Houston "Housecat" Taff, devoted husband, loving father; brother, loyal
friend, and avid outdoorsman rose with the rising tide August 30, 2008,
after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife of 40
years, Beth Harvey Taff. He is survived by his daughters, Christy Taff Amy
Sherman (and husband Travis), Windy Jones and husband Merwyn); one godson,
Tony Yoemans; three granddaughters, Raegan and Abbigail Sherman and Kolbie
Jones; one grandson, Jaxon Taff; one sister, Oleta Taff Lawhon; and one
brother, Clayton Taff; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and many close
friends. Houston was born March 1, 1943, at Johnson's Hospital in
Tallahassee, Fla., to fourth generation Wakullians, the late Commodore and
Winnifred Taff. He graduated from Crawfordville High School, received an AA
Degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, and completed his B.S.
Degree in Business at Florida State University where he played baseball.
Houston was a leader in the Apalachicola Valley Conference and a founding
member of the Wakulla Men's Club. He was the first Varsity Baseball coach
at Wakulla High School and instrumental in the development of women's
sports with the Wakulla County Recreation Department, as well as with the
Wakulla County Schools. In honor of his dedication to athletics, the
Wakulla County School Board recently named the Varsity Baseball Field
"Houston Taff Field". The Wakulla Seminole Boosters are In the process of
endowing an athletic scholarship in his name at Florida State University.
He was employed by the State of Florida as a Nuisance Alligator Trapper for
over 35 years. Houston was the presiding President of the Florida
Alligator Trappers Association; a position he held for over 15 years.
