Fourteen members of Florida State's baseball team that won 21 of 28 games earned letters during the 1958 campaign, Athletic Director Tom
Nugent announced today. The Seminoles set a school record by winning 13 games in a row from April 25 through June 5. The Lettermen include four pitchers, four infielders, four outfielders and
two catchers. Seven are seniors, four juniors and three sophomores. Pitchers Frank Slusser, Jack Bristol, Fred Kenney and Tom Garcia; All-America shortstop Dick Howser, and outfielders Mike Copps,
Owen McCarron and Jerry Philp won't be around next season. Howser, Copps and McCarron recently signed bonus contracts with the Kansas City Athletics, Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers,
respectively. Philp, a sure-fingered halfback, has signed a professional football contract with Toronto. Returning next season are third baseman Dale Koch, second baseman Ray Bazzell, first baseman
Charlie Rodgers, outfielder Jerry Couch and catchers Bill Westendick and Johnny Sheppard. Howser and Copps were named last week to the NCAA All-District first team. Koch and Slusser earned
second-team berths. The lettermen, with final 1958 pitching and batting records: Mike Copps, Cincinatti Reds Signed before the season started: Pfil Hunt, Los Angeles Dodgers A senior from West
Palm Beach, Howser was named today to college baseball's All-America first team for the second year in a row. The 10-man first team, which includes second baseman Bernie Parrish of Florida, was
announced by the American Association of College Baseball Coaches. A diminutive whiz who stands 5-8 and weighs but 147 pounds, Howser only last week signed a bonus contract with the Kansas City
Athletics for a reported $22,000. He currently is playing shortstop for Rochester, Minn., in the Class B Three-I League. Howser was named to the first-team All-America squad as a junior in 1957.
The Florida Sportswriters Association last March voted Howser the state's "Amateur Athlete of the Year" for 1957. .375 Career Mark Howser's .422 batting average and 38 hits in 1956 and 29
RBI in 1957 still stand as Florida State school records. He compiled a sizzling .375 three-year batting average for 77 games as a Seminole. This year, Howser sparked the Seminoles to a 21-7 record
with a .337 batting mark. He led the club in runs (32), doubles (7), triples (4) and walks (23). He bagged the 100th hit of his college career in his last appearance at the plate, a ninth-inning
triple high off the right-center wall against Clemson in the NCAA District 3 playoffs earlier in the month. With Howser making brilliant plays afield and leading the batting parade, the Seminoles
won 67 games while losing only 21 over the past three years. Parrish topped the 10-man team in hitting with a .433 batting average during the 1958 campaign. Jerry Siegert of Southern California,
right fielder, was next with a .404 batting mark and 29 runs batted in. Other All-Americans Two senior right handers won the first team pitching spots. Robert Wedin of Connecticut had a
season record of eight victories and one defeat while fanning 75 hitters. John Rumohr of Western Michigan was the other mound selection. He won nine games against one defeat. Joining Howser and
Parrish in the infield are Frank Sala of Harvard, first base and Ray Uriarte of Missouri, third base. Outfielders, in addition to Siegart, are Dick Grieser of Arizona and Ron Nieman of Wisconsin.
Ralph Holding of Stanford was named the first team catcher. Auburn catcher Pat Duke was named to the second team.
