James Johnson "Jim" Olsen Obituary Published in St. Augustine Record from Oct. 1 to Oct. 4, 2017 James "Jim" Johnson Olsen, 84, of St. Augustine, passed away peacefully Sept. 24, 2017, at the Bailey Family Center for Caring. He was born Jan. 21, 1933, in Pensacola, to John and Gladys Hancock Olsen. He served in the Florida Army National Guard for 36 years and retired as a Colonel. He was a member of Ancient City Baptist Church. Jim graduated from Florida State University in 1956. During his time at FSU he was a member of the football team and played alongside Burt Reynolds and Lee Corso. After several years in the public school system as a teacher and a football coach in Tampa, he and his family relocated to Tallahassee in 1971 where he was hired as the first Director of The National Seminole Club, which later became known as Seminole Boosters, Inc. In 1975, Jim went on active duty where he transitioned to full-time military status and was assigned to the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) at Fort Monroe, Virginia. After a four-year post, he moved to St. Augustine and served as the Assistant State Quartermaster before being promoted and finishing his career as the Director of Plans, Operations and Training FLARNG. Preceded in death by his mother, father and brother, Tom Massey, he is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol Olsen; daughter, Jesseca Olsen, Tampa; son, James J. Olsen, Jr. (Laura), Tallahassee; grandchildren, Diana Olsen and Margaret "Maggie" Olsen, Tallahassee; and sister, Sally Knowles, Jacksonville.
