FSU Student Is Drowned In Bridge Fall

Kent Stills, a 21-year-ols Florida State University student, drowned last night when he fell into the bay while fishing from the Ochlockonee River bridge at Panacea.

Still was married and has a 16-month-old child. His body has not been recovered.

The FSU student fell into the water while trying to jump over the bridge railing into a fishing catwalk, just below the railing. But Stille misjudged his position and leaped over the rail at a point where there is no fishing catwalk.

Three FSU companions - Herbert LaMee, Billy Cabanas and Bob Holleman - dove quickly into the water and tried to help Stille but they said they never saw him again.

Stille, a junior majoring in accounting, was a reserve on the FSU baseball team. He lived in Alumni Village and his parents live in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Capt. W.S. Schley, head of the Big Bend Coast Guard Auxiliary, said the three fishing companions told him that Stille came to the surface after falling in but didn't say a word. Then the trio jumped in but couldn't find him.

Assisting in the search for his body are the sheriff's offices of Franklin and Wakulla counties and the State Board of Conservation.
