Michael Edward Page Obituary. Published in the Tallahassee Democrat on Feb 2, 1969, page 1. Mike Page, Wife Killed in Wreck; Ratliff Is
Critical. Mike Page, a starting defensive back on Florida State's football team, and his wife Susan were killed Friday night in a train-car accident in Valdosta, Ga. Floyd Ratliff, a starting defensive end for the Seminoles who was the driver of the car, was listed in critical condition late last night in a Jacksonville hospital with head and kidney injuries. He has not regained consciousness since the accident. An ambulance had rushed Ratliff to Jacksonville's St. Vincent Hospital for the attentions of a neuro-surgeon. Page and his wife were accompanying Ratliff in his '64 Pontiac, to Ratliff's home in Jesup, Ga. to spend the weekend. Valdosta has had a rash of train-car accidents lately, according to Martin Miller, city editor of the Valdosta Times, but none at this particular crossing. The crossing, however, is considered one of the city's most dangerous. Located on Highway 84, the West Hill Ave. crossing has no drop arms. Neither does it have a flashing light to signal an approaching train. Moreover, vision on the right - from whence the northbound train came - is blocked by a warehouse. A black-and-white sign that reads, according to Miller, simply "Stop - Unsafe Railroad Crossing," is on the right by the warehouse. Coming in via way of Quitman on the east, the players and Mrs. Page were headed toward Waycross. The crossing is just at the entrance to Valdosta, not far inside the city limits. Normally, a northbound train, leaving the station to the south, would be picking up speed at the crossing, a Valdosta police officer said. The train engineer told officers that he blew his horn as he approached the crossing and that, when he saw the car, he braked quickly. The engineer, W.A. Turner of Macon, Ga. said he was going 14 miles per hour when the train collided with the car. The nose of the car was hit on the right side by the freight train's engine. Page was sitting on the right. Officers said he died instantly. "He actually didn't know what hit him," said Lt. Raymond Flowers, the investigating officer. "He was already dead." Mrs. Page died "two or three hours later" in a Valdosta hospital, according to the police. "He apparently didn't see the train," Flowers said of Ratliff. There were no skid marks. Page and Ratliff, both juniors, were starters in FSU's Peach Bowl game with Louisiana State, and both were expected to be starters next season. A Winter Haven native, Page was 21, same age as his wife Susan, who was a Tampa girl. Ratliff is 20. FSU Coach Bill Peterson learned the shocking news at the Atlanta airport Saturday morning while en route home from a speaking engagement at Greenwood, S.C. Someone tapped him on the shoulder and inquired if he were Coach Peterson. It was Page's older brother Tommy, who had heard the news on television and was at the airport to fly to Winter Haven. "This is such a tragic thing," said Peterson. "I
saw those boys' pictures on television tonight (Saturday) and it just tore
me up. Mike was such a great competitor, a real winner and team leader. He
had a wonderful sense of humor, always talked about what a triple-threat he
was and how he ought to be playing offense, too, in Ron Sellers' place at
flanker. Floyd is the same kind of fine boy ... great boys." |
