TALLAHASSEE, FL - He appeared in 17 games this season, started 15 and completed 10. He won 15 games and did not lose, including two games in the College World Series. He pitched eight shutouts and the
first eight innings of a ninth early in the season. He had one string of 41 1/3 scoreless innings and another of 29.
He set at least a dozen school pitching records and led his team to second place in the College World Series where he was chosen "Most Outstanding Player."
Those are some of Gene Ammann's pitching accomplishments for 1970. But perhaps what is even more amazing is what he did not get - Ammann did not make All-America. He was not even nominated.
The Southeastern District III selection committee passed the Seminole junior over and placed him on the district second team. Only first team choices are considered for All-America recognition.
In three years of varsity performance, Ammann won a record 31 of 33 decisions. Among his other Florida State standards were lowest ERA (0.66 season and 1.43 career), career strikeouts (311), season
wins (15), and season shutouts (eight).
Ammann had another year of eligibility left, but elected to enter pro ball following his fine 1970 performance. He signed with the Milwaukee Brewers and will soon be assigned to the Jacksonville Suns
of the Southern League (AA).
"Gene is one of the finest pitchers in college ball," said Seminole Coach Jack Stallings. "He proved that beyond a doubt in Omaha. His selection as the Series' Outstanding Perfomer confirmed it."
In the Omaha tourney Ammann gave up just two runs against the two hardest hitting clubs in the tournament. He shutout Arizona on two hits and yielded a pair on seven hits to Texas.
"We will certainly miss Gene next season," said Stallings. "But I can't blame him for wanting to sign. The Brewers made him a fine offer.
"It is just a shame that he did not have a shot at All-America this year. It was about the only individual honor he did not get."
Ammann was just one of a bullpen full of Seminole pitchers who carried the Tribe into the finals of the College World Series.
Five hurdlers had ERA's below 2.00 with three below 1.00. Ammann's 0.66 was not the lowest. That honor was carried by big Tom Henson, who posted an 0.31 in 29 innings of work.
Lefty Pat Osburn, who set a season strikeout record with 154 (four more than recorded by Ammann) had an 0.92 mark, while compiling a 12-2 record.
As a team, the Seminoles set records for lowest ERA (1.49), strikeouts (528), shutouts (15) and lowest opponents batting average (.186).
Only three of the 10 regulars are seniors, but like Ammann, juniors Osburn and Mike Slade have been drafted and could sign. If they do, that will leave just four returning.
OMAHA, NE - Three hitters with .400 plus averages and two pitchers with brilliant records led the 1970 collegiate All-American baseball selections, announced Saturday. Florida State secnd baseman Dick
Nichols, a graduate of Jacksonville's Wolfson High, participating in the College World Series, was named to the seccond team.

OMAHA, NE, June 13, 1970 - The toughest thing Florida State had to overcome here Saturday was convincing the national press that its 4-0 conquest of Arizona was "routine".
"It was a typical game for us, really," Coach Jack Stallings explained to a somewhat awed press, which was taken in about as much as an impressed record crowd of 13,427.
Righthander Gene Ammann, who was chaulking up his eighth shutout in running his record to 14-0 on a two hitter, encountered the same difficulty that his coach did.
"Well," he said, "I think I've pitched better...well, if you consider it was against a team like Arizona, I guess not."
The win sent the Seminoles - and pitcher Pat Osburn (11-2) - into Sunday's 9 p.m. (EDT) winner's bracket game against Dartmouth, which upended Iowa State, 7-6. Earlier Saturday, No. 1 ranked Southern California rebounded from Friday's upset by Ohio University to eliminate Delaware, 12-4.
Later Ammann shook his head and said he may have pitched better on as many as three or four occasions this season.
On paper, his performance was impressive, and perhaps a bit misleading.
He gave up the two singles, in the fifth ans eighth innings, struck out 11, retired nine in a row over one stretch and 15 of the last 17 he faced.
It added up to Ammann's fourth straight shutout, running his scoreless innings pitched to 37.
But, as expected, Ammann had his troubles in the early innings, which he traced, as usual, to the long layoff (16 days).
"I didn't start throwing good until the fourth or fifth inning," he said. "I felt tight and a little weak in the first couple of innings.
"They (Arizona) were not as aggressive as I thought they would be," he added.
Ammann was in plenty of trouble, starting with the first inning when he loaded the bases on two walks after Ron Cash had booted a grounder for an error.
