passed away on August 15, 2021, at the age of 74, in his hometown of
Tallahassee, FL. Lane graduated from Leon High School in 1964 where he was
Senior Class President, played baseball and was captain of the basketball
team. He graduated from Florida State University in 1968 with a B.S. in
Physical Education where he was the outstanding male senior in PE. During
his time at FSU, he was a Distinguished Military Graduate of Army ROTC and
played baseball for the Seminoles. In 1970, he obtained an M.S. in Physical
Education and Education Administration. Following college, Lane served in
the United States Army stationed at the United States Military Academy
(West Point) from 1970-1972. He was commissioned as Special Services
Officer (First Lieutenant) and served as assistant baseball coach. After
his military service, he began his career at Grady County Schools as a
teacher, administrator, and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction from
1972-1980. While at Grady County Schools, Lane obtained an Ed.S in
Administration and Supervision from Valdosta State College. In 1980, Lane
accepted the position of Executive Director of the Tallahassee Junior
Museum. During this time, new habitats were opened, including red wolves,
Florida panther, river otter, bobcat and guest animals. He loved making
cane syrup for Fall Farm Day and continued to grow sugar cane for this
event on his family land. In 1990, he accepted a position as the Director
of the newly formed Red Hills Conservation Association at Tall Timbers From
1991-2012, Lane was the Executive Director of Tall Timbers. He was a vocal
advocate for prescribed fire in the Southeast and helped preserve over
100,000 acres of private land in the Red Hills Region through conservation
easements. A lifelong athlete, Lane played softball, flag football,
basketball and in his 40's moved to adult baseball. He was instrumental in
starting the adult baseball leagues in Tallahassee. He and the Tallahassee
Classics played annually in the Roy Hobbs Baseball Association World Series
from his 40's into his 70's. He was involved in many civic activities
including Leadership Tallahassee, Leadership Florida, Alzheimer's Resource
Center, Tallahassee Parks and Recreation, Leon Alumni Baseball, North
Florida Prescribed Fire Council and Georgia Prescribed Fire Council. In
retirement, Lane continued to be a steward of his family's land and enjoyed
hunting, playing baseball, working with his Brittanys and sharing the joy
of the outdoors with his granddaughters. He also served as the Internship
Coordinator for the Land, Forest,Wildlife Management degree program at
Southern Regional Technical College in Thomasville from 2012 to his death.
Lane was especially proud when his family's land was put under conservation
easement to protect it in perpetuity. Lane is survived by his wife, Susan;
daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Rick Holmes; son and daughter-in-law,
Jeremy Lane and Kathryn Green; grandchildren, Jakub Holmes, Anna Bella
Holmes and Jinnette Lane Green; and brother and sister-in-law, John and Joy
Green.
