Swimmer Rawls dead at age 64

WEST PALM BEACH - Katherine Rawls, known as the world's greatest women swimmer of her time, has died here of cancer at age 64.

Rawls died Thursday in a West Palm Beach hospital following an illness that lasted several years.

Rawls won 33 national swimming and diving titles in the 1930s, but never won an Olympic medal because World War II prevented the Games in 1940. The record stood until 19-year-old Tracy Caulkins broke it last year.
