OMAHA, NE - Luckless in the draw, Florida State's baseball team continued its battle in the College World Series.
Losers to Ohio State by 2 to 1 in the opening game Monday the Seminoles were scheduled to take on tournament-tough Texas at noon today.
If they lose, the Seminoles fly home Wednesday. If they win, they play at 3 o'clock tomorrow.
Texas, a 12-5 loser to Washington State Monday, is playing in this series for the 13th time. The Longhorns have twice won the national championship.
Florida State's chances of going all the way are now slim, but the odds are not precisely prohibitive. In three of the 18 previous series first-day losers went on to championships.
Another fact is that among the 18 previous champions all, save two, were beaten at one time or another during the tournament.
Florida State was unfortunate enough, however, to get lodged in the tournament's tougher bracket at the start. Ohio State is ranked number two in the nation, now stands 27-11 after eight consecutive victories.
Washington State and Texas, in the same bracket, with 31-6 and 18-5 records, rank 4th and 3rd in the land.
By contrast, Arizona State, the top rated team in the country, is in a bracket with St. Louis (No. 6), Lafayette (9) and Connecticut (13).
Texas finished the regular season with a team batting average of .300, and has a pitching staff with a collective earned run average of 2.55.
FSU's loss to Ohio State was primarily a case of too much Steve Arlin.
A sensational sophomore right-hander, the 6-3 Arlin, restricted Florida State to four hits as he won his 12th game of the year. He has lost just one.
Fastballer Arlin's control was splendid. He walked just four. Rosenblatt Stadium is a pitcher's park, all the way. It's 343 feet down each foul line. Only one home run was struck in all of the games of last year's series here.
The Seminoles got fairly good wood from Arlin's pitches. He managed 136 strikeouts in 115 previous innings. He fanned just 7 Seminoles.
But Ohio State's errorless fielding was too much when coupled with Arlin. A relatively light-hitting team, Ohio State finished 9th in Big Ten team hitting, but was second in the league in both pitching and stealing.
The Buckeyes got both runs in the fourth inning. Chuck Brinkman lashed a double down the left field line. After two outs, Jim Graham singled to left, scoring Brinkman. Jim Reed walked. Bo Rein singled to right, and Graham scored.
Lefthander Marvin Stringfellow went the distance for FSU. Rapped for 11 hits, Stringfellow, now 7 and 4, was in frequent trouble but pitched out of it, save for that fourth frame.
Tom Thomas made a big catch of a hard-hit ball in right field with a run on base in the second. Ohio State got its first two batters on base in the third, but Stringfellow worked through safely. Pete Sarron made a fine catch of a ball hit to left field in the fifth. First two Buckeyes up in the sixth rapped hits, but catcher Randy Brown picked one off first base.
First baseman Arno Chanko, top hitter of Ohio State, had an 0-4 day against Stringfellow, failed to hit with runners on base three times.
Held hitless the first three innings, and hitless in seven innings all toll, the Seminoles threatened in the fourth.
Sarron got the game's first off Arlin, a leadoff shot over the shortstop's head in that inning. After Brown - particularly baffled by Arlin's tight pitching - flied out, Thomas bounced out an infield hit.
But Denny Jacobs, a slick-fielding second baseman, gobbled up Gary Nichol's grounder and turned it into a double play.
Thomas led off the seventh with a triple to deep center, and Nichols immediately brought him home with a single.
Coach Fred Hatfield sent out two left pinch hitters against the right handed Arlin at this point. Rick Hutchinson flied out to deep center. McBryde walked.
But Arlin got Stringfellow and Dick Fernandez on a pair of grounders.
The Seminoles had no more chances. Arlin set them down in one-two-three fashion in both the 8th and 9th.
Hatfield will pitch his 6-5 right hander Cliff Ranew (9-3) against Texas today.

OMAHA, NE - Ever since they pulled out the trip to Gastonia, N.C. and the district playoffs, nothing has come easy for Florida State's baseball team.
The Seminoles won at Gastonia the hard way, rebounding with four straight victories after losing their first.
Then they went against Florida in a pair of games, squeezing out a 5-4 victory, losing 11-10.
On Monday in the opening game of the College World Series they drew perhaps the tournament's toughest pitcher, Ohio State's Steve Arlin, who set them down on four hits, 2-1.