He got out of that jam by getting Jim Williams to ground out.
After retiring the side in order in the second, he got himself back in trouble by walking one and hitting another before Greg Gromeck, Dick Nichols and Doug Kasimier turned a double play to bail him out.
However, Ammann still had a no-hitter going until Dave Prest led off the fifth with a single that turned out to be no more than a spoiler.
He didn't allow another base runner until pinch-hitter Jerry Benson singled off Nichols' glove leading off the eighth.
Meanwhile, the Seminoles were making the most of eight hits, breaking up the double shutout in the fifth, getting two more in the sixth and another in the eighth.
"I was glad to see us win the way we did," Stallings said. "I'm not sure Arizona was everything they were cracked up to be...We've played a lot of teams as tough as them, and I think that's helping us here.
"We scattered a few hits through the lineup and took advantage of a few breaks," Stallings added. "Out here you've got to play your game and that is what we did."
The Seminoles were in form in scoring their first run. Kasimier led off with a single in the fifth. A sacrifice by Ammann moved him to second and he scored when Wildcat third baseman Willis Williams let Greg Schnute's ground ball through for an error.
FSU used a walk to Cash, his second of three free passes for the day, a single by Larry Cocks, a sacrifice fly by Harry Saferight and a ground out by Gromek to score two in the sixth.
Saferight drove in his second run of the day with a single, scoring Cocks, who had singled, with the run in the eighth.
"Give them (Arizona) a lot of credit for some big defensive plays," Stallings said. "Without them we'd have scored three or four more runs."
Stallings was referring to a pair of catches by right fielder Steve Mikulic, who robbed Gromek of a triple in the second on a running, over-the-head catch 370 feet away. He took a double away from Kasimier in the ninth with a backhand shoestring catch in the power alley.

OMAHA, NE, June 14, 1970 - Florida State University, behind the sparkling pitching of Pat Osburn, the hitting of Ron Cash and a flock of stolen bases, rolled over Dartmouth, 6-0, here Sunday night in the second round of the College World Series.
Osburn, hiking his record to 12-2, stymied the Ivy League champs on four harmless hits and struck out 14 in following teammate Gene Ammann in giving the Seminoles back-to-back shutout pitching performances in this 24th annual NCAA championship.
It just as easily could have been a no-hitter for the FSU junior left-hander. Two of the hits produced close plays at first base which evoked negative fan reaction.
FSU now plays Texas at 9 p.m. (Jacksonville time) Monday in a meeting of the tournament's only two remaining undefeated teams.
Mike Slade (7-1) will get the Seminoles pitching assignment.
In other action slated Monday, Iowa State (1-1) will tangle with Ohio University (1-1) and Southern Cal (1-1) will take on Dartmouth (1-1) in a pair of games in which the losers will be eliminated.
In Sunday's other action, Texas ran its record to 2-0 here by defeating Ohio University, 7-2, and Iowa State eliminated Arizona, 7-1.
Cash swung the big bat for the Seminoles in Sunday's wrapup of a tripleheader, driving home four runs with a single and a double.
Meanwhile, the Seminoles were a dazzling display on the basepaths, coming within one of tying their national NCAA tournament single game stolen base record with seven.
Dick Nichols from Jacksonville, John Grubb and Greg Gromeck swiped two each.
Osburn was unbeatable even though he had to survive a mildly shaky ninth inning when he gave up a bloop infield single and a bunt single with one out. However, he tightened up and struck out the next two.
During those last seven innings, he allowed only one ball to be hit out of the infield - a short fly to right on the fifth - and retired 20 men in a row.
He gave up a bunt single in the first inning and a one-out bloop single and a walk in the second.
However, a double play bailed him out of that mild jam and from then until the ninth it was like taking candy from a child.
Meanwhile, the Seminoles weren't exactly knocking the cover off the ball, getting only five hits off Dartmouth ace righthander Pete Broberg, who struck out 10.
Except for Cash's single and double, a pair of singles by Larry Cocks and an infield hit by Greg Schnute, Broberg turned in a highly creditable performance himself.
However, he was the victim of ultra-alert FSU base running and shaky field support by his teammates, who committed six errors.
FSU was in "typical form" in getting away to a fast start.
Larry Cocks led off the second inning with an infield single, stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored when Dartmouth center fielder Tom Hanna dropped Doug Kasimier's long fly for an error.
The Seminoles then erupted for their three runs in the third.
