Kingman Brittain Obituary Published in the Tallahassee Democrat, Sep. 29, 1955, page 9. Student Killed On Last Flight GREENVILLE, Miss. - Lt. Kingman Mercer Brittain Jr., 23, of Tallahassee was killed yesterday morning in an airplane crash near Greenville Air Force Base, Greenville, Miss. The son of Mrs. Laura H. Brittain, 717 N. Adams St., Lt. Brittain's death came on his last flight before he was to have received his Air Force wings in ceremonies today, friends said. His mother was visiting him and his wife at Greenvill at the time of the crash. Air Force officials said Lt. Brittain's plane crashed into Lake Bolivar about 14 miles from the Air Force Base. An instructor, Lt. John M. Hill Jr., was also killed. Born June 21, 1932, at Gainesville, Lt. Brittain had lived in Tallahassee most of his life. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. He was a graduate of Leon High School where he was a member of the track team, the Key CLub, the mixed chorus and manager for the football team. He was a Boys' State delegate from Leon in 1953 and was in the May Court in 1954. He attended the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn., his freshman year at college and graduated in 1954 from Florida State University, where he was vice-president of the Kappa Alpha Order. Following his graduation from FSU, he was married to the former Miss Fe' Pittman of Dania. He entered the Air FOrce a short time after his marriage and was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, Tex., before being stationed at Greenville, Miss. He received an Air FOrce commission from AFROTC at FSU. Survivors besides his mother anf wife include two
sisters, Mrs. James Townsend of Raleigh, N.C., and Mrs. Joe Hodges, who is
in Turkey stationed with her husband, Col. Joe Hodges of Apalachicola; his
father, K. M. Brittain of Tampa; a grandmother, Mrs. Laura Hawkins of
Jacksonville; three uncles and two aunts, Walter Hawkins of Jacksonville,
Sen, and Mrs. W. A. Shands of Gainesville, and Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Derringer
of Chestertown, Md. |
