Carlos Fraundorfer's athleticism was too much for just one sport at Florida State. He shared his athletic talent with the football, basketball, and track and field teams. It was with track and field,
however, that Fraundorfer ran, threw, and jumped his way into the annals of athletic history at Florida State. As captain of the track team Fraundorfer held school records in four different events. He excelled in the 100 and 440 yard dashes, sprint medley, mile relay and 880 yard relay. When he stepped inside the track, Fraundorfer grabbed yet more records. He set such unprecedented marks as, "most points scored in a season," shot put (48'4") and discus throw (146'4"), as well as, long jump (23'3 1/2"). He received his degree from Florida State University in Education. In 1976, he earned a Masters degree in Education Administration and Supervision. Today, Fraundorfer is still very involved in both education and athletics. A teacher in the Hillsborough County school system, Fraundorfer has filled vacant gaps in his teaching schedule by coaching football, basketball, and his beloved track/cross country. Still competitive, Fraundorfer has gone on to win several Masters
National Championships in the hammer throw. In 1992, he was inducted into the State of Florida Hall of Fame. Obituary for Jose Carlos Fraundorfer From the Tampa Tribune, October 26, 2001, page 39. Track Star, Coach Fraundorfer Dead At 69. By Rozel A. Lee Carlos Fraundorfer, who coached track athletes in Hillsborough County for four decades and was himself a standout at Florida State University, died Sunday during surgery to repair and aneurysm. Fraundorfer, 69, retired from Hillsborough County schools two years ago but continued to coach track at Tampa Catholic. After setting track and field records in the long jump and 440-yard run at FSU, where he also played football and basketball, he returned to Tampa and began coaching at Chamberlain in 1956. He also coached football and track at Plant and Hillsborough. The 1951 Hillsborough High graduate was inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame and the Florida Sports Hall of Fame, both in 1993. Fraundorfer overcame childhood rheumatic fever to compete in athletics. Yvonne Casares is compiling his memoirs in which he wrote: "I feel lucky to be an athlete, period. Even if I would have never set junior high, high school, college and master's records. I've been surrounded by great coaches, outstanding athletes and above all caring parents and a Christian outlook," He remained dedicated to FSU; that's why the family has established a track scholarship in his name at the university. Contributions may be made to the Jose Carlos Fraundorfer Athletic Scholarship. "He was such a gentleman, always such a pleasure to talk to," said Casares, whose husband Ernie was coached by Fraundorfer at Plant High. Fraundorfer is survived by his wife, Teresa
Register, a son, Derrick, daughters Carrie and Carla, and step children Andrew and Melissa Register. |