Nichols led off with a walk and stole second and third for his 33rd and 34th thefts of the year. He scored on catcher Wayne Young's second throwing error of the game.
Greg Schnute followed with an infield single, went to second on a wild pitch and on to third on a passed ball before Grubb walked and stole second to set the stage for Cash's two-run single to right.
Broberg finally got the side out only because the Seminoles had base runners available for force outs.
The lanky right-hander, however, got himself right back into trouble in the fourth.
He gave up walks to Nichols and Schnute to give Cash an opportunity to chase home two more runs with a towering double off the left field fence that came within a couple of feet of escaping the park at the 370-foot mark.

OMAHA, NE, June 15, 1970 - Florida State rammed smack into frustration and Texas righthanded ace Bert Hooten here Monday night and lost its first game in the College World Series, 5-1, and dropped into the losers bracket.
The Seminoles, putting runners on base in every inning but the ninth, left eight men stranded, and didn't avert a shutout until Ron Cash produced the lone run with a single in the eighth inning.
Meanwhile, the Longhorns clipped losing pitcher Mike Slade and his relief, John Ferguson, for 13 hits and bunched them superbly for a 3-run outburst in the sixth and single runs in the fifth and seventh.
Hooten, even though tagged for 10 hits by the Seminoles, was tough in the clutch, striking out 12 and walking none.
FSU will probably call on ace right-hander Gene Ammann in a bid to avert elimination in the 24th annual NCAA championships against Ohio University Tuesday at 6:30 PM (Jacksonville time).
Texas, now the only undefeated team in the tournament, meets Southern California in the second game in a matchup of the nation's No. 1 and No. 2 teams.
In earlier games Monday, No. 4-rated Ohio eliminated Iowa State, 9-6, and No. 1 Southern Cal sent Dartmouth home, 6-1.
Seminole center fielder Greg Schnute was knocked out of the game with a pulled ankle ligament while going into second base in the first inning. He was taken to the hospital but was back at the ball park in crutches late in the game.
Texas finally broke through on Slade in the fifth when back-to-back singles by John Langerhans and Pat Amos and an error by Dick Nichols loaded the bases to set the stage for Slade to walk Bagwell on a 3-1 pitch to force the run.
Texas padded its freshly acquired lead in the sixth with three more runs bunching singles by Hall, Miller, Langerhans and Hooten and an error by Harry Saferight, who dropped the ball putting the tag on Miller at the plate.
Chalk, Harmon and Hall laced three straight singles as the Longhorns pushed over another run in the seventh before Slade got out of the jam when Larry Cocks threw out Harmon at third and base runner Hall was hit by a batted ball.
With two out in the home half of the seventh, Nichols got his first tournament hit, but, as usual he was still standing on first when Porter struck out to end the inning.
John Ferguson, a right hander, replaced Slade for the Seminoles at the start of the eighth, gave up a hit to Amos, but got Hooten on a fly to left and struck out Markl.
The Seminoles finally broke the ice in the eighth when Grubb wound up on second on a two-base error by Texas first baseman Langerhans and rode home on Cash's single. Cocks then struck out after hitting the ball out of the park but foul by 20 feet.
Hooten then cleaned up the inning by striking out Saferight and getting Gromek to ground out.

OMAHA, NE, June 16, 1970 - If one can't throw a shutout, two can.
With that formula the Florida State Seminoles made sure here Tuesday that the sun will rise on them one more day in the College World Series.
Tom Henson and Mac Scarce, a couple of seldom called upon pitchers, stepped in and blanked Ohio University, 2-0, for the Seminoles' third whitewashing of the opposition in the 24th annual NCAA Championships.
"I can't say enough about Henson," a beaming Coach Jack Stallings said afterwards. "It's one of the great gut performances I've ever seen."
Henson, getting a chance to start because ace Gene Ammann didn't feel he was ready to work on only a three-day rotation, upped his record to 4-0 and lowered his club-leading earned run average to 0.31 in hurling the first seven and one-third innings.
Scarce, the fire-balling short relief specialist, cooled the hardest hitting team in the tournament the rest of the way, striking out four of the five men he faced.
The Seminoles didn't break through on ace Ed Rollins, who was strapped with only his first defeat in 15 decisions, until the eighth.
But, even if it was almost too late, the Seminoles, now with a 3-1 record here, find themselves in an enviable position in this double elimination tournament.
With Ammann and Pat Osburn back into regular rotation, FSU appeared to be in better pitching shape than the rest of the opposition.