Yesterday they played Texas, a team that, really, they figured to handle rather easy. Though Texas had won the Southwestern Conference title 40 times in 50 years, this year's Longhorns were not particularly impressive.
But it took Florida State 12 innings to get by Texas 3-2. Gary Moore, a sophomore lefthander, permitted the Seminoles just four base hits.
Anyhow, Texas became the first team to bow out of the double-elimination action, carrying home a final 18-7 record.
A fielding beaut saved the game for Florida State. In the 10th inning with Texas runners on third and first, Butch Thompson hit a ball to short right that was labeled "single" all the way.
Rightfielder Tom Thomas made a somersaulting catch of a ball that no-one thought he could reach.
Florida State won it after Gary Lawrence led off the 12th with a single. With one out, Dick Fernandez singled him to third then took some of the pressure off batter Moose Hopkins by stealing second, dimming the possibility of a double play.
Hopkins pounded a fly ball to deep left and Lawrence raced home after the catch.
Tall righthander Cliff Ranew pitched neatly all the way for the Tribe, rationing 10 hits and five walks over 12 innings, picking up his 10th victory against three losses. He had errorless support.
But Moore, the Texas lefthander, wasn't giving much either. He walked seven, struck out 12.
FSU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after catcher Randy Brown got the first of three walks he was to draw in the game. He moved to second on an error, stole third, and scored as Gary Nichols grounded into a double play.
Texas tied it in the fifth on Minton White's double and Thompson's single.
Brown's leadoff homer on the first pitch of the seventh inning gave FSU a 2-1 advantage. It was a 343-foot thriller over the right field wall.
Texas again tied it, scoring on White's single and Thompson's double in the bottom of that inning.
FSU got leadoff runners on base in the 9th, 10th and 11th inning, but couldn't collect. Texas had one or more men on base in every late inning save the 11th.

OMAHA, NE - Florida State's baseball Seminoles, their bats suddenly quiet and their mood the same, flew home last night from the College World Series.
They may be back next year.
St. Louis U. got seven of its nine hits when they counted yesterday and pushed the Seminoles out of the double elimination action with a 5-3 conquest.
Florida State finished its season with a 32-11-1 record. On paper they figure to be better next time around. The squad had just five seniors: pitcher Cliff Ranew (10-3), outfielder Bob Wilcox (.297), outfielder Monte McBryde (.306), first baseman Gary Nichols (.333), third baseman Gary Chmielewski (.233).
Though they won their second game after losing the opener, the Seminoles never got going in Omaha. Over most of the season this team carried an overall batting average in excess of .300.
They got just 13 hits in the three games here, batted a horrendous .135 overall.
St. Louis, playing in its first Series, was a solid team. The Billikens finished the regular season with a .299 batting figure. Their pitching was solid.
The victory brought the Bills to 25-8-1. They meet unbeaten Arizona State at 7 tonight with John Marcum, cool St. Louis ace, getting the unenviable mound chore.
Three pitchers held FSU to five hits yesterday. St. Louis snapped a 3-3 tie with two runs in the seventh.
Florida State had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second.
Tom Thomas beat out an infield hit. Pete Sarron walked. A wild pitch moved both runners up. Pitcher Chuck Hawkins drilled a single to right, scoring Thomas, but Sarron was cut down by a good throw to the plate.
St. Louis scored three times after two were out in the third.
Al York started it with a walk. Then the Bills rattled out four successive singles and went ahead 3-1.
Back came FSU in the 5th, loading the bases with none out. Gary Nichols lived on an error. Hawkins and Gary Lawrence walked.
But Gary Fritzinger, the Bills' starting left hander, got Dick Fernandez on a pop and struck out Moose Hopkins.
Then Randy Brown smashed a first pitch single to right, scoring two. Fritzinger struck out Bob Wilcox to end the inning.
Singles by the Bills' first two batters in the seventh, coupled with Wilcox's error, put runners on second and third with none away. Hawkins struck out Bill Gegg, but Thomas Daly followed with a two-run triple to right.
That was it.
Nichols' triple and Hawkins' second walk had posed an FSU threat after two were out in the sixth. But Fritzinger was lifted in favor of Wally Lembeck, a right hander who got Lawrence on a grounder.
FSU had leadoff batters on base in the last two innings. A double play checked the first bid. And the second was rubbed out by St. Louis pitching sensation Marcum (10-2), who quickly set down the Tribe.
