Stallings Resigns FSU Post.
Jack Stallings, Florida State's baseball coach since 1969, announced today he is resigning effective Sept. 1.
A search for Stallings' replacement begins immediately, according to FSU athletic director John Bridgers.
"My plans are uncertain at this time," Stallings said in a prepared statement issued by the university. "There is a possibility I may get out of coaching and devote full time to teaching.
"I have been thinking about this decision for some time. After 15 years as a head coach I would like to be able to spend more time with my family.
"I have enjoyed my association with Florida State athletics and Tallahassee," Stallings continued in the statement, and I would like to continue to live here."
Stallings' records at FSU were 38-13-1, 49-9-1, 41-16, 45-23, 38-21, and 37-25. They totaled to a 248-107-2 record for six seasons and a winning percentage of .695.
In his second season, he guided the Seminoles to the NCAA finals where they lost to Southern Cal 2-1 in 15 innings.
"We are certainly sorry to see Jack Stallings leave as Florida State's head coach," Bridgers said in a prepared statement. "He's had an outstanding record both on and off the field. He's a gentleman in every sense of the word. It is my hope that if he gets out of the coaching field, he chooses to remain with the university."
Stallings was the fifth FSU baseball coach, taking over for Fred Hatfield who returned to pro ball.
Stallings came to Florida State from Wake Forest where in nine years he led the Deacons to a 152-109-2 record, including two conference championships. On both occasions, he carried the Deacons to the District III championship and the college world series.
Florida State's 25 losses last spring broke the seasonal record for most losses - 23 in 1972. The Seminoles' schedule has grown longer and tougher each season, and the chances of getting an
NCAA District III berth tougher. Teams such as Miami, Jacksonville, Alabama, Georgia Southern and South Carolina began building their baseball programs and Florida State had to start sharing the
spotlight.
Florida State Makes 'A Logical Choice' For Baseball.
Announced yesterday as Florida State's new head baseball coach, Woody Woodward hopes to give the Seminoles more major-league association.
He said some major-league players and coaches will come down for fall practice. Others have promised to drop in en route to downstate bases for spring training.
One of the school's more illustrious and popular alumni, Woodward has maintained exceptionally close ties with his alma mater. His selection was no surprise, on the heels of Jack Stallings' resignation three weeks ago.
Upon graduation from Florida State in '63, Woodward was signed to a bonus contract by the Milwaukee Braves. Shortly after he donated a portion of that bonus, reportedly $3,000, to Florida State for the purpose of helping construct lights for night baseball.
Though he played in the majors for nine years, the 31-year-old Woodward, in a sense, "never left home." His off-season residence was here most of the time he was in the majors.
Woodward retired from pro baseball following the '71 season to accept a position here with the Winewood Corporation as a vice-president. Earlier this year he divested himself of his interests in the firm. This summer he has commuted to selected Cincinnati Reds games to serve as a color commentator on telecasts.
"I realize," said Woodward yesterday, "that Florida State has had an honorable past under such outstanding coaches as Danny Litwhiler, Fred Hatfield and Jack Stallings, and I intend to continue that tradition.
"I'm glad to be back in baseball, especially at the university level.
"I think my professional contacts and experience will be helpful to our program."
During his playing days in Atlanta, Woodward ranked with the fans as one of the more popular Braves. Teammates at Cincinnati thought enough of him to elect him their player representative all four years he was with the club.
He enrolled at Florida State in '60, out of Coral Gables High. In '62 and '63 he led the Seminoles into the College World Series. He was an All-American shortstop (first team) in '63.
In the summer of '63, after he signed that bonus contract, Milwaukee sent him to its triple-A farm team at Denver, but in September be was with the big club.
When the Braves franchise was switched to Atlanta in '66 Woodward went along. In '68 Atlanta traded him to Cincinnati, where he remained for the rest of his major-league days.
His best seasons were '66 when he hit .269 in 142 games, and '67 when he led all National League second basemen in fielding. He also played shortstop and third during his major-league career, but most he was a second baseman.
"My biggest thrill in my pro career," recalled Woodward, "was starting at second base for the Reds against Baltimore in the 1970 World Series."
His local involvement has included the operation of the Woody Woodward Baseball Camp each summer for several years, in conjunction with the Tallahassee Recreation Dept.
For years Florida State reigned as the No. 1 college baseball, and one of the very best in the country.
Thirteen times in the past 18 years Florida State was good enough to earn an invitation to the district playoffs. Five times Florida State won the district title, earning the right to compete in the College World Series at Omaha. More than a dozen Seminoles received All-American acclaim, though relatively few among them were first-team choices. Several grads have gone on to play in the majors.
Stallings became head coach in '69, the Seminoles hiring him away from Wake Forest. In his second season, Stallings guided the team through perhaps its most successful season ever: the record was 29-9-1, with the Seminoles falling 2-1 to Southern Cal in a memorable 15-inning game for the championship of the College World Series.
But in the last four seasons the Seminoles started slipping from their lofty perch. Only once in that time ('72) was Florida State invited to the district playoffs.
Florida State's competition within the district had become tougher. Strong new teams, like South Alabama and Jacksonville U., became factors. Where once Florida State had to beat out only two or three teams to earn a district bid, it now has to beat out about nine.
