Former FSU basketball player Michael Ojo dies of heart attack at
27. Curt Weiler, Tallahassee Democrat The Florida State men's basketball program lost one of its recent fan favorites Friday morning. Michael Ojo, a former center for the Seminoles from 2012 through 2017, passed away Friday morning at 27. Initial reports, according to Eurohoops.net, indicate he suffered a heart attack during a practice for Partizan, a professional basketball in Belgrade, Serbia. Ojo is most well remembered for his 7-foot-1, over 300-pound frame which stood out in a crowd and his size 21 shoes that had to be custom-made by Nike. A gentle giant But to those who had conversations with him, they were struck by his gentle giant nature, his strong sense of humor and how he embodied the FSU ideals. "In all of my years of coaching, I've never been around a person who captivated the emotions of everybody he came into contact with like Michael," FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton said in a statement released to the Democrat. "He had to be the most popular person in Tallahassee, and, certainly at Florida State University. Michael Ojo was a wonderful, wonderful human being. He was a great teammate and really represented what the Seminole spirit is all about. He was one of the purest Seminoles that I have ever been around; he will be missed tremendously by the whole Seminole nation." Ojo is one of Hamilton's more recent examples of discovering a player with minimal basketball background and turning him into quite the basketball player. He wasn't introduced to basketball until a few years before he enrolled at FSU. He was discovered while playing soccer in Lagos, Nigeria and after some introduction to basketball moved to the United States to play at Tennessee Temple Academy in Chattanooga. From there, Hamilton and his staff discovered Ojo, got him to come on an official visit and landed his commitment over Vanderbilt and Tennessee Chattanooga. It took some time, but Ojo grew into quite the basketball player during his time with the Seminoles. He went from averaging 0.7 points and 1.0 rebound per game as a true freshman in 2012-13 to 4.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game as a redshirt senior in 2016-17. That final season, he helped FSU reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in his career. The most notable storyline of his senior season came from the improbable strides he made at the free-throw line. Behind hours of work, he went from a 36.4% free-throw shooter as a freshman to a team-high 80.6% as a senior. As news of Ojo's passing spread, so did an outpouring of sadness from people across FSU Athletics. "This definitely a tough one man.. One of the best dudes I done came across," former FSU point guard Trent Forrest posted on Twitter. "Was the first to welcome me to FSU and was nothing short of a big brother my freshman year and even after.. it's crazy to think we was just talking about life last week.. Gone miss ya fasho O!!" John Lata, FSU's former director of the Student Services staff in athletics, posted on social media that "my heart is aching" upon hearing the news of Ojo's death. "One of my favorite student-athletes of all time passed away far too young," Lata posted on his Facebook page. "He always had a smile, was magnificent with kids and was always begging to do more community service, and the kids loved to see him. He always stopped by my office when he came back to Tally to check in on me. RIP Michael Ojo. Life is too short." After his FSU career, Ojo moved to Belgrade to pursue his professional basketball career. As a member of Crvena Zvezda, he won the ABA SuperCup in 2018 as well as the ABA League and the Serbian League in 2019. Sam Lunt, former FSU associate director of sports medicine for men's basketball, said his family is "crushed" by the news. "He was one of the best humans I know," Lunt said. "Great student, funny, just a genuinely good person. Ag (Lunt's wife) and I feel like we lost a kid and our kids lost a brother."
