Robert Tinney-Lee Obituary Published by Tallahassee Democrat on Jan. 31, 2003. STEINHATCHEE, Fla. - Robert "Sonny" Tinney-Lee, 73, a retired builder and land developer, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003. A native of Avon Park, Fla., and raised in Tallahassee, he graduated from Leon High School in 1948 and Florida State University in 1953. An expert swimmer, he appeared in many Tarzan and Esther Williams movies. While working in an Esther Williams movie in Weekiwachee Springs, he met the mother of his children, Nancy Fisher. He entered the construction industry and was one of the first builders in Cocoa, Fla., creating homes for the space industry employees. He developed on Cocoa Beach in Rockledge and created Rockledge Country Club. He moved to Ocala and developed the College Park subdivision and assisted in the development of Golden Hills Country Club Estates with his late wife Dorothy Goebel Lee, whom he lovingly cared for during her recent illness and passing. He then moved into his lovely Steinhatchee home directly on the river. He was a champion golfer, winning the intercollegiate championship while at FSU, and won many local championships, including the Golden Hills tournament at age 70 (He laughed at the one saying he beat the young "limber backs.") He beat the Bobby Jones record at Highlands, N.C., club by shooting a 65. Sonny loved bird hunting. He owned several airplanes, moving up from a Luscombe to a twin Cessna. He won skeet shooting tournaments and was an avid fisherman. He was a congenial host and will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by a son, Robert Lee Jr. of Silver Springs, Fla.; a daughter, Alice Tinney of Elkin, N.C.; two brothers, Tommon Tinney and Jonathan Livingston; and several grandchildren. |
