DeLoach were stranded in the fifth. The bases were loaded when the eighth inning ended. And then there was the ninth, with Rick Figueredo dancing off third and DeLoach on second, when Fuentes struck out.
“We had our chances the whole tournament,” DeLoach said. “Things just didn’t happen. I don’t know how to explain it. We didn’t come through.”
But things sis happen, to the Seminoles. Strange things, and they hurt.
In the bottom of the third, Chuck Crist led off with a double off FSU starter Ken Fischer, who pitched the eight innings. Dan Hyman then hit a single that took a weird hop over Figueredo, playing third base. The runners were content to hold at first and third, but Crist scored when Jim Weaver’s relay throw from left field bounced away from Figueredo.
That gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead, but wait. A sacrifice sent Hyman to third base and from there he scored on John Moses’ sacrifice fly. FSU trailed 3-0.
DeLoach led off the fourth by reaching base on an error. On ball three to Fuentes, the normally alert DeLoach was strolling back to first base when Hyman, the catcher, picked him off.
“I just got caught daydreaming,” DeLoach said.
We don’t know what might have happened. We do know that Fuentes walked and Weaver sliced a two-run homer that barely cleared the 343-foot sign on the leftfield wall. That made it 3-2.
In the fifth inning, Hyman hit a single with one out, Dwight Taylor hit into a force play and Moses walked, putting runners on first and second with two out.
Terry Francona, another All-American who hit a solo homer in the first, lofted a fly ball to right field. Mike Yastrzmeski went for it, had it lined up, then lost it in the sun. The ball fell for a double, two runs scored and Arizona led 5-2.
“I had a good jump on the ball but I lost it,” said Yastrzmeski, a freshman. “I had a perfect jump. It was cake.”
It was also the game. Though the Wildcats did no further damage against Fischer and Ken Smith, who pitched in the ninth, the Seminoles couldn’t produce the big outburst of runs that so typified their season.
The potentially golden moment came in the eighth inning. Lionel Martinez led off with a walk and advanced to third on two passed balls.
The DeLoach walked and Arizona freshman left-hander Ed Vosberg was lifted despite having allowed just three hits.
Martinez scored on Fuentes’ sacrifice fly off reliever Ron Sismondo. The catch was made in short center field by Moses, who fought the wind-buffeted ball and fell as he caught it. Trying to double DeLoach off first, Moses made a poor throw that sailed over first base, enabling DeLoach to take second.
Weaver, the next hitter, singled sharply, sending DeLoach to third. Then Weaver stole second.
The tying runs were now in scoring position, Ramsey at the plate. The catcher worked to 3-and-2 and on Sismondo’s next delivery, Ramsey checked his swing on a high, inside pitch. After a split-second delay, plate umpire Tony Patch called Ramsey out, ruling that the ball had hit his bat and was caught by Hyman behind the plate.
A foul tip with two strikes is a strikeout.
Ramsey howled and Martin charged from the third-base coach’s box, but to no avail. Ramsey afterward said the ball never struck his bat. “As far as I know it didn’t,” he said. “No way. But the umpire said he heard something.”
There now were two out and a base open. Yastrzmeski walked to load the bases and Sismondo got Jeff Ledbetter to fly out to center field.
It was a rough day and a rough series for Ledbetter, the sophomore first baseman. After going 1-for-5 with two errors against Hawaii, Led better three times made the final out of the inning, with a total of five runners aboard, against Arizona.
This was the Seminoles’ first appearance in the College World Series since 1975, when they also lost in two straight.
“I tell you what, we were not the eighth-place team in the tournament,” Martin said. “And I’ll tell you this. We won’t be another five years getting here.”
