John Calvin (Coach) Levings has died on November 12, 2011 in Harlingen,
Texas. He was born in Superior, Wisconsin on August 12, 1941 and was 70
years old at the time of his passing. He was preceded in death by his
mother Dorothy Smith Levings, and father Donald James Levings, Sr. He is
survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Christine Kay Sheehe Levings,
daughter Sarah Elizabeth Levings, son, Stephen Michael Levings, daughter in
law, Erika Levings, and grandchildren Aidee, Hector, Ian, Angel, Abigail
Grace, and Natalia Christine; sisters Margaret Christensen (Carl) of Laguna
Vista, TX, Marilyn Rangel (Lionel) of Weslaco, TX, Marcia Levings, and
Maria Levings of Arlington, TX; brothers Donald James Levings, Jr.
(Cecelia) of Bedford, TX, Bob Levings (Christine) of Deland, FL, and Chuck
Levings (Vicki) of North Richland Hills, TX, sisters-in- law, Colleen
Pakenham of Pueblo, CO, Kathy Ostrom (Bob) of Corpus Christi, TX, and
Janine Hobbs (Tom) of Mt. Dora, FL, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was
surrounded in love and blessings with his family at the time of his death.
He was first and foremost, a teacher, with a passion for lifelong learning.
He was a man of faith with an unwavering devotion to God. It was through
his faith, that he was able to touch so many lives with his quiet
brilliance. He loved football. He taught life lessons to all the young men
he coached through his love of football. He taught social studies, because
he had such a passion for the world around him. He was admired for his
dedication and work ethic. He graduated from Polytechnic High School in
Fort Worth, Texas. He went to Florida State University in 1959, where he
played football as a guard. He earned a Bachelor's degree in education and
a Masters degree in administration. He served his country in the United
States Army as a First Lieutenant. He was at the artillery school at Fort
Bliss in El Paso, Texas during the Vietnam War. He taught and coached in
Florida, Colorado and Texas. He dedicated his life to teaching and
coaching. He started his career in Florida and met his wife in Colorado,
when he was at the Holy Cross Abbey. They married June 2, 1972. He moved
his young family to South Texas in 1979. He taught and coached football in
Brownsville, Texas at Gladys Porter High School until 1985, and Homer Hanna
High School until 1991. He taught at Weslaco High School, Corpus Christi
Carroll High School, Raymondville High School, and then retired from
teaching and coaching at Weslaco High School in May of 2003. In total, he
dedicated 41 years to his love of education. He was a lifelong Catholic and
a member of St. Anthony's Parish in Harlingen, Texas. He loved to read. He
loved to play golf. He loved to be outdoors, mostly the Rocky Mountains. He
loved to travel. Most of all he loved his family. He will be dearly missed
by all who were blessed to have been touched by his living on this earth.
