Published by Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, Ind.

Bill B. Stangland, 67, of Prescott Valley, Arizona, died Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona after an extended illness.

He was born June 22, 1940 in Wolf Lake, Indiana a son of Tallock A. and Mary Lois (Bryan) Stangland. Bill graduated from Wolf Lake High School where he excelled in basketball, baseball and track. He attended Western Michigan University, transferring to Florida State University on a baseball scholarship and graduating with a degree in accounting.

After completing his education, he continued to travel and live all over the world as Chief Executive Officer of many airlines. He was especially proud of his time with the Tigers Airlines and had the best stories to tell. He was also especially proud of his Norwegian heritage and traveled extensively throughout that country.

Bill loved to fish and watch all sports on television including Nascar where he cheered Dale Earnhardt Sr. and later Dale Earnhardt Jr. He had many passions in life, but none ever surpassed the love and pride he had for his daughter, Hayley. His love of flying was vicariously exhibited when he insisted she take flying lessons when she was 14.

Surviving relatives include his daughter, Hayley Joanne Stangland of Eugene, Oregon; two step children, Lisa Samsel and Dean Johnson, both of California; a step granddaughter, Mia; a sister, Johanna Petry of Walkerton; a brother, Tom Stangland of Santa Fe, New Mexico; and several nieces and nephews.
