dies at 61. John David "Bud" Williamson, a popular lobbyist and avid outdoorsman, died at his home early Saturday of a heart attack. He was 61. Tallahassee attorney Duby Ausley, who had been quail-hunting last weekend with Williamson, called his friend's unexpected death "a great loss." "Bud was one of the smartest people I ever knew, and he was one of those people who never sought or desired public recognition," Ausley said. "He was an effective lobbyist, thoroughly honest and straight-forward." "Bud made everybody's day a better one by being there," attorney Murray Wadsworth said. Born on Dec. 6, 1935, Williamson graduated in 1954 from Leon High School, where he was co-captain of the 1953 North East Conference championship football team and was consensus All-America quarterback. He also lettered in basketball, baseball and track and attended Florida State University on a combined baseball-basketball scholarship. His father, the late Ed Williamson, was FSU's first football coach. After earning his bachelor's degree from FSU in 1958, the younger Williamson was a high school coach in Fort Lauderdale. He returned to Tallahassee and worked for then Secretary of State Tom Adams before becoming vice president for government relations for the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce. At the time of his death, Williamson was resident vice president of CSX Transportation Co,. where he had been in charge of legislative affairs for almost 25 years. He was a member of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church and the Tallahassee Exchange Club. He was a director of the Florida Chamber of Commerce. He is
survived by his wife of 39 years, Anne Munroe Williamson, three children,
Beth Williamson Dyal, John David Williamson Jr. and Anne Marie Williamson,
all of Tallahassee; three grandchildren, Stephen Dyal, Ramsey Dyal and John
D. Williamson III, all of Tallahassee; and his mother-in-law Alma Munroe of
Tallahassee. |
