The Seminole cagers who will be guided this year by J.K. "Bud" Kennedy, face a 21-game schedule this season that will run until the Dixie Conference tourney late in February and early in March.
Kennedy, who is at present better known for his activities as athletic business manager at the local school, succeeds Donald Loucks at the helm of the Indian hoopsters.
The change in coaches was brought about by an FSU ruling which prohibits a coach from handling more than one varsity sport. Loucks elected to guide the Seminole tennis squad.
Kennedy handled the Seminole "B" squad last season. He has a long, successful career in the cage game.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Florida State Seminoles were officially crowned Dixie Conference football champions here yesterday, but the joy of their triumph was somewhat tempered by the loss of Bill
Kratzert, all-around FSU athlete.
Kratzert, first three-sport lettermen in FSU's brief athletic history, was ruled ineligible from further athletic competition because of a professional baseball contract which he signed several years
ago. After signing Kratzert suffered an injury that kept him out of actual play, but the loop members ruled against his eligibility.
Kratzert's loss will be a severe blow to the Seminole basketball squad. Last year he paced the Indian scoring brigade, and his floor work has stood out in the three games played this season.
He was also a mainstay of the Seminole tennis team. His third letter was gained in football in 1947. He did not participate in the grid sport during the Indians' championship season just past.
Art was an Army deep-sea diver/welder during World War II. He was stationed on a ship on France and he would weld sunken ships and other debris together to make bridges for Allied use.
After the war he returned to Brooklyn and was on a YMCA basketball team that won the city championship. A coach who was just hired by Findlay College in Ohio asked Art to join his team. While at
Findlay, a group of football players, led by Joe Marcus, was going to travel to Tallahassee to visit an all-women's college that just turned co-educational and was recruiting athletes to play football
and basketball. Art couldn't make the trip but asked Joe to mention he might be interested. Coach Bud Kennedy soon called and asked Art to come down for a tryout. Art hitch-hiked to Tallahassee and
after playing basketball for a few days was offered a spot on the Seminole roster. Art served as team captain that year.
Although he was only a junior in eligibility, he had enough credits to graduate. Since FSU did not offer scholarships at the time and money was tight, Art decided to forego his senior year.
Two members of the basketball squad will be awarded freshmen numerals and three managers - two from the quintet and one for the high netmen - will also get letters.
Basketball lettermen are: Captain Art Adams, Brooklyn, NY; Lee Benjamin, Miami; Larry "Turtle" Dickson, Tampa; Ronnie Nettles, Tallahassee; Dick Kendall, Shelbyville, Ind; Tom McLaughlin, Madison,
Ind; Jim Pavy, Versailles, Ind; Bob Pence, Shelbyville, Ind; "Wild" Bill Weigel, Batesville, Ind; and Orlando "Whitey" Wyman, Mayfield, Ky.
Managers receiving letters are: Howard "Beans" Stephens, Panama City and Ted Revell, Tallahassee.
Freshmen numerals went to George Folliard and James "Buddy" Kyne, Miami.
Volley ball men receiving varsity letters are: Jack Wilson, Milton; Newton Sayers, Tallahassee; Charles Franklin, Tallahassee; Wallace Cox, Palmetto; Carroll Gleaton, Tampa; Royce Burt, Tallahassee;
Charles Floyd, Pensacola; Johnny Fortune, Laurel Hill; Walter Wells, Stuart and Max Bayard, Tampa. Max Woitcshek, Tallahassee, will be awarded a manager's letter.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Florida State University Seminoles opened their 1948-49 basketball campaign last night with a 53-21 victory over Mississippi College in a dull, listless Dixie Conference tilt witnessed by 700 fans in the West Campus gym.
The Seminole squad, decked out with a "new look" that included five rangy newcomers, a new coach and spanking white and garnet uniforms, controlled the ball, backboards and ball game from the time the opening horn sounded.
They employed a "weaving" offense that failed to run the Mississippians out of their zone defense, bit piled up points steadily throughout as the Indian sharpshooters displayed a knack for hitting the rims the hard way.
Chocs Badly "Off"
The Choctaws continually got the jump on the FSU defenders and ganged the goal in two, three and four man forays that had the Indian defense badly outnumbered, particularly during the first half. But the Mississippians were suffering from a woeful "off" night, and they missed enough short shots to have given them a successful season.
The pattern of the game remained the same throughout the 40-minute session as FSU employing its slow, deliberate attack, worked around the fringe of the Choc zone until they got an opening or took a crack from outside. They were hawking the ball off the boards, and usually tipped in or recovered their misses.
Mississippi would then storm the basket with a volley of short shots that missed with amazing inaccuracy, and the Indians would recover and plod down to a score.
After Jim Pavy dropped in a foul shot to score the initial point for the third straight year, FSU pulled steadily away and built up a 23-10 margin at halftime as the Chocs were limited to four field goals and a pair of foul tosses.
Bouncing out after the halftime the Seminoles rolled up a 44-16 margin before the Chocs took advantage of the usual last minute flurry to stage their biggest scoring spree of the night and amass five fairly closely grouped points.
Cleans Bench
Coach Bud Kennedy, fielding his first varsity squad since taking over the helm, cleaned the bench of subs as he poured 15 performers into the game. And every combination he sent out continued to click.