Southern California defeated unbeaten Texas, 8-7 in 14 innings, in the second game Tuesday night.
In a coin toss following USC's win, the Trojans drew a bye into Thursday's final game. Texas and Florida State will meet at 9 p.m. (Jacksonville time) Wednesday.
"This was the big one today," Stallings said. "Now we can sit back and wait and see what happens."
He has Mr. Henson and Mr. Scarce to thank for that position.
"They gave a great performance," he said, "particularly Henson. As hot and muggy as it was and as big as he is, he just hung in there and kept battling."
Henson, a 6-3, 210-pound bear, had worked only two innings in the last seven weeks, and wasn't sure he would start until just before he left his motel room.
"We treat our players as men," Stallings said. "I asked Ammann how he felt and he said 'coach I feel a little stiff,' and that's all the decision I had to make."
Even at that, Henson surprised Stallings with his performance.
"He went longer than I had even hoped for," Stallings said. "Then Mac came in and did his usual job for us.
"But," he added, "I knew if he could hold them for six or seven innings, we could come in with Mac without any trouble."
The combination gave the Seminoles a record-equalling three shutouts in the tournament. The two previous feats were turned in by champions California in 1947 and Wake Forest in 1955, the year Stallings was an assistant coach of the Deacons.
Henson's performance was not an artistic masterpiece.
He allowed base runners in every inning he pitched, giving up five hits, four walks and hitting two batters.
But, two double plays and a sensational running backhand, shoestring catch by John Grubb in center kept the Bobcats off home plate.
The biggest OU threat of the day came in the eighth when, with one out, Mike Schmidt and Terry Raszka laced back-to-back singles to bring Scarce out of the bullpen.
The big lefthander responded by getting the first man to hit into a force out and then striking out Gary Shade, who had two of OU's five hits, to vault out of the jam.
The ninth was a breeze for the Richmond, Va. native, who retired the side on 13 pitches.
Meanwhile, the Seminoles were having their troubles with Robbins, who surrendered only a single to Dick Nichols in the third, another to Doug Kasimier that started the winning rally in the eighth, and a third to Ron Cash in the ninth.
After Doug's hit, Robbins walked Tom Porter on five pitches and the pair was advanced on a third-strike sacrifice bunt by Henson.
Then Nichols laid down a perfect bunt to plate Kasimier, with Porter scoring on a wild throw at the plate by OU first baseman Mike Hannah.
That's all the offensive power Henson and Scarce needed.

OMAHA, NE, June 17, 1970 - Florida State, switching from pitching to hitting to get the job done, bombed five Texas pitchers for 13 hits and an 11-2 victory here Wednesday night to eliminate the Longhorns and vault into the College World Series finale.
The Seminoles, displaying their most productive bats of the tournament, will meet Southern Cal at 9 p.m. (Jacksonville time) Thursday night for the national championship.
Lefty Pat Osburn, who hurled a four-hit shutout in winning one game here earlier, will take a 12-2 record and a 0.91 earned run average against the Trojans, who will be gunning for their sixth NCAA crown.
The Trojans will counter with sophomore righthander Greg Wideman, who has a 5-3 record and a 1.39 ERA. He defeated Delaware, 7-1, in the second round here.
A national final, for the second time this year, will match California and Florida schools in the showdown. Earlier in the year UCLA defeated Jacksonville for the basketball title.
Gene Ammann, who had his scoreless string of innings stopped at 41, picked up his 15th victory and became the winningest pitcher in college baseball this season.
Ammann was touched for seven hits, but the only big blow against the crafty right-hander was a two-run homer by relief pitcher Walt Rothe, who got a fast ball up into the strong wind and sailed it out at the 370-foot mark in right center in the fifth inning.
Ammann gave up four of his seven hits in that fifth inning, but was in complete control the rest of the time. He struck out seven and walked four.
However, pitching, as it had been in the Seminoles' other three victories here, was not the chief weapon in gaining the finals.
FSU's bats sung their sweetest tune against a Texas club that simply ran out of first-rate pitching.
James Street, the Longhorns' "Mister Clutch" of football fame, failed to survive the first inning against the Seminoles, who didn't have to swing a bat to chase the quarterback to the showers.
Street re-injured a groin muscle on the first pitch of the game and proceeded to walk the bases full before giving up to Rothe, who threw two more pitches to complete a walk to Greg Gromek to force in FSU's first run.
