Also selected on the team announced yesterday by the American Association of Baseball Coaches was outfielder Mike Augustine of Florida State University.
Augustine, a 5-9, 150-pound senior from Philadelphia, is the dream team's No. 2 hitter as far as averages are concerned. The little southpaw senior batted .430.
Augustine, the sixth All-American at FSU in the past nine seasons, led the team in hitting with a final .399 average. His total of 65 hits easily bettered the old mark, set by Bob Clem's 44 in
1959.
Augustine also led this year's team in runs (41), total bases (81), and tied with shortstop Woody Woodward in doubles (eight).
Woodward, a third team All-American this season, whacked six home runs to tie the old record, held jointly by Fred Twomey, 1955, and Jack Dull, 1959. He also led in triples (three), runs batted in
(35) and walks (27).
Rated by Coach Danny Litwhiler as one of the nation's 10 best shortstops - including the pros - Woodward also sparkled in the field. He registered a total of 126 assists, to break the old school
record set by himself last year at 110.
Somewhat ironically, his 22 errors broke the school record of 19, set by Dale Koch in 1959. Litwhiler explains, however, that Woodward's speed afield allows him to reach and knock down many balls that
most shortstops would never touch.
Woodward, who signed Saturday with the Milwaukee Braves on a bonus in the $60,000 category, is one of two Seminoles picked up by the majors so far this year. Pitcher Allen Thomas, who signed with
Boston's Red Sox, is the other.
Al Beccaccio - who started his Seminole career as a second baseman - set a new record for victories with his 12-1 mound mark, while giving up only 58 walks for another record.
Thomas, who had a 9-3 record, also surpassed the old marks of eight victories, set by Frank Slusser in 1958 and Frank Davis in 1959-60.
Second baseman Jimmy Reed led the Seminoles in stolen bases this season, with 12. First baseman-outfielder, Gary Nichols was tops in fielding, with a .986 percentage.
As a team, the 1963 Tribe's record of 26 wins sets a new standard. The old mark of 24 was held by the 1956 team. But this year's team lost 13, while the '56 squad fell only five times.
The team also totaled 200 runs-batted-in for a new record, and missed the record of most hits in a season by one, the 387 total this year falling one shy of last year's total.

OMAHA, NE - Two errors by third baseman Dan Predovic kept a Florida State rally alive in the ninth inning here yesterday as the Seminoles whipped touted Western Michigan 5-2 in the first round of the College World Series.
The victory over the nation's second-ranked put Coach Danny Litwhiler's sluggers in the winner's bracket of the double elimination tournament where they face Arizona tonight at 6 p.m. CST.
Arizona defeated Penn State 8-1, Texas beat Southern California, 8-3, and Missouri downed Holy Cross, 3-0 in other first round action.
Starter Al Beccaccio shut out the once-beaten Broncos for six innings yesterday, giving up only five hits, but left hander Marty Howell had to come on in the seventh and gets credit for the Seminole win.
As in the District 3 playoffs, a decisive factor in the FSU victory was the clutch hitting of shortstop Woody Woodward. Woodward hit two singles - one in the first and one in the ninth - driving in a run with each.
Billy Williamson continued his phenomenal hitting streak gathering three for four and came up with a fielding gem in the second when he grabbed a sure base hit off his shoetops in left field.
The Seminoles grabbed two quick ones in the first inning when Jimmy Reed and Mike Augustine walked. Reed tagged up on George Rountree's pop foul to first baseman Dave Reeves and dashed to third where he was singled home by Woodward.
Augustine scored a moment later when Buddy Teagle's grounder was bobbled at shortstop.
After the first, the game settled into a pitcher's duel between Beccaccio and southpaw Gary Wallman who came into the contest with a 7-1 record.
Things got popping in the seventh as the Broncos scored twice in an inning which saw a disputed play at the plate and the retirement of Beccaccio.
The FSU fastballer gave up his only walk of the afternoon to Fred Decker, then Dick Michalski lined a stinger which hit Beccaccio on the left forearm, but the Seminole hurler made the play to first for the out.
Dave Kwiatowski lined a triple to center scoring Decker who had moved to second on Michalski's liner.
The dispute came when Dan Predovic missed an attempted squeeze bunt in an effort to score Kwiatowski. The ball bounded away from Teagle who could not recover it because Predovic, a left-handed swinger, refused to move from the batter's box.
Kwiatowski had crossed the plate before interference was ruled. Predovic was out and the runner returned to third only to score moments later when FSU right fielder Dave Dahlen erred a hard chance off the bat of Dave Reeves. Howell then relieved Beccaccio and retired the side.