Seminoles Cop Opener
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Coach Bud Kennedy's Indian quintet copped the opener of the two-game series Friday night with a nine-point drive in the last four minutes that slew the ball game apart and gave them a 46-38 decision over the Mocs.
Until the Seminoles final flurry the intrastate rivals had staged a see-saw battle that kept the two teams within four poins of each other throughout as the lead changed hands several times.
The Seminoles hit the halftime with a slim 19-18 margin, but the Mocs bounced back after the intermission to take the lead away twice before FSU went out in front again to stay.
With time running out the Mocs twice rallied and pulled up to a 37-36 deficit before the Seminoles hit their hot hand.
With four minutes to go Bill Weigle, Bill Kratzert and Lee Benjamin collaberated to keep FSU out in front. Weigle clicked for five points in the closing rally, while Kratzert and Benjamin contributed a pair apiece.
Rough Tilt
The game was rough, with 36 personal fouls being called over the route. But the penalties were well distributed, with the Seminoles fine guard Whitey Wyman, the only man to foul out.
Weigle paced the Seminoles scorers with 10 points, closely followed by Art Adams and Tom McLaughlin with nine apiece.
On the defense Bill Kratzert, last year's scoring leader, turned in an outstanding game to halt the Mocs offense on numerous occasions.
Bill Wittpen, towering center, lead Southern with 10 points, but it was "Chuck" Terry, last year's scoring guru who caught the eyes of the crowd with his floor play.
Gene Robbins, Moc forward who entered the game with a 17-point scoring average was limited to three dueces from the field and a foul shot and took runner-up honors to Wittpen with seven points.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - After a slow, shaky start Florida State University's cagers turned on the steam in the second half last night and rolled to a 63-45 win over Florida Southern college before 650 spectators in the West campus gymnasium. The victory ran the Seminole string to three straight and their second over the Moccasins.
Lanky Tom McLaughlin, Madison, Ind, Bill Kratzert, last year's scoring ace, and Art Adams led the Seminole attack that began in the closing minutes of the first half.
McLaughlin poured 17 points through the hoops and Kratzert and Adams rang up eleven each.
Southern started scoring at the opening whistle and raced to an 11-3 lead while the white-clad Seminoles stumbled and fumbled in an attempmt to get their weaving offense to clicking.
Mocs Hitting Longs
Coach "Bud" Kennedy's charges covered the enemy backboard well in the first few minutes, but the Moccasins hit with long shots to pull away before the baffled Seminoles could throw up an effective defense.
Then midway in the first half, with McLaughlin and Orlando Wyman of Mayfield, Ky, paving the way, the FSU courtmen crept to within two points, 22-20, and stayed on the Moccasins' heels right up to the final seconds before intermission when Adams sank a crip shot to put his team out in front 27-26. Adams played a good game before fouling out in the second charter.
Action Reversed
The second period was just the reverse of the first. The Seminoles harried the Moccasins while letting loose a scoring barrage that saw McLaughlin and Kratzert rip the nets with deadly accuracy. McLaughlin shoved in ten points, and Kratzert bagged nine.
Southern, hard pressed by the FSU men, was able to connect with only one field goal in the first 15 minutes of play as its cagers were continually rushed to get off shots. The Mocs lost almost complete control of their backboard as the Seminoles spun a web-like defense around the Lakeland crew when they were not chaulking up points.
Bill Wittpen, Jersy City, and Norval Brown, Whitewater, Ind, were the mainstays of the Southern team. Whittpen scored eight times and Brown garnered seven while trying to keep his mates together.
Benjamin, Wyman Help
The entire Seminole team played good ball in the aftermath, but the ball-hawking and all-around floor play of Lee Benjamin and Wyman put a shot in the arm of the Indian attack.
Coach Kennedy flooded the floor of the fray as he emptied the bench, but the Moccasins never regained their first half fire and continued to falter.

