SOUTH
BEND - Larry E. Moore, 73, died peacefully at his home in Mountain Iron,
MN, on March 12, 2016. He went home to be with hid Lord and Savior. Larry
was born in South Bend, IN, on July 10, 1942, to Jane and Ernest Moore. He
was the only son in the family of five sisters. Growing up he loved the
game of basketball, playing every chance he could to perfect his game. In
his senior year he averaged 10 points per game for the John Adams Eagles.
He graduated from Adams High School in 1960, and joined the Navy in 1961.
After basic training in San Diego, he was assigned to the USS Liddle, as an
engine man during the Cuban missile crisis, evacuating hundreds of
civilians from Guantanamo Bay. In Norfolk, VA, he tried out for the USS
Liddle basketball team and never looked back. He was promoted to play on
the base amphibious team where he played many tournaments. He was picked up
to play on the All-Navy team. The 4th season, Larry was selected to play
for the All-Armed Forces Team as a forward where he broke the Armed Forces
scoring record by scoring 35 points a game. After the Navy, he went to
Florida State. He averaged 25 points and 13 rebounds per game on the
freshman team. He was freshman teammates with Dave Cowens, who went on to
be one of the 50 greatest NBA players of all time and a good friend. After
his freshman year, he was given a tryout with the Anaheim Amigos, of the
ABA and played with them for one season. He had tryouts with the LA Lakers,
Portland Trailblazers, and Boston Celtics before accepting a player coach
position with the New York Nationals of the Harlem Globe Trotters, where he
toured internationally for two seasons.
He met his wife, Suzanne
Skoglund, in Seattle, WA, in January 1969. They both resided in Los Angeles
and married July 12, 1969, in a church wedding in Las Vegas, NV. After his
basketball career, Larry took a job with Continental Airlines in LA where
he was stationed as an inflight supervisor, director of passenger service
and later as station manager at various cities across the country. He
retired from Continental in 1996. In 2005-0777 Larry worked a retirement
position at Legends on the campus of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN.
Larry
is survived by his loving wife, Suzanne, of Mountain Iron, MN, where they
lived the past 5 years to care for her family; sisters, Joyce (Neil)
Michael and Kathy Yates of South Bend, IN; cousins, nieces and nephews whom
he dearly loved. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Diane Lonstrom
and Marilyn (Joe) DeSimone, of Mishawaka, IN, Janet (Bob) Oler, Reseda, CA,
and his parents, Jane Yates, Ernest Moore, and stepfather, Rubert (Joe)
Yates. He was a beloved husband, son, brother, brother-in-law, cousin,
uncle and dear friend.