However, it was only a matter of time until the Seminoles brought out the singing bats. When it was all over, catcher Harry Saferight had chased home four runs with a pair of two-run singles, and John Grubb had driven in two more in going 4-4 at the plate.
The Seminoles bunched their 13 hits for a couple of big innings - scoring three times on four hits in the second and exploding for six more on five hits and a pair of errors in the seventh.
Despite the onslaught of hits, Dick Nichols, the second-baseman from Jacksonville-Wolfson, got the Seminoles' only extra base hit, a triple driving in a run in the third.
Nichols also singled in the second inning, breaking out of a batting slump that had even him worried here.
In addition to Saferight, Grubb and Nichols, two-hit performances were turned in by Doug Kasimier and Ammann, who bunted one run home and scored a pair.
The Seminoles biggest battering of Texas pitching came in the seventh, when relief specialist Natie Salazar came on and threw three pitches and gave up singles to Kasimier, Porter and Ammann. Salazar then walked Nichols on four pitches and followed his teammates to the showers.

OMAHA, NE, June 18, 1970 - Southern Cal won the College World Series here Thursday night, defeating Florida State, 2-1, on a bases loaded infield single by Frank Alfano.
Carl Gromek, working in relief, fielded Alfano's chopper to the right of the mound but slipped and fell with the ball permitting Cal Meier to cross the plate with the winning run in the 15th inning.
The Seminoles had scored an unearned run in the fifth when Tom Porter scampered home on a throwing error by Trojan pitcher Greg Widman. On the play, Florida State starter Pat Osburn's right knee collapsed running out a grounder.
John Ferguson, Mike Slade and Mac Scarce had followed Osburn to the mound.
Southern Cal tied the game in the seventh on a hit batsman and a walk off Ferguson and a single off Slade. Scarce came on to put out the fire and then retired the Trojans in order in the eighth.
Grubb got the Seminoles' first hit and his fifth straight in the tournament - a line drive to right - with two out in the first, but died on first when Ron Cash lifted a high fly to center.
Osburn gave up a one-out single to Cal Meier in the bottom of the first, but then struck out Dan Stologrosz and got Dave Kingman to pop up to Dick Nichols to end the inning.
Harry Saferight led off the Seminoles second with a single, but was wiped out on the front end of a double play on a ball hit to short by Greg Gromek. Doug Kasimier flew deep to right center, sending Russ Bennett back to the warning track 370-feet from home.
Frank Alfano led off the Trojans' second with a single to center and died when Grubb made the catch of the tournament on Craig Perkins' 400-foot shot which Grubb pulled down over his shoulder, crashed into the fence and held the ball. Osburn then struck out Mike Bell and got Bennett to ground out to Nichols.
Florida State got its run and lost its pitcher in the fifth. After two were out, Tom Porter singled to right and scored when Osburn hit a hopper back to the mound which Widman fielded and threw into right field permitting Porter to score from first. However, Osburn, running out the play, had his right knee collapse. He was carried from the field and to the locker room.
John Ferguson replaced Osburn on the mound in the fifth and gave up a one-out walk to Widman before getting Cross to ground out and Meier to fly to short center.
Southern Cal tied the game, 1-1, in the seventh after two were out. Jeff Port, pinch-hitting for Widman, was hit by a pitched ball. Ferguson then served up two balls to pinch-hitter Jeff Pedersen and left for reliever Mike Slade, who finished walking Pedersen and giving up a run-scoring single to Meier.
Coach Jack Stallings then waved in Mac Scarce, who then struck out Stoligrosz on four pitches to get out of the jam.
Jim Barr, ace of the Trojan staff, came on in the eighth and the hard-throwing right-hander set the Seminoles down in order in the eighth and ninth.
Scarce was doing the same to the Trojans as the game streaked into extra innings.
FSU got a mild threat started in the 10th when Tom Porter walked with one out and was sacrificed to second by Scarce. However, the Trojans got out of it with a strikeout.
The Seminoles got another base runner in the 11th when Cash singled with two out. Saferight's fly ball to left ended that bid.
Meanwhile, Scarce continued to sit the Trojans down in order, retiring 13 in a row after coming on in the seventh. Six Trojans had gone down swinging including two in the 11th after Scarce had got in a hole with 3-0 counts.
The Seminoles went down in order in both the 12th and 13th.
Editor's note: Carl Gromek had to relieve Mac Scarce in the 15th inning because Scarce had a blister on his index finger.
