Daniel Webster Litwhiler, 33-year-old former major league star, is Florida State's new baseball coach.
Litwhiler's appointment to succeed Ralph Matherly, who resigned after last season to accept a position with a Sarasota museum, was announced today. He has already assumed his duties on the FSU campus.
FSU's promising nine, winner of 14 games in 23 starts a year ago, opens spring drills on Feb. 3

"We are very pleased to acquire the services of Litwhiler," said FSU Athletic Director Howard Danford shortly before departing for Europe and a U.S. Army assignment as a special instructor at volleyball clinics, "Litwhiler not only has an outstanding baseball background but he also has considerable educational experience."
For many years Litwhiler has taught social science in high schools during the off-season. Born in Ringtown, Pa., he is a graduate of Bloomsburg (Pa.) State Teachers College. Litwhiler was recommended to FSU by Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick.
Litwhiler was in the majors, with the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Braves and Cincinnati Reds over a span of 11 seasons. He emerged with a lifetime batting average of .280 and a record of 187 consecutive games in the outfield without an error. He is the only player ever to play the full schedule of 154 games in the outfield errorlessly, a feat he turned with the Phillies in '42. The glove he used in that flawless skein was recently entered in baseball's "Hall of Fame" museum.
Retiring as an active player in '50, Litwhiler coached for Cincinnati in '51. Since then, he has managed minor league teams at Fargo, N.D., Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Jamestown, N.Y., and Duluth, Minn. Litwhiler played in the major league all-star game in '42 and in the World Series with the Cardinals in '43 and '44.
Familiarly known as Danny, he has a family string of capital "D's." The list: wife Dorothy, sons Danny (13) and Dickie (9), daughters Deanna (7) and Dottie (3).
Currently seeking a home in Tallahassee for his family of six, Litwhiler requests that anyone with suggestions call the FSU athletic department.
"I am happy to be in Tallahassee," says Litwhiler. "Coaching in college is something I have really always wanted to do. I like teaching and I hope to do some graduate work here."