The game seemed earmarked for extra innings until the Tribe half of the ninth when Williamson cracked a leadoff single. Larry Johnson went down on strikes and Howell sacrificed Williamson to second.
Predovic made his first error of the inning on Reed's grounder which advanced Williamson to third from whence he was singled home by Augustine, Reed moving to third on the play.
Predovic's second miscue occurred on Dahlen's shot down the line, scoring Reed. Woodward then singled in Augustine from second with the game's final run.
Moments later Woodward started a game-ending double play off the bat of pinch hitter Jerry Harkenrider.
Litwhiler will start righthander Allen Thomas (9-2) against Arizona tonight.

OMAHA, NE - Arizona pitcher Jim Nichols' sparkling performance proved decisive as the Wildcats edged striving Florida State 4-3 in an 11-inning thriller that highlighted the College World Series' second round of play Tuesday night.
Nichols, a righthander, struck out 12 Seminoles in going the route for the winning Wildcats. From the third inning to the eighth - with the exception of the sixth, when Mike Augustine reached first on balls - Nichols retired the Seminoles in order.
He kept the Wildcats in contention in the crucial extra innings with a fine exhibition of control, then won his own game in the eleventh by whacking a single to drive home the deciding run.
FSU, now 1-1 in series play, meets UCLA tonight at 6:55 EST.(Editors note: we played USC, not UCLA) The Californians eliminated Holy Cross 6-5 Tuesday with a six-run inning in losers' bracket action. Loser of the UCLA-FSU game will be out of the double elimination series.
In other Tuesday action, Penn State ousted Western Michigan from the series in a 3-0 game. The Michigan team's previous loss had some at FSU hands Monday. Missouri, pegged No. 1 in the nation, whipped Texas 3-2 in Tuesday's nightcap.
Missouri and Arizona, the only undefeated teams left in the series, meet today.
Arizona opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Bob Maxwell was walked by Al Thomas. He went to second on a throwing error on an attempted put out by All-America catcher Buddy Teagle. Ron Thebold cracked a single to center, sending Maxwell home.
The Tribe came back in the second to knot things, when George Rountree singled, the stretched it to second base on a throwing error by Wildcat shortstop on the pickup. Billy Williamson's single scored Rountree.
The next six innings featured a pitching duel between Nichols and Thomas, with both keeping the game in strict control. In only one inning did Nichols face more than three batters, and Thomas allowed no more than four Arizona batters to reach the plate.
The Wildcats came back big in the eighth. Mort Saull started a rally with a single. Ron Theobold grounded one to third baseman Larry Johnson, who overthrew Rountree at first base, allowing Saull to take third and Theobold second. A two-out single by cleanup hitter Bill Brown scored the two, sending Arizona into a 3-1 lead.
The top of the ninth was the Seminoles' last chance for a comeback, and Augustine's leadoff single started the Tribe in that direction. Woody Woodward whacked a touring double into right center, to give the Seminoles runners on second and third. Rountree struck out, and the two-out count left things to Teagle. He came through with a clutch single, scoring Augustine and Woodward to tie the game.
Thomas found himself in deep trouble when the first Wildcat batter, Hector Bernetche, cracked a triple, setting up the potential winning run. Coach Danny Litwhiler had Thomas walk the next two men intentionally, giving the Seminoles a potential force play at any base.
Litwhiler then brought the Seminole infield and outfield in close, laying all hopes on a force play. A long fly at that time would have cinched the game for Arizona.
Nichols came to bat and swiftly bunted the ball toward the mound in a suicide squeeze play. Thomas made a desperate lunge, flipped the ball underhanded to Teagle for the force play at the plate.
Thomas struck out pinch hitter Saull for the second out. Maxwell came to bat, belted a sharp one-hopper to Johnson at third. Johnson snared it, lunged to touch third for the force out, ending the Arizona threat and sending the game into extra innings.
The Seminoles put runners on second and third in their part of the tenth, but were unable to score. Thomas sent the Wildcats down in order in the bottom of the tenth. Nichols followed suit to keep the Tribe scoreless in the top of the eleventh.
In the bottom of the eleventh, Bernetche - whose triple had started the threat in the ninth - initiated another Arizona rally with his single to right. Aggie Acuna hit a single that went out of Rountree's reach. Thomas threw wild in a desperate attempt after fielding the ball. The runners made it to third and second before Reed recovered the ball.
