Hamilton Submits Resignation Effective At End Of Season.
February 3, 2025
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State University men's basketball head coach Leonard Hamilton announced Monday that he is resigning as head coach effective at the end of the current season. FSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford announced that the University will immediately begin a national search for Hamilton's successor.
Hamilton is the winningest head coach in FSU history and the fifth-winningest head coach in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Seminoles are 13-9 overall this season, including a 4-7 record in ACC play. As head coach at FSU, Hamilton has compiled an overall record of 434-290 including a mark of 196-186 in ACC regular season games. He currently ranks 10th on the NCAA's list of winningest active Division I coaches. Hamilton has led Florida State to 16 postseason appearances and 12 20-win seasons.
"I am deeply thankful for the tremendous support of our fans, alumni, and everyone associated with Florida State throughout my time here," Hamilton said. "I am proud of the quality of the young men that it was my privilege to lead, for their faith in this program and in their belief in the philosophy that we tried to instill in them over the years. I have been blessed beyond words for the opportunity and the experience we've had here.
"My family and I truly love this place, this institution, and its people. I'm very fortunate to be able to have given this job my all with no regrets. Every head coach inherits a legacy and is obligated to leave the job better than they inherited it. I'm very proud of what we have been able to accomplish here over the last 23 seasons. We were a consistent contender, and we created success for our players during their time here. So many of them have gone on to be successful in life. I hope that it will be remembered as my legacy. I look forward to working with our administration during this transition and being as helpful as possible through this process."
"Coach Hamilton's personal character and integrity, and his leadership, set a tremendous standard for all of FSU Athletics," Alford said. "Few people have been as important in building the positive reputation of Seminole Athletics. FSU's stature as one of the leading brands in college sports has been possible, in part, to his leadership of our men's basketball program. He steadily developed a culture of excellence that reflects his personal values: commitment to academic success, competitive success, community service, leadership, and ongoing personal excellence. The success of the men who have been part of our basketball program is proof of that legacy."
"Leonard Hamilton is a beacon of class and integrity whose leadership serves as an indelible example that competitive excellence, academic achievement and community service are attainable at a leading public institution," said FSU President Dr. Richard McCullough. "Coach Hamilton's legacy extends far beyond Tallahassee and college basketball. He is one of the most respected and beloved ambassadors of FSU across the nation and in his profession."
Hamilton has earned three national Coach of the Year honors and was named the conference Coach of the Year five times. He is the only person to earn multiple Coach of the Year honors in both the ACC and the Big East. In 37 seasons as a head coach at Oklahoma State, Miami (Fla.) and FSU, he earned 22 postseason bids, leading his teams to five Sweet 16 appearances, and three conference championships, including FSU's first ACC Tournament title in 2012 and FSU's first regular season ACC title in the 2019-20 season, and has an overall record of 634-500 (.559 winning percentage).
At FSU, Hamilton has developed 19 NBA Draft selections, including nine first-round picks led by No. 4 overall selections Patrick Williams in 2020 and Scottie Barnes in 2021. He has coached 24 All-ACC selections, 13 ACC All-Defensive Team selections, four ACC Sixth Man of the Year recipients and two ACC Defensive Players of the Year.
With an equal focus on academic and athletic achievement, nearly 97 percent of Hamilton's players who completed their eligibility earned their degrees and 20 student-athletes were named to the All-ACC Academic Team. His team produced a program-record 3.16 grade-point average in the spring of 2023 highlighted by 10 individual GPAs of at least 3.0.
"I'm excited for the future of men's basketball at Florida State,"
Alford said. "Thanks to Coach Hamilton's excellent stewardship and leadership, it has been proven that Florida State can be a contender in the ACC and nationally. I'm looking forward to continuing to
build on what he has accomplished here as we identify the next leader of our program."
March 9, 2025
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State has hired former player and two-time NBA champion Luke Loucks as its men's basketball head coach, FSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford announced Sunday.
