Waxman is an FSU graduate and the 1972 captain of the FSU Track and Field team. Following graduation, Bernie embarked on a distinguished 45-year career at FSU, the first 17 years directing the Campus
Recreation Intramural Program and the final 28 years as the Associate Athletics Director of Facilities Planning, Operations and Event Management. He was an inspirational and compassionate leader who was intensely loyal to the department leadership and to his staff. He set the highest of standards and motivated his staff to seek excellence in all endeavors. Bernie served brilliantly as the department's facilities planner for eight Athletic Directors. He was universally respected for his vision and his ability to incisively evaluate and make candid recommendations. His focus was always on providing the best possible facilities and experiences for FSU's student athletes and teams. Under his supervision and leadership, FSU went through arguably the most comprehensive modernization of FSU's athletic venues. Every athletic facility was either built or renovated during his tenure including: the expansion and integration of Doak S. Campbell Stadium into the University Center Complex; construction of the new Coyle E. Moore Athletic Center, the Alber J. Dunlap Athletic Training Facility, the Stiles-Smith Seminole Soccer and Softball Complex, the Basketball Training Center, the Dave Middleton Golf Center, the Morcom Aquatics Center, the Indoor Tennis Facility and Multi-Purpose Education Facility, the Beach Volleyball Complex, the Apalachee Regional Park Cross Country Complex, and the MacIntosh Track and Field Building. He also spearheaded the renovation of Dick Howser Stadium, the redesign and renovation of Seminole Legacy Golf Club, and the upgrade of athletic spaces within Tully Gymnasium and at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center. His efforts raised FSU's athletic facilities to the top tier in America and set the standard for other intercollegiate athletic programs to emulate. Bernie also performed magnificently as the department sport oversight for Men's and Women's Track, Cross Country, and Golf. He aggressively and enthusiastically mentored the
student athletes in his charge. In addition to encouraging competitive success, he constantly stressed academics, sportsmanship and character development. |
