Ex-county official found dead at home.

CLEARWATER - Former county commissioner G. Patrick "Pat" Iley, 53, of Clearwater died Sunday at his home, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Iley, a Republican, won the county commission District 1 seat in 1972 and served until 1976. He was the commissioner's chairman in 1975.

While on the commission, he established a reputation as a maverick for being on the losing end of 4-1 and 3-2 votes.

Iley was a friend of Dean Young, creator of the cartoon "Blondie" and in 1976 a likeness of Iley was featured in the comic strip.

Iley did not seek re-election when his commission term expired, instead choosing to return to his real estate business. He retired last year as the owner and operator of Pat Iley and Associates.

He moved to this area in 1945 from his native Pontiac, Mich. He was the 1967 president of the Clearwater-Largo-Dunedin Board of Realtors, the youngest person to hold that office.

He was a member of the Privateers of Clearwater, the Belleair Country Club, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He was a former member and officer of the Springtime City Kiwanis Club of Clearwater. He graduated from Clearwater High School in 1955 and was a 1959 graduate of Florida State University.

Before serving on the county commission, he served on Clearwater's planning and zoning board. He had been the chairman of the Pinellas County Housing Finance Authority since its inception eight years ago.

Iley is survivied by his wife, Jacqueline H.; a son, Timothy Patrick of Palm Beach Gardens; a daughter, Amy Jacqueline of Steamboat Springs, Colo; his father, Dan R., Sr., of Largo; a brother, Dan R. Jr., of Memphis, Tenn.; and a sister, Mary Jo Druding of Los Angeles.