"I'm excited to announce that Luke Loucks has accepted our offer to become the next head men's basketball coach at Florida State," Alford said. "Luke will bring a unique combination of qualities to our program, and I'm excited to begin the next chapter of our basketball history under his leadership. Throughout basketball at both the professional and collegiate levels, Luke has earned a reputation as one of the rising stars in coaching. Having been a key part of some of the best of what FSU basketball has been as a player, he also brings proven ability to develop players at the highest level of the sport."
"I am thrilled to welcome Luke Loucks back to Florida State University as our next head men's basketball coach," Florida State President Richard McCullough said. "Luke's exceptional coaching ability, profound leadership skills, and extensive basketball knowledge make him the perfect fit to lead our program. As a former Seminole, he understands the values and traditions that define FSU basketball. I am confident that under his guidance, Florida State will continue to achieve great success and uphold the proud legacy of Seminole basketball. Welcome home, Coach Loucks!"
Loucks brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in professional, collegiate and international basketball. He specializes in on-court instruction and player development and most recently served as an assistant coach with the Sacramento Kings after spending time on staff with the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns.
"I am incredibly honored and excited for the opportunity to become the head coach for the Florida State men's basketball team," Loucks said. "FSU has a rich basketball tradition, and I look forward to building on the legacy of our previous coaches, especially Coach Hamilton. I'd like to thank the Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors for providing me with a strong coaching foundation. I'm eager to build our coaching staff with the best and brightest basketball coaches in America. They will have characteristics that support and push me while helping me build and develop a competitive team year after year. We will have a standard that we stick to on and off the court that will help build a championship-level culture. I am privileged to have seen firsthand what winning feels like at Florida State, and I am hungry for more."
His time in the NBA included working with perennial All-Stars Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, DeMar DeRozan, De'Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis and Zach Lavine. During Loucks' time in Golden State, Durant was twice named NBA Finals MVP and was also a first-team All-NBA selection. Curry earned first-team All-NBA honors three times with Loucks on staff, and Green was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2017.
"Our staff will recruit and fill our roster with competitive, high-IQ and highly skilled players with professional basketball aspirations," Loucks said. "Our job is to mold those individuals into a cohesive unit that understands our vision and the way we want to play. My wife and three children are thrilled to move back home to Florida, where our families live and community ties are strong. We can't wait to build something special in Tallahassee."
Loucks was part of a staff that led the Warriors to back-to-back NBA championships, winning the 2017 title in five games over the Cleveland Cavaliers and repeating in 2018 with a sweep of the Cavaliers. The Warriors posted a postseason record of 46-14 in his four seasons with the franchise, including a 16-1 mark in the 2017 Playoffs that set the NBA record for the best winning percentage in a single Playoffs.
"I'm very excited about the future of our men's basketball program, and also very pleased that this new era will represent a bridge to a successful past with a path to an even brighter future," Alford said. "I'm also excited that Luke and his wife, Stevi, both intimately understand the experience of being an FSU student-athlete. They understand what a special place this is, and I'm extremely grateful for their desire to want to be part of it again."
Before returning to Tallahassee to lead Florida State, Loucks spent the three previous seasons as an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings. He was Sacramento's defensive coordinator in 2024-25, helping the Kings to their best defensive showing in 20 seasons. In his first two seasons, he worked with the Kings' offense. The 2022-23 team broke the NBA's single-season offensive efficiency rating with a mark of 119.4 that was a full point better than the previous record.
In 2022-23, his first season with the Kings, the team posted a 48-34 record, the franchise's most wins since 2004-05, and made the Playoffs for the first time since 2005-06. The next year, he helped the Kings produce 46 wins for the franchise's best two-year stretch since the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. He also coached the Nigerian National Team, helping Nigeria defeat Team USA in a pre-Olympics exhibition game and then rank first among all countries with an average of 11.0 steals per game at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Loucks helped lead FSU to the NCAA Tournament in all four of his seasons as a player, the first time in program history the Seminoles advanced to the NCAA Tournament in four consecutive years. He was named to the All-ACC Tournament Team in 2012 after leading Florida State to the program's first ACC Tournament title.
