Lauderdale, Fla. on Aug. 8, 2005. Leonard, William (Bill) F., 78, of
Fort Lauderdale died Sunday, August 07, 2005 surrounded by his family. Mr.
Leonard has resided in Fort Lauderdale for the past 54 years, moving here
from Quincy, Florida. He has been married to Betty Claire Roberts of Fort
Lauderdale since 1949. Betty and Bill have three children, William R.
Leonard (Melanie Hays Leonard), Charles Glenn Leonard (Reta Brownlee
Leonard) and Betsy Leonard Booth (Rainey Cawthon Booth). He was also
blessed by the love of beautiful daughters-in-law, eleven grandchildren,
and one great-grandchild. While Mr. Leonard enjoyed giving back to the
community, the most important thing to him was his family. He had five
wonderful brothers, one loving sister, and sisters-in-law, and many nieces
and nephews. Mr. Leonard has been the senior partner in the Fort Lauderdale
firm of Leonard & Morrison since 1953. His professional affiliations
include The Florida Bar, The Broward Bar (of which he was President from
1974 to 1975) and the American Bar Association. He was a member of the
Florida Bar Board of Governors and has served on the Fourth District Court
of Appeals Judicial Nominating Commission. Mr. Leonard served on the
Florida Board of Regents from 1982 to 1987. He also served on the Florida
Council of 100, a gubernatorial advisory board made up of the state's top
business executives and community leaders. Mr. Leonard has served the
Broward community through a multitude of civic and professional
organizations, including the Board of the Holy Cross Hospital, Citizens and
Southern National Bank, the Southeast Bank of Broward County, Nova Law
School, the Broward Community College Foundation and as President of both
the Ft. Lauderdale Historical Society, and the One Hundred Club of Broward
County. An alumnus of Florida State University, Mr. Leonard received his
Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida College of Law. He is an
honorary member of the Florida Blue Key and was honored by the University
of Florida with a Distinguished Alumnus award, as well as by the Broward
County Gator Club. In service to the United States, Mr. Leonard served
nearly five years in the military. He served as an army sergeant in the
South Pacific during World War II. Later, after graduating as a University
of Florida Distinguished Military Graduate, he was called back to serve as
a first lieutenant in the Army during the Korean War.