Rather inevitably, some fans came to blame Stallings, who about three years ago had an element of his budget eliminated, making it no longer possible to arrange as advantageous scheduling.
Florida State officials three weeks ago asked Stallings for his resignation, and he immediately obliged. He remains at Florida State as a full-time instructor in physical education.
Stallings told some people several weeks ago, prior to his resignation, that should there be a change Woodward would be an "excellent choice" as his successor.
Equally inevitably, word circulated around town that Woodward was out to get Stallings' job for a long while.
The writer's strong opinion is there is no real basis to believe that Woodward so moved, that it simply is not the nature of the gentlemanly Woodward. Such rumors, in the writer's view, started because the fans seeking a change quickly put Woodward's name forward as the logical successor.
Woodward encouraged none of it, the writer believes. He is said to be personally embarrassed by all the talk.
The truth seems to be that if there was to be a change, Woodward was, in fact, the logical choice.

OMAHA, NE - Two 10th inning errors by Florida State lifted Eastern Michigan to a 2-1 upset victory late Saturday night here in the first round of the College World Series.
The Seminoles now will play a losers bracket game this afternoon against Seton Hall. Eastern Michigan will oppose South Carolina tonight.

FSU Elimianted.
Fantastic season suddenly comes to an end.
OMAHA, NE - Florida State coach Woody Woodward put his finger on the problem, but the cause for the Seminoles' collapse in the 29th annual College World Series remains as much a mystery for him as it does everyone else.
"It was a case of getting out-played," he said after the humiliating 11-0 elimination loss to Seton Hall here Sunday afternoon. "But I have no idea why we played so poorly … I just cannot pinpoint it at this time."
Woodward, like most observers, had trouble believing what he was seeing - the Seminoles coming apart before his very eyes.
In 19 innings here, including the 2-1 opening round loss to Eastern Michigan Saturday night, the Seminoles scored just one run, got just 13 hits, committed five errors and stole just one base, while the seven pitchers were raked for 13 runs, 21 hits and 14 walks.
"I'm not proud of the way we played here," Woodward said, "but I am proud of the way we played to get here.
"When you play the way we did here," he went on, "you can't expect to win. … We didn't even show the people here we knew how to play. … I'm sorry about it … and it's sad to end it this way after such a fantastic season."
Woodward, gracefully, tried to take a major share of the blame for the collapse.
"We were a flat ball club here," he observed, "and it's the coaches job to see that it doesn't happen."
It was a shock all around. The Seminoles had come into the tournament ranked No. 1 in the country and figured to be a very serious contender for the championship that eluded them here five years ago in the 2-1, 15-inning loss to Southern Cal in the championship game.
But they were never a serious challenger in the Sunday elimination game, managing just six hits off knuckle-balling Todd Heimer, while the Northeast Region champions were pounding five Seminole Pitchers for a dozen hits and parlaying them with 12 base on balls to make a rout of it.
Starter Larry Jones, suffering his first pitching defeat in 16 decisions this season, lasted just three innings, giving up two runs, three hits, six walks, a hit batsman, a wild pitch and committing two throwing errors.
The Seminoles were never to recover, and a solo home run by Ted Schoenhaus in the third and a two-run roundtripper by catcher Rick Cerone in the sixth were the telling blows.
"Jones just wasn't on," Coach Woodward explained. "It was his poorest performance of the season."
Meanwhile, the Seminoles became the first team shut out in this season's national championship showdown, and the first to go scoreless in a game here since 1973. It was only the second shutout suffered this season by the Seminoles, who were blanked 2-0 in Miami by the Hurricanes early in the season.
The Seminoles had one of their untypical innings defensively in the second against Seton Hall, and that's all it would eventually take to do in the Tribe.
A walk, a bunt single and throwing error and a hit batsman loaded the sacks for the Pirates, and when Jones attempted to pickoff leadoff man Mike O'Conner off third, the ball slipped out of his hand and rolled unattended to the shortstop while O'Conner raced home.
After Schoenhaus' homer in the third, Seton Hall struck for another run in the fifth on two walks, a fielder's choice and an RBI single by O'Conner.
Cerone, who was the No. 7 choice in the recent major league draft, crashed his 14th homer of the season after Greg Jamison had singled with two out off reliever Larry Rothschild in the sixth.
Seton Hall, giving Region I its first CWS victory in five years, added three more runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings in turning the game into a rout.
FSU left seven baserunners stranded but got only one runner as far as third and had only three baserunners in the last five innings. The Seminoles were retired on three pitches in the sixth, and also went down in order in the eighth and ninth.
It all left the Seminoles with a final 49-10 record for the season and tied the school record for most victories in a season.
Jones, like Danny O'Brien Saturday night, finished the season with 15 victories and in an all-time tie with Gene Ammann for most victories in a season for the Seminoles.
Meanwhile, Woodward expressed and explained his mixed emotions about the season and the climax here.
"Back last October," he said, "I had no idea we'd be here and, of course, I'm very pleased and satisfied with our season as a whole.
"But," he continued, "once you get here and you have a chance to win it all, then, of course, it's all very disappointing if you don't win it all."