In the ACC Championship Game victory over top-seed and No. 4-ranked North Carolina, Loucks tied the program record for most assists in a game against an ACC opponent with 13. His 136 career games played are No. 4 on FSU's all-time list, and he still ranks 10th in program history with 391 career assists. After his FSU playing career, Loucks played three seasons in Europe and one year in the NBA Development League.
Loucks earned his bachelor's degree in business management from Florida State in 2011 and completed his master's degree in sport management from FSU in 2012. He and his wife, Stevi, have three children. He is married to the former Stevi Steinhauer, who competed in freestyle, butterfly and relay events for FSU from 2006-10. Loucks' sister, Emma, played on the Florida State women's basketball team her freshman year and their father, Lincoln, also attended Florida State.
Luke Loucks Coaching History
"Luke was an exceptional Seminole player who played a key role in leading Florida State to its first ACC Championship. I'm very proud to see him return as head coach of a program he helped elevate to such great heights. Luke and Stevi embody what it means to be a Seminole -- wearing the Garnet and Gold isn't just part of their past; it's part of who they are. They are family, and it's special to have a Florida State basketball coach who truly understands that. I also want to commend Director of Athletics Michael Alford and Deputy Director of Athletics Doug Walker for conducting a thoughtful and thorough search process, resulting in an excellent choice to lead the Florida State program into its next chapter." Leonard Hamilton, Florida State Head Coach 2002-2025
"Luke Loucks is a skilled coach and especially gifted at player development. He helped Kings players reach All-Star and All-NBA honors. He is passionate about FSU, and I know he is prepared for this special opportunity." Monte McNair, Sacramento Kings General Manager
"I am incredibly
thrilled for Luke, as he is incredibly deserving of this opportunity. Florida State is getting an absolute winner as a head coach and a gem of a person. Luke has experience in every facet of the game.
He's fantastic with player development, was part of a championship program in Golden State and was a huge asset to my coaching staff in Sacramento. He is a terrific connector with players and people
and will be a tremendous leader on and off the floor for the Seminoles. I know Luke, his wife Stevi and three beautiful children are excited to return to Tallahassee and will be a wonderful addition
to the Florida State family." Mike Brown, Sacramento Kings Head Coach 2022-2024

McCray V Totals School Record 17 Assists; Loucks Wins Debut as Florida State Defeats Alcorn State 108-76.
By Sam Stevens
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State senior Robert McCray V was credited with a school-record 17 assists, and Luke Loucks won his first game as the Seminoles' head coach in a 108-76 season-opening win for the Seminoles over Alcorn State at the Donal L. Tucker Center. McCray broke the school record for assists in a single game, formerly held by Otto Petty in 1972 and matched by Tony William in 1983. With 12 points to go along with his 17 assists, McCray became the first player to record a double-double in a season-opener since Malik Osborn totaled a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds against Penn on Nov. 10, 2021.
Luke Loucks earned his first victory as Florida State's head coach as he became the eighth Seminole coach to win his first game. Every coach in school history has now won his first game as Florida State's head coach.
McCray also was the first player to record at least 13 assists since Loucks recorded 13 against North Carolina in leading the Seminoles to the first ACC Championship in school history on March 11, 2012.
The Seminoles' 2025 season opened with an alley-oop slam from McCray to Alex Steen. Steen finished the game with 12 points, six rebounds, and tied a game-high with two blocks.
Alcorn State led 15-14 at the 14:22 mark of the first half but a 16-0 Seminole run over the next four minutes gave Florida State a 30-15 with 10:43 remaining. The Seminoles led by at least 13 points, and by 34 with 20 seconds remaining in the second.
