Derwyn Frank McElroy Obituary.
Published by The Montgomery Advertiser,
Montgomery, Ala., on May 23, 2021, page B4. Derwyn Frank McElroy, 86, of
Montgomery, Alabama, died peacefully at home on May 14, 2021, surrounded by
the family he loved dearly.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62
years, Clara Saunders McElroy; by hid three daughters and his son-in-law,
Barbara McElroy, Susan McElroy Tice, Karen McElroy Carroll, and William
Carroll; by two grandchildren, Saunders McElroy and Mary Agnes Tice; and by
his nieces, Joyce Patton and Lois Gallagher.
Derwyn worked his way
through Florida State University, where he and Clara met. He taught history
at Bay County High School in Panama City, Florida, before winning a
fellowship to Auburn University, where he received his doctorate in
education. He was a professor at Georgia State University and the
University of Georgia before retiring from Auburn University at
Montgomery.
He loved classical music, art, photography, good food and
wine, dry gin martinis, and travel through Europe, India, and the American
West. Derwyn had strongly-held opinions and would be happy to share them
with you, and always enjoyed being with friends and discussing his and
their interests.
Most of all, Derwyn loved his family. He used to say
that family wasn't everything, it was the only thing. He delighted in the
time we spent together, especially at birthdays and Christmas and during
weeks in the mountains or at the beach. There was no sacrifice he would not
make to meet every need, and almost every wish, of his children and
grandchildren. And oh, how he loved his wife. His loss is incalculable, and
we will hold him in our hearts forever.
