Miller. Fred Miller, one of the more colorful former athletes in Florida State history, is dead at 38. Widely known as "Fred the Head," Miller died Wednesday morning after being hospitalized Tuesday following what was described as a pulmonary embolism. "We were shocked when we got the news," commented FSU football coach Bobby Bowden. "I'll always remember him as one of the most spirited players and alumni. Fred was Mr. Spirit. "He was a daring, courageous, out-of-control kind of football player. Fred was a very happy person to be around. We'll miss him." A widely heralded fullback out of Jacksonville's Paxon High, both big and fast but born legally blind in one eye, Miller came to Florida State in 1972. Miller was obliged to give up football following a concussion in spring practice prior to what would have been his senior season in 1976, Bowden's first year as Florida State coach. He had been a starter near the end of his freshman season. Miller had a run of injuries - including a broken arm that grew back crooked - that seemed to blunt his high promise as a player. "I remember his running against the varsity in one of his first practices as a freshman," said former teammate Phil Arnold. "He was about 240, and nobody could tackle him." Named FSU Homecoming Chief in 1976 as well as the Most Outstanding Campus Leader, Miller turned to cheerleading when he was told he should play no more. He remained a cheerleader from the stands and at pep rallies as he remained in Tallahassee following graduation. He shaved his blond hair, painted his bald head and soon after earned identity as "Fred the Head." But his unusual athletic ability surfaced anew as a softball player. A home run-hitting outfielder-third baseman, he earned some national acclaim. In a short-lived national professional league, playing for Cleveland, he was once that league's most valuable player in its all-star game. Andy Miller, a long-time friend and the president of Seminole Boosters Inc., said Fred had to eventually give up softball because of a hereditary blood-clotting problem of the sort that precipitated his fatal embolism. "The unique thing about Fred, he was never bitter about anything," said Miller. "He was simply a great person, a really good person. "He was never self-conscious. To him, showing his total allegiance to Florida State was most important." Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Bevis Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 at First Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to The Seminole Boosters' Fred Miller Scholarship Fund.
