A 19-year-old member of the Florida State University swim team drowned
Tuesday while on an outing with seven other FSU swimmers at Gopher Hole
Sink on State Road 369.
Kenneth Alan Eric Spence, a sophomore from Plano, Texas, drowned about 4:30
p.m. in an underground tunnel that linked one small sinkhole to another,
said Dick Simpson, a spokesman for the Leon County Sheriff's Department.
Simpson said Spence apparently had made the swim several times before his
fatal attempt.
Spence, a second-year freestlye swimmer, and other swim team members had
made previous visits to the sinkhole, located in Leon County about
one-fourth of a mile from the Wakulla County line.