The Seminoles went into halftime with a 58-44 lead, fueled by Chauncey Wiggins' 12 first-half points. Wiggins closed his first Florida State game with a career-high 22 points and five rebounds. Wiggins' 22 points are the most scored by a Florida State player in a season opener since PJ Savoy scored 20 on November 10, 2021, against Florida.
Florida State began the second half on a 10-4 run, and a Lajae Jones' 3-point shots extended the Seminoles lead to 66-46 with 18:38 left to go. Jones scored 18 points and recorded a game-high seven rebounds in his first game as a Seminole.
The Seminoles would outscore the Braves 42-30 throughout the rest of the game, finishing the game with 13 made 3-point shots. Florida State's 13 made 3-point shots were the most made in a game since Florida State finished with 13 against Clemson on January 28, 2023.
In his first collegiate regular-season game, freshman Cam Miles recorded 10 points and totaled two assists in nine minutes.
Guards Kobe MaGee and Martin Somerville each scored nine, both finishing the night with three 3-point field goals made.

Jones Leads Seminoles' 3-Point Barrage In 101-64 Victory Over Alabama State.
By Sam Stevens
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State senior Lajae Jones scored a game-high 20 points, and the Seminoles made a near-school record 18 3-point shots, as they won their second consecutive game to open the season with a 101-64 win over Alabama State at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The Seminoles made 18 3-point shots (two shy of tying the school record for 3-point shots made in a game) while attempting a school and ACC record 3-point 47 3-point field goals.
Florida State improved to 2-0 on the season as it topped the 100-point mark for the second consecutive game. The Seminoles averaged 104.5 points scored per game in their first two games of the season. The Seminoles are 2-0 for the third consecutive season. Alabama State, playing its season-opener, fell to 0-1.
The 18 made 3-point baskets made by the Seminoles rank as the third highest total for made 3-point shots made in a single game at Florida State and the most made since Florida State made 17 against Clemson on Feb. 5, 2017. Florida State outscored the Skyhawks 13-6 to close the game and reach the final score of 87-73. Miles was responsible for seven of the Seminoles' final 13 points, with all seven coming consecutively.
Swinton's three steals are the most he has recorded in a game since he recorded his previous record of two against Syracuse on Jan. 4, 2025.

Wiggins Leads Seminoles Against Wake Forest.
By Maddy Branning
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State men's basketball team fell to conference foe Wake Forest by a final score of 69-68 on Saturday night at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.
The Seminoles (7-11, 0-5 ACC) could not outlast the Demon Deacons (11-7, 2-3 ACC) in a game that saw five ties and 11 lead changes.
Three Seminoles scored in double figures, with senior forward Chauncey Wiggins leading the effort with 15 points. Senior guard Robert McCray V followed with 12 points and led the team with five assists while recording six rebounds, one block and one steal. Wiggins and McCray V each went a perfect 5-of-5 at the free-throw line. Freshman guard Thomas Bassong rounded out the three with 11 points and five boards.
Senior guard Lajae Jones pulled down a season-high and team-leading 10 rebounds in the loss. He would finish the night with seven points and one block.
Florida State shot 37.9 percent from the field (22-of-58) and a strong 89.5 percent from the stripe (17-of-19) while outrebounding Wake Forest 44-28.
Four three-pointers in the first six minutes courtesy of Somerville, McCray V, Bassong and Jones helped Florida State to a hot start while their opponent struggled to break into double digits. Miles and Swinton would also find the hoop from beyond the arc, creating an 8-point lead and forcing Wake Forest into a timeout at 9:41.
The break would prove fruitful for the Demon Deacons, who generated an 8-0 run to tie the contest at 24-24 with 8:36 remaining. A scoring drought saw a stalemate between both sides until a pair of free throws from Somerville broke the ice. Wake Forest would continue to answer and pushed ahead briefly at 3:52, yet a layup and-one by McCray would recapture the lead for the Seminoles, 30-29.