TROY, AL - The Florida State University Seminoles pulled away from the rallying Troy State quintetin the final 35 seconds last night to hand the Red Wave cagers a 68-64 setback in a rough and tumble tilt.
Troy, trailing 14 points with nine minutes left to play, staged a desperate race against the clock and pulled up to a 65-64 deficit before the Seminoles halted the drive.
With the Seminoles holding a precarious one-point lead in the closing seconds, Whitey Wyman, smooth FSU floorman, dropped in a beautiful two-pointer from the corner and Jim Pavy caged a foul shot to ice the issue.
Wyman's Only Score
Wyman's clutch goal was his only score of the game.
The victory was the Seminoles' fourth in a row, and their first cage victory on the road in two seasons of play.
Last year's quintet won all five of its victories at home, and the current crew grabbed its opening trio of wins on its own floor.
The Seminoles showed steady improvement over Mississippi College and Southern College triumphs in downing the Troy State five.
Little Lee Benjamin and Pavy hawked the ball relentlessly and contributed 16 and 14 points from the field respectively.
Pavy, whose floor game equaled that of Benjamin and Wyman, kept the Indians on the move in the first half with 11 of his 14 points coming in the opening period.
Bill Weigle played his best game of the season and clicked for 16 points. Weigle and Benjamin sparked FSU's second half scoring efforts. Weigle got nine in the final canto and Benjamin 10.
Adams Muffled
Art Adams, towering Seminole center was held to eight points as the Red Wave pressed him hard under the basket and kept him tied up.
Tom McLaughlin, hero of the Indians' second win over Southern, supplied the remaining 12 points with four field goals and an equal number of charity tosses.
Riddle and Wilson sparked Troy's offense with a steady barrage of shots that connected from outside. Garret also stood out for the Wave with five fielders on difficult shots from the corner.
The opening half was a see-saw battle as FSU shot out in front at the outset only to see Troy come back and take a 12-8 lead.
The Seminoles started to move at that point and raced out in front 19-14.
FSU set the pace through to the halftime and led 35-30 at intermission.
They coninued to dominate the play through the first 10 minutes of the second half before the Wave started to roll in its desperate attempt to salvage a victory.

JACKSON, TN - The Florida State University Seminoles, playing their first game since the Christmas holidays, were knocked out of the undefeated ranks last night by Lambuth College of Jackson, Tenn, which mowed them down 57-50 here.
Lambuth jumped ahead at the opening gun and was never headed although FSU moved within two or three points on several occasions.
The Seminoles' Adams tossed in 16 markers to lead the way for both squads with Parker of Lambuth second with 15.
Both teams seemed to show the effects of their long layoff, with the ball-handling and breaking sluggish throughout.
FSU is slated to move into Union at Jackson tonight for the second tilt of the current three-game road tour. They play Southwestern at Memphis Thursday night.

JACKSON, TN - The favored Union University Bulldogs made a driving comeback in the final minutes of the second half to beat the Florida State University Seminoles 56-52 at the Lambuth college gym here last night.
The Seminoles had jumped off to an early lead and held it during the first half behind Lee Benjamin's expert ball handling. They led at intermission 26-17.
Union made its first rally at the start of the second half when they pulled up to knot the score at 30-all the first four minutes. The Bulldogs went ahead briefly but fell behind a minute later when George Folliard, starting his first game, and Dick Kendall, sank a pair of long ones.
The Dogs made their second and successful rally in the final three minutes of the ball game.
Slowly Build Lead
They pulled ahead 51-50 and slowly built that lead up to hold the 56-52 margin at the final whistle.
Murl Willoughby, Union forward, emergered high point man for the night after getting only two points during the entire first half.
George Folliard and Dick Kendall were high for the Seminoles with 13 and 12 points respectively.
FSU moves into Memphis tonight where they will meet the highly touted Southwestern college quintet. Tonight's tilt will be the last for the Indians until Jan. 5 when they meet Stetson in Tallahassee.

MEMPHIS, TN - The FSU Seminoles went down to their third straight defeat of the holiday schedule last night, bowing 54-47 to Southwestern of Memphis in a rough and tumble fray.
Sixty personal fouls marred the game which saw five Indians leave via that route.
Little Lee Benjamin, Seminole floor ace, racked up 16 points to lead FSU before he went the way of the showers late in the hectic third period.
The Lynx jumped away early in the game to take a 23-17 halftime bulge. The tilt got rougher in the second half with a total of 39 foouls called against FSU ans 31 on the Southwestern quintet.
Other Seminoles who fouled out of the battle were Weigle, Dickson, Kendall and Nettles. Pridgeon hit the showers early for Southwestern.
Florida State won their first four ball games but has since tried vainly to get back on the trail of more victories, only to lose three in a row to Tennessee courtmen during their holiday sojourn there.
The Indians are idle until Jan. 5 when they meet Stetson in Tallahassee.