Using the same strategy as in the ninth, the Seminoles drew in, Thomas walked another to load the bases and all FSU hopes rode on the force play.
It was then that Nichols ended the game in a dramatic manner, driving one between third and shortstop. Woodward dove for it, but it was too late to keep Bernetche from scoring.
The victory set Nichols' record at 10-3. Thomas, who went 10 1-3 innings on the mound, struck out seven Wildcats, walked eight. He has a 9-3 record now.
Probable starting pitcher for the Seminoles tonight will be sophomore Marty Howell, who was credited with the opening series win over W. Michigan after relieving starter Al Beccaccio in the seventh. Howell has a 2-3 record.

OMAHA, NE - Florida State hopes for a national baseball title were dashed by a California team for the second straight year Wednesday night as the Seminoles were eliminated by Southern California from the College World Series in a 4-3 game.
In the 1962 Series here, Coach Danny Litwhiler's Tribe was ousted in the semifinals by Santa Clara, whose district berth was filled by the Trojans this year.
FSU became the fourth of the eight-team field to be ousted from the series. Western Michigan and Holy Cross were eliminated Tuesday, while Penn State was booted out yesterday by Texas in a 6-4 game that went 10 innings.
In Wednesday's nightcap, Arizona rapped first-pegged Missouri 6-4 to remain the series' only undefeated team. in today's fourth round action, Arizona tangles with Texas after Missouri meets USC.
Errors and bases on balls severely crippled the Seminoles. Tribe pitchers did not walk many Trojans - but those that were given up proved costly. Three of USC's runs were scored by Trojans who had reached base on free passes.
FSU had a 9-5 margin in hits. The Seminoles hit in every inning but the sixth. Top Tribe batters were Larry Johnson, who went two for two, and Woody Woodward, two for four, with one double.
Bob Hollowell was the Trojans' big man at the plate, going two for four, and driving in two runs. One of his hits was a 400-foot home run.
Winning pitcher was Jim Lasas, who held down mound duties for 6 1-3 innings. Loser was sophomore Marty Howell, who limited USC to four scattered hits in six innings of play. But the last two hits were a homer and triple, and Howell was relieved by Gary Williamson.
The Trojans started moving in the bottom of the second. Gary Holman walked, advanced to second on a slow bouncer to third baseman Johnson, who elected to make the easy throw to first.
Holman took third when right fielder Dave Dahlen and second baseman Jim Reed collided in going after a pop fly off the bat of Darrell Wilkins. Holman scored on Larry Sandel's bunt, which went down the first base line.
Neither team scored in for the next three and one-half innings, but Hollowell led off with a mighty crack out of Omaha Municipal Stadium to fire the Trojans up in the sixth.
Holman walked again. After the next batter flied out, Darrell Wilkins whacked a triple into deep right field, sending Holman home. The Trojans led 3-0.
FSU bounced back in the top of the seventh to score two runs. Johnson singled, went to second on a wild pitch. Ken Suarez - pinch hitting for Howell - socked a single between first and second to score Johnson.
Woody Litwhiler ran for Suarez. Mike Augustine walked, after Reed flied out deep to center, Al Beccaccio came to the plate. Litwhiler took third on another wild pitch, scored on Beccaccio's fielder's choice. Augustine was thrown out at second.
Woodward walked, putting men on first and third. Then - in a moment of seeming confusion at the mound - Beccaccio gambled on a steal for home. He was cut down 10 feet from his goal.
Will Brown started things for the Californians in the bottom of the seventh by taking first on balls. He stole second. On the same play, a throwing error by All-America catcher Buddy Teagle let Brown move to third.
Reliever Williamson struck out the next two batters, then gave up a base hit to Hollowell, allowing Brown to score what proved to be the winning run.
In the top of the ninth the Seminoles gave another fantastic effort - as they had the night before in losing to Arizona 4-3 in an 11-inning thriller - to pull themselves out.
Augustine was walked. Pinch hitter Paul Dirks flied to right for the first out. Woodward - always strong in the clutch - banged a double down the third base line, scoring Augustine from first.
George Rountree came to the plate. Woodward raced to third on a wild pitch by reliever Pete Hillman.
Rountree blasted a hard line shot into right field. Ken Washington caught it for out No. 2.
Tribe hopes rode heavily on the next batter - Teagle. With a count of 3-2, he managed to draw his fourth walk of the evening.
So Billy Williamson became the last hope man. On a 1-2 count, he lined a fast ball sharply into center field. Brown backed up five steps for the catch to end the game.
FSU finished with a 26-13 overall season record.
