Obituary for William Lathan Osterhoudt, Sr. Published in keysnews.com, Key West, Fl on Sep 13, 2015. William Lathan “Billy” Osterhoudt Sr., at 81 years old and with family by his bedside, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on Aug. 13, 2015. He was born in Key West, Florida, on April 19, 1934, to the late Nicholas and Naomi Osterhoudt. He was a vibrant, adventurous man who brought energy and life to everything and everyone around him. His unselfish acts of generosity will never be forgotten. Billy was a 1952 graduate from Key West High School where he played football on the first modern day Conchs football team. As a wingback, he held one of the longest school records with an 87-yard run from scrimmage which stood for many decades. After high school, he went on to earn a degree in business administration and insurance from Florida State University. While at FSU, he met and married his life-long sweetheart, Nancy Jones, and returned to Key West to start a family. After several years with Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, he began teaching Special Education at May Sands School where he was known as “Mr. O” to all of his students. He truly loved to teach and his own children remember one of his favorite quotes that hung in his office, “If you give a man a fish, he can eat for a day. If you teach that man to fish he can eat for a lifetime”, that summed up his love and belief in educating others. He continued his own education during summer months and received his master’s degree in special education from Western Carolina University, where he returned each summer to teach. Throughout his long and distinguished educational career, he became a principal and served as the director of special education for the Monroe County School District. In the early 1960s he was elected as a Monroe County Commissioner, and was active in the Lion’s Club and the Masons. During those early days, he acquired his pilots’ license and loved to take his family and friends flying. He even flew his plane to spot fish for a local net fishing fleet of Key West. Fishing was another favorite activity and after years of being the “Weekend Warrior” fisherman, he opened Bill’s Key West Fish Market and Restaurant. Talking with students and staff daily at school and then greeting dinner patrons at night was his pleasure. Simply said, he just loved to talk with people. His ability to talk to anyone, friend or stranger, was magical. After 33 years with the school system and 10 years of the market and restaurant, he began his retirement. He and wife, Nancy, thoroughly enjoyed traveling the country in his Holiday Rambler R/V. With his personality and people skills, he quickly became the Region III Director for Holiday Rambler, who embraced his abilities to meet and greet. During his retirement, he built a home in Hickory, North Carolina, in order to have a home near his many family members who lived near there. His smile and laughter will surely be missed, but never forgotten by his family and friends. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was also blessed with many good friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Harry Osterhoudt. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Jones Osterhoudt, four daughters and two sons, Cynthia (Mark) Yambor of Connelly Springs, North Carolina, Catherine (Lawrence) Higgs of Taylorsville, North Carolina; Caroline (Gregory) Simpson of Newton, North Carolina; William “Bubba” (Tammy) Osterhoudt Jr. of Key West, Florida; Nicholas Osterhoudt, Cape Coral, Florida; Constance Cyr, of Fort Myers, Florida; 13 grandchildren, Shawn Yambor, Tanya Williams, Heather Bean, Lauren Moony, Lawrence Higgs Jr., Adam Simpson, Travis Simpson, Emily Simpson, Devin Osterhoudt, Carol Ann Osterhoudt, Nicholas Osterhoudt Jr., Jared Cyr and Brandon Cyr; great-grandchildren Maddi Miller, Peyton Yambor, Chase Yambor, Mackenzie Williams, Declan Yambor, Addison Rodgers, Kaleigh Hatton, Mallory Mooney, Ava Higgs, Erinn Cyr, Noah Simpson; sister Ruth Lowe, nephew Ben Lowe Jr. (Shelley), great-nephews Benny Lowe, Bobby Lowe and Frankie DuPonty, niece Joan Huck, great niece Lorie Rhoads, and great-nephew Brad Rhoads. |
