George Julius Perles Obituary. Published by findagrave.com. College
Football Coach. For twelve seasons (1983 to 1994), he served as head coach
of the Michigan State Spartans and will be remembered for guiding them to a
Rose Bowl win (1987 season). He attended Western High School in Detroit and
following graduation, he served with the United States Army. After his
discharge, he enrolled at Michigan State University where he played
collegiate football. He remained at the school following graduation and
began his lengthy coaching career as a defensive line coach. He reached the
professional ranks in 1972 when he became the defensive line coach with the
Pittsburgh Steelers under coach Chuck Noll. During his tenure, the Steelers
captured four Super Bowl titles. He was to serve as head coach of the
Philadelphia Stars of the newly-formed United States Football League and
prior to the start of the season (1982), he played a key role in player
signings. However, he would accept a position as head coach at Michigan
State University before their inaugural season began. Jim Mora would be his
replacement and went on to have a lengthy career in both the USFL and NFL.
In addition to a Rose Bowl title, he guided the Spartans to a Aloha Bowl
and Sun Bowl win. Hall of Fame college football coach Nick Saban served as
an assistant under Perles and succeeded him as head coach of Michigan State
in 1995. |