Despite pushback from the Demon Deacons, strong defensive effort from the Seminoles kept their conference foe off the board through the final two minutes of the first half. A go-ahead jumper from Wiggins coupled with two more makes at the free-throw line by Somerville sent the Seminoles into halftime with a 34-31 edge.
Somerville led the scoring effort with seven points, scoring from all areas of the hardwood highlighted by a perfect 4-for-4 mark at the stripe. Jones recorded seven rebounds while McCray V led with three assists as well as the lone block of the first half.
As a team, six different Seminoles recorded a triple and edged Wake Forest in first half rebounds (25-17), assists (8-4) and first half field goal percentage (39.3 percent to WF's 34.2 percent).
A corner three from Bassong and subsequent dunk by Steen saw a strong second half open for FSU, yet Wake Forest was quick to find their footing. Wiggins worked the paint while a mid-range jumper from Somerville saw the Seminoles work right back into the lead at 50-48 with 11:17 to go.
Fighting the lead back once more at 10:13, the Seminoles generated a 7-0 run by dominating the free-throw line alongside intermittent layups from Jones and Swinton.
Wake Forest drew close with their own free-throw shooting prowess as Florida State fought to maintain their lead as what was a nine-point gap at 4:26 quickly became just a one-point game with 24 seconds to go. The Demon Deacons would take advantage and edge ahead 69-68 in the final seconds.

By Sam Stevens
CLEMSON, S.C. - Robert McCray V led all scorers with 29 points in Florida State's 70-65 win over the No. 24 Clemson Tigers at the Littlejohn Coliseum. The win was Florida State's third consecutive win, its seventh win in its last nine games, and its fourth ACC road win of the season. The win was also the first over a ranked teams for Seminole head coach Luke Loucks and his staff. The victory was the first by the Seminoles since an 77-71 overtime win over No. 22/23 Colorado on November 21, 2023 in the championship game of the Sunshine Slam.
Florida State improved to 14-13 and 7-7 in the ACC. Clemson fell to 20-8 and 10-5 in ACC play. The Tigers entered the game ranked No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches poll.
McCray V's 29 points tie his season high, which he set on November 7, 2025, against the Florida Gators. He has finished with double-digit scoring in 14 straight games and has scored 20 or more points in seven games this season. After trailing at halftime, Florida State rode a second-half surge to grab its third consecutive come-from-behind victory. Florida State has shot at least 50% from the field and at least 40% from the 3-point line in the second half of each of the last three games.
The Seminoles' effort was on display on offense and defense. Florida State outscored the Tigers 11-0 in second-chance points. The Seminoles turned 8 Clemson turnovers into 14 points, outscoring the Tigers 14-9 in that category.
Florida State controlled most of the first half and held a six-point, 17-11, lead with 8:36 remaining in the first half. The Tigers would then go on a 10-0 run to take a 21-17 lead.

Jones finished the game with 13 points, two rebounds, and a team-high three blocks. He has recorded three blocked shots in three games this season and twice in ACC play. Jones has scored in double-figures in six straight games.
Florida State trailed 36-33 at halftime.
McCray V scored four of the Seminoles' first six points of the second half. He scored 22 of his 29 points after the intermission.
Florida State trailed by one, 41-42, with 15:57 to play. An AJ Swinton slam in transition sparked a 7-0 run to give the Seminoles a 48-42 lead.
Senior Chauncey Wiggins extended the Seminoles' lead to eight, 52-44, with 11:19 remaining. The eight-point lead was Florida State's largest lead of the game.
In his first game against his former team, Wiggins scored seven points and grabbed two rebounds. Wiggins shot 50% (3-6) from the floor and 50% (1-2) from behind the 3-point line.
A closely contested final 10 minutes saw the Tigers hold a two-point lead, 65-63, with 2:44 to play.
The Seminoles held the Tigers scoreless in those remaining two minutes and closed the game on a 7-0 run. McCray V scored all seven points over that span.
