Body found in gulf identified; case handed over to FBI. By Kelly Ryan Published in www.tampabay.com on May 15, 1997 Authorities have identified the man whose body was pulled from the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday as Roger Brownlee, a Tampa man reported missing nearly two weeks ago. An autopsy has not been completed, so it is still unclear how Brownlee died. This week, the investigation into his death was turned over to the FBI. "Certainly, the cause and the circumstances of his death are the big questions," said FBI spokesman Brian Kensel. Brownlee, 35, was last seen leaving his condominium, 2525 Tampa Bay Blvd., about 1 p.m. May 1. He had plans to meet a friend that night, his family said. His 20-foot pleasure boat was found the next day with the keys in the ignition and about a quarter-tank of gas. His wallet, T-shirt and shoes were in the boat. On May 2 and May 3, the U.S. Coast Guard used helicopters and boats to search for Brownlee, from the mouth of Tampa Bay toward Hernando County. Without knowing where to concentrate efforts, the search was suspended. Three fishermen found the body Saturday afternoon about 12 miles off Clearwater. The body was taken to the Medical Examiner's office, where officials determined it was Brownlee. This week, the investigation was turned over to the FBI because Brownlee was found in international waters. FBI agents will work with officials from several other agencies who had handled the case, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Hernando Sheriff's Office, Tampa police and Pinellas Sheriff's Office. Authorities are considering all possibilities in Brownlee's death, including accident, suicide and homicide. Brownlee's family, meanwhile, is grappling with the death of the vibrant, athletic man who loved fishing, traveling and his job as a national sales manager for Zytech Plastics of Tacoma, Wash. They are also angry that they often have been the last to find out how the investigation was progressing. Since Brownlee was reported missing, various officials have released details about the case to people outside the family, said Brownlee's older sister, Patricia Brownlee Hobart of Brooksville. For example, the family didn't know a body had been discovered last weekend until they read about it in Sunday's newspaper. "It floors me the information people have called us to tell us they got over the phone," she said. "What I'm concerned about is all the evidence that has been leaked out and can't be recovered. I really hope the FBI finds something." Hobart said her gut feeling has told her foul play might be involved. So, she also is concerned that important evidence might be lost because authorities have taken so long to study Brownlee's boat and condo for clues to his disappearance. When Brownlee fished, he never went farther than the Sunshine Skyway, Hobart said. He was happy, athletic and an experienced boater - not someone with problems or with enemies.
