Young Man Dies Of Gunshot Wounds.

Twenty-two-year-old Calvin Patterson who was one of the first black athletes to be granted a football scholarship at Florida State University died enroute to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital yesterday, an apparent suicide victim.

According to police reports, Patterson of 2209 Amelia Circle called a telephone operator around 1 p.m. and told her to call the police because he'd been shot.

Officers called an ambulance but said Patterson was dead on arrival at TMH from a .38 caliber bullet wound in his lower abdomen.

Patterson enrolled at FSU in June 1968 but had trouble keeping his grades high enough to become eligible for the football team.

Police said the sophomore Patterson was taking courses this summer at Tallahassee Community College.

Patterson's roommate, Dr. David Ammerman, a FSU history professor, told officers that Patterson had been upset lately due to his bad grades.
