on Oct 29, 2024. Richard "Dickie" Theodore Mead, 97, passed away Sunday,
October 27, 2024.
Dickie, a proud 8th generation Pensacolian, was born
on September 1, 1927. He was the third of four children, and he completed
his high school education at Pensacola High School. In 1946, he enlisted in
the US Army Air Corps and received an honorable discharge in 1947.
Following his military service, he pursued higher education at the
University of Florida before becoming one of the pioneering male students
at Florida State University after its transition to a co-educational
institution. He lettered on the FSU golf team.
During his visits to
Pensacola, he met Lynette Marie Traxler, whom he married in November 1957
at St. Christopher's Church.
Lynn and Dick had two children, Richard
Britt Mead and Susan Mead Bonsignore. Dickie played a pivotal role in
establishing the Scenic Hills Country Club and even became its first club
champion in 1958. Throughout his professional life, he was involved in
various ventures, including Lamar Advertising and owning Mead Advertising,
selling insurance and real estate. In his later years, even at the age of
97, he remained active in keeping an eye out for real estate opportunities
and embodying his enduring mantra of maintaining a Positive Mental Attitude
(PMA).
He is preceded in death by his wife, Lynette Traxler Mead; his
parents, Agnes Theodora Hansen Mead and Charles Addison Mead II; as well as
his siblings, Charles Addison Mead III, June Elizabeth Braun, and Nancy
Caroline Hereford.
Survivors include son, Britt; daughter, Susan
(Bobby); grandchildren, Tina Hall (Kyle) and Nikki; as well as many nieces,
nephews and cousins.
