Obituary for Yvette McKinney
Published by the Paradise Memorial Funeral Home, Miami, Fl.

Yvette McKinney, was born in Manhattan, NY to the late Alfred McKinney and Katherine E. McKinney on March 3, 1951.

Yvette was a lifelong member of St. Agnes Episcopal Church. She attended Dunbar Elementary School, Booker T. Washington Middle School, Miami Jackson Senior High where she played the bells in the marching band and Florida State University. From the beginning, Yvette's love for sports was certain. From middle school to college, she played volleyball, softball, basketball, and badminton.

After college, Yvette started her 40-year career at Miami Palmetto Senior High school. Yvette was Palmetto's softball coach for nine years, with 218 wins and 47 losses with a state championship and state runner-up finish. She was also the volleyball coach for six years with 105 wins and 42 losses.

In 1989, Yvette became the First African American Female Athletic Director in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

In June 2011, after 36 years at Palmetto and 22 years as Athletic Director of Palmetto sports, Yvette was honored by the school and it was announced to her that as of the following year, the gym would be renamed "McKinney Court". The following year on May 9, 2012, in front of friends, family, colleagues, current and former students and one very special and important guest, her dad, Yvette's signature on the court and the new name was revealed during the court dedication ceremony. In 2012, the Village of Pinecrest honored her and named January 31st, Yvette McKinney Day.

Yvette has developed bonds and family ties to Palmetto and as a result of her direction and dedication, numerous student-athletes have developed their talents and abilities to play sports at the collegiate and professional levels.

Yvette was instrumental in the passing of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive Federal Financial Assistance. In addition to her career at Palmetto, Yvette was the first African American female to officiate NCAA women's basketball, and in 1997, she officiated the NCAA women's Final Four in Cincinnati, Ohio. Yvette was also an official of WNBA basketball during its inaugural season in 1997 and continued for 5 years thereafter. As an official, Yvette worked in the Big East, ACC, SEC and Big 12 conferences. She was an active member of the National Association of Women and Girls in Sports and served on the Board of Directors of Florida High Schools Athletic Association (FHSAA).

In 2003, Yvette received the Naismith Award, which recognizes individuals who display character, integrity, and dignity and have contributed mightily to the growth, success, and viability of college basketball.

In 2015, Yvette decided to hang up her sneakers (not really) and retire after 40 years of dedicated service to students and sports. On October 14, 2018, Yvette was inducted into the Miami-Palmetto Alumni Association's Hall of Fame.

Yvette was preceded in death by her mother Katherine E. McKinney, father Alfred; five uncles: James, Elijah, Kelson, Edward and Calvin; five aunts: Annie, Effie, Doris, Inez, and Ella Mae.

To cherish her memory, she leaves behind one sister Yvonne McKinney (Mark) Delvilla; two nieces, Tumai Altrina (Leon) Mainor, Marquise Yvette; one grand-niece Raymondi KYvonne; one great-grandnephew, Eason Lynx; two aunts, Pauline McKinney and Halise McKinney; three godsons: Kenneth Allen II, Ray Motley, and Robert Allen Jr.; a sister-friend Wanda McCoggle; a host of dedicated cousins, adopted children and friends.
