William Anthony Westendick Obituary. Published in the Tallahassee Democrat on Jan 12, 2007, page 15. Lt. Col. William Anthony Westendick, 69, retired U.S. Army, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007. Bill leaves behind his wife, Jill, of 31 years. Bill attended grammar school in Tallahassee through the eighth grade and then transferred to Cincinnati, Ohio to St. Francis seminary. He later graduated from Florida State University with a double major in languages. Known as Little Billy Westendick, Bill's first love was baseball, beginning with Little League then the American Legion and playing four years at FSU as an All Star catcher. Bill had numerous offers from major-league teams; however, injuries ended his baseball career. Bill spent 29 years in the armed forces. He began as a Marine Boot (private) and was promoted to officer before transferring to the army and retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1989. While in the service, Bill traveled the world including Thailand (one year), Saigon (one and half years) and Germany (three years). He was also stationed throughout the United States. Bill was versed in many languages, including Greek, Latin, German, Spanish, Russian, Thai, Vietnamese and English. He also received two masters degrees in business and finance/education. He is also survived by his children, Robert of San Francisco, Brian of Hendersonville, N.C., Billy (and wife Holley) of Barwick, Ga., and David (and wife Cynthia) of Atlanta; six grandchildren; and six brothers and sisters: Helen, Mary, Robert, Joe, Katherine, and David, and their families. Bill has hit his grand-slam home run and entered into heaven to join his parents, Frank and Alyce, and his brothers, Frank and Father Basil OFM. "Once a Marine, always a Marine." |
